Dry Your Tears and Walk Outside, It's the 4th of July: 7/4 Game Preview and Thread, Jays at Yankees

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees, Jul 4, 2009 1:05 PM EDT

Happy Independence Day to all you Yanks out there.

The Jays look to get on track after dropping the first game of this four game series this afternoon.  The offense has really been sputtering, with another rough day yesterday in which Vernon Wells provided 6 of 13 of the Jays' total bases from his new home in the 6th hole.

Roy Halladay pitches for the Jays and hopes to get better run support than last time, while Chien-Ming Wang pitches for the Yankees.  Wang still has a 2-digit ERA but has looked better recently.

Also, the Yankees are commemorating the 70th anniversary of Lou Gerhig's famous speech today. The Iron Horse is by far the greatest Yankee to come from the Big Apple, so I'm always a little surprised he's not better regarded by Yankee fans.

Anyway, let's go Jays, and thanks to the great band X for today's title.

Wang hasn't been all that bad lately

and the Jays offense hasn’t been all that good, so it’s not a foregone conclusion that they will score a lot. It is a good chance to get the O back on track though, I agree.

Positive thinking, I'm trying my best to do this

Otherwise I get too frustrated watching the Jays get blanked by crappy pitchers that have career games against them.

Helped my fantasy team, but I'd rather see Damon go 0 for 4 today and the Jays win

Than see my fantasy team move up because of the Yankees beating Doc.

I always think it is pretty weird that

“My Country Tis of Thee” is based on the same tune as “God Save the Queen”

it seems a little inappropriate

by aagoodfella on Jul 4, 2009 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the tune for God Save the Queen

is based on a welch drinking song ? Wales is part of UK (by choice or otherwise) so that is probably not that big an issue?

which came first, God Save the Queen or My Country Tis of Thee? if the latter is later, I would say it is inappropriate … it would be like UK penning a song My Kingdom Tis of Thee based on the Star Spangled Banner …. just not appropriate IMHO
