The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get: 9/26 Game Thread, Mariners at Jays

Seattle Mariners at Toronto Blue Jays, Sep 26, 2009 1:07 PM EDT

Yesterday's game was unbelievable.

Today -- Purcey v. Ian Snell.  I'll be flipping back and forth between this game and the 2nd half of Fulham and Arsenal.  What can I stay, London derby.  Who knows, maybe the lineups will even be working by the time the game starts.

No Millar!

that's on a channel I don't get here....

and my wife is complaining enough about how much the cable costs…

by Tom Dakers on Sep 26, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

it's on Fox Soccer Channel in the states

which used to cost extra but our cable company added it to our basic package, much to my delight

they scored 3 goals within 4 minutes

they have hardly any players though

I can't really complain...there is lots of english league games on the channels I get...

and I get a channel that has a lot of italian league stuff. But there is a full time soccer/rugby channel that I wouldn’t mind

an Irish channel - I think they went bankrupt

for some reason I don’t understand they are still on in North America, though

I loved getting the free preview of that for a few weeks last year...

Watched a ton of rugby, aussie rules and gaelic football. Meh to soccer…

Randy Ruiz

I just don’t understand it. Is Bautista even in the team’s plans next year? And how hard would
it be for Ruiz to learn playing at 1B? He’s done it before. I guarantee at least 20 HR/80 RBI
next season if he plays every day at 1B. I would have kicked Overbay to the curb a long time
ago. Cito is just a stubborn old man, and it’s incredibly frustrating to see how the season is
ending. I am this*close to going postal over Ruiz not playing.

by FD98 on Sep 26, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd like to see more Ruiz too

but it’s hardly worth going crazy over. And Ruiz is cheaper, but it’s extremely unlikely he’d be a better all-around player than Overbay over a full season

Wasted opportunity

What’s driving me crazy is that we may never find out what Ruiz can do. This would
have been the ideal time to find out if he can play every day. We know what Bautista
can do, but what about Ruiz? I better take some deep breaths because I am close to
popping a vein …

by FD98 on Sep 26, 2009 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

yes, I think so

though I can’t imagine he wouldn’t hit better than Overbay against lefties

by hugo on Sep 26, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm pretty he's equally good on both sides, at least in AAA he was

He’d have a minor role, but we won’t know if he’ll be able to take on that role, cause he’s not being tried at 1B.

He won’t be a full time DH (or we’re in trouble) and Overbay shouldn’t see lefties, so there’s a need over there… And he’s not a prospect anymore, so it’s not as if he needs lots of AB’s (i.e. in the minors) to help him “progress”.

by REMO on Sep 26, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Ruiz/Overbay platoon next season

If the JP/Cito circus act is around, they will probably release Ruiz in the
off-season, and re-sign Millar with a pay raise. Personally, I would try to
trade Overbay and Millar ideally should retire.

by FD98 on Sep 26, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Overbay might not be back, it's true

I don’t think he’s been happy about platooning, but he has been absolutely brutal against lefties for 2 seasons now

Overbay unhappy?

I hope this is a joke because I just turned a darker red. What did we
get for our $24 million? And he’s unhappy?!? I better take a walk
outside …

by FD98 on Sep 26, 2009 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I am a die hard fan

And I take losing personally … more than JP and Cito
apparently.

by FD98 on Sep 26, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

if you take losing more personally than the guys involved...might be time to pull back a bit.....

Ruiz isn’t good enough to worry all that much about. Overbay is a better player than he is.

by Tom Dakers on Sep 26, 2009 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

though if you are optimistic enough about Ruiz

you could argue the Jays should try to trade Overbay (assuming they can find a buyer), insert Ruiz, and free up money elsewhere — even if Overbay is better than Ruiz, you might be able to improve the team with the extra money (and whatever you get in return) enough to outweigh it.

since the Jays traded for Overbay

they have paid him $18.7 million and gotten $25.5 million in value from him

Overbay value

Hugo, can you please direct me to the formula? I have seen
references in other posts but never seen the actual crunching.
Thanks.

by FD98 on Sep 26, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

sure

www.fangraphs.com

The value is based on WAR, wins above a replacement player. Actually, it may underestimate Overbay’s value since he is very good at digging out bad throws and that’s not taken into account in the defensive formula (UZR) that’s used.

MVP - Lind

If we had been in the wild card chase (which we should have been this season), both
Lind and Hill would have been mentioned as MVP candidates.

Anyways, I will take the W. Let’s get ’em tomorrow.
