Yankees 8, Jays 4
Tough one last night for our heroes.
On the Mound: Marc Rzepczynski pitched great until the 7th inning, when he ran into some trouble and was lifted. Things really unraveled, and Zep ended up with 4 runs allowed over his 6 innings, though he did strike out 7 and walk just one. He wasn't the problem.
At the Plate: Vernon Wells and Alex Rios had RBI singles in the 1st inning. Adam Lind and Marco Scutaro added solo home runs. We had our baserunners, but didn't cash them.
From the Pen: Bad showing from our relief corps last night. Josh Roenicke entered in relief of Zep in the 7th and gave up 3 walks and 2 hits. Jesse Carlson gave up another run in the 8th and Brian Tallet surrendered a Damon home run in the 9th. Yuck.
Cold Comfort from the Farm: Travis Snider had a double. J.P. Arencibia hit a home run, his 12th of the season. Casey Janssen pitched a perfect inning, striking out 1. Though David Purcey got absolutely shellacked.
Lind was the only one with JoTD numbers. The Jays are off today before taking on Baltimore this weekend.

Can’t find anything about it.

'Oh, you can't help that' said the Cat 'we're all mad here'.
yes
I cannot find anything either. I thought I heard them mention it on a sports broadcast last night, but perhaps not.
i did notice that
It seems like Ryan asked for his release because he felt his velocity will never return to major league form….sounds like the guy is really down on himself =(

Being realistic, I think the Cubbies were rushing him to get him back to the majors. So they had another leftie option in the pen, however Ryan knows that if he got back to the bigs and pitched like a little leaguer again then it was going to be hard to get any sort of contract going forward.

Is it safe to say that...
R-Zep has surpassed guys like Purcey and Janssen on the depth chart for next season?

Janssen is being brought back up as a reliever. I think his days as a starter are over so yes on that front.
And as much as I like Purcey, I think the organization has soured on him and would have to agree Zep has passed him

Yeah, I’ve got Janssen penciled into the pen next season.

That leaves out Richmond. He could be the long-man. And this is assuming Dustin “Carlo Colaiacovo” McGowan doesn’t come back.
And what about Litsch?
We still have guys like Robert Ray, and Brad Mills. Although Mills was scary awful while he was up…

We'll I'm sure we'd rather have competition for the spots
If we didn’t, then we’d be in trouble. Plus we know if someone gets injured, we have more arms to throw in the mix.
Litsch won’t be back until at least the All-Star break next year and will have to compete for a spot at that time, possibly if we are hit with injuries again.
It’s so hard to gauge on McGowan especially since he hasn’t done any actual pitching rehab….. but at this point it isn’t looking good.
Ray, Mills, and Purcey will start the year in AAA and will be the injury replacements. Litsch will be hard pressed to crack the rotation unless someone is hurt mid year.
I think you are right about Richmond being the longman.

Why with a rested pen and no game the next day do we
Use our worst relivers
Push our starter to the 7th when he had never pitched there before.
So he never made it to the 7th? Big Deal. His pitch count was still low enough. I do not fault Cito for running Zep out there in the 7th.

no I think Cito did a very good jog wrt to Zep …. Cito moved very quickly and yanked him in the 7th, i thought that was great
but to me, it was obvious from the get-go that Roenicke had a rubber arm last night and he should have been yanked right away … that I think was a huuuuuuuuuuuuge mistake
But always having two guys warm up in case the first guy sucks
seems like a good way to burn out young relievers. Plus, what if the second guy isn’t good either?
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
Actually come to think of it, you are right. There wasn’t anyone else warming up at the time, The camera panned to the pen and I think Carlson was stretching but that was it.
They didn’t have anyone warm to go into the game for Roenicke.

Roenicke's tRA+ with CInci was 124
It’s not League’s 130, but calling him our worst reliever is a stretch.
