As We Walk to Fenway Park in Boston Town: 9/28 Game Thread, Jays at Red Sox
Toronto Blue Jays at Boston Red Sox, Sep 28, 2009 7:10 PM EDT
Hi everyone. Hope things are going well. The Jays, having concluded the Canadian portion of our programme, will finish the year on the road. Scott Richmond and Michael Bowden will face off, Bowden making his first start of the year.
Today's title comes from a Jonathan Richman song and a great one. Almost makes me not hate the Red Sox. Almost.

HAH
More back spasms for Beckett.
Wouldn’t that be a shame if Boston didn’t have their number 1 for the playoffs… ahhh
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
Now I do like the sound of my own voice, but is there anyone else here?
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
Mine are being delightful screaming children.
AND! Over the weekend one of them somehow managed to delete my MLB 09 road to the show profile…… I was playing that character for over 4 friggin months.
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
hmmm get used to it....
I played half life for months…..got near the end and then a child got to it……haven’t played a game like that since
I was so irked…. By randomly pushing buttons she somehow managed to navigate to the delete screen, select yes, select the specific file and then select yes confirm again. Unbelievable.
But on the plus side, when I re-created the character I was drafted by the Jays
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
sorry.....oh well....I didn't buy the kids those machines
figuring I like seeing their little faces….not my oldest bought one and they play it a lot
Come on Lunchbox, wrap it around Pesky
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
Alright, now we just have to pray that the first half inning is NOT the only offense tonight
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
ok scott
settle down and just retire the next 26 batters.
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
Here's to Richmond
In Las Vegas next year. He can be emergency if someone gets hurt, but he better not make the team next year.
he was terrific early in the year...I get the feeling pitching more innings than he ever has before is catching up to him
he’s likely tiring.
I have a feeling he just isn't very good
After one of my baseball games the team watched a Jays game and one of our guys, that knows more about pitching than I was explaining how Richmond would be as good as he was early all year. I argued that he may slow down, but would be fine. I have changed my mind. He isn’t very good and should be the AAAA type and move out of the way for the prospects and be just a stop gap emergency guy.
well anyone that can throw 94 MPH will get chances...
he needs a pitch to throw against lefties and then he’d be good…he’ll never be better than a 4th or 5th starter but he could be good in that role.
fair enough
But I would rather see Zep, Cecil, Purcey up here next year with Roy, Marcum, Romero…or something.
yeah you might get that...
but then don’t be surprised if richmond finds a pitch to throw to lefties and does ok. Like all the young guys, once you get well beyond what you have thrown for pitches in a season you’ll tired
might depend on how much more life his fastball could have if he was in the pen
if he could dial it up to 96 or so with good location . . .
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
i'd rather have him AAA for injury coverage
than have him sitting in the bullpen as a long-man, if it meant that he wouldn’t be able to make spot starts
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
hey hey

Hey
you’re just in time to see the power of ugly
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
I saw that every day
being that I shared a room with you. Oh snap!
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I may be ugly
but I’m not Kevin Youkilis-ugly
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
really a poorly thought out insult on my part
considering how much we look alike
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
That Jason Bay graphic
made me try to remember him testing positive for steroids (I have the sound muted)
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
Tabler thinks Bay is good defensively
We should show him UZR for the last 3 years.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
people think that for some reason
maybe because he is white, a good guy, and not fat, people assume he must be a good defender. I think he was better before his knee surgery.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Back to the original point, do you even think Tabbie knows about stuff like UZR? Or would listen to it? I find most baseball people tend to ignore that sort of stuff
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
no he doesn't know.
And he wouldn’t look because then he wouldn’t be able to just say things off the top of his head
you are a good defender of Jays' management when you want to be
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
shouldn't I be eating supper before you?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Im so hungry, but I don’t want to grab something to eat while the girls are lying down with their bottles. It will distract them and they won’t go to sleep…
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
mine went to sleep about an hour ago
she is potty training, so that’s been fun
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Molars coming in on the twins… and both walking and what not now, so they have been getting into all kinds of troubles
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
fun stuff -- I'm just excited
at the prospect of a day where I am not cleaning diapers in the toilet anymore!
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Ah you use cloth diapers then?
We thankfully have a membership to Costco and buy disposables in bulk. Thank god we don’t do formula anymore though. Bloody stuff costs a fortune.
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
yup
we are cheapo parents: cloth diapers, never bought formula. Have to start saving now, who knows how much grad school will cost in 20 years!
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Already started the RESP for the girls to save for school. Wish I had more back when the market tanked because we have done pretty well on the investment that did put in.
Probably won’t be enough to cover everything when they head off to University but it should help a lot.
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
hilarious how early you have to start, right?
My mom went with the old, “try not to drop him on his head and hope he gets a scholarship” approach
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I escaped from my high chair and fell on my head
and I got a scholarship, but I turned it down to go to a better school.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
I fell down the stairs on my head
still managed a scholarship, but to a school in Louisiana
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I should of got a scholarship!
When I was 16 Months, I had managed to climb out of my crib, My parents came into the room to find me sitting on the floor.
Apparently I had thrown all of my stuffies on the ground and then climbed over the rails
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
haha
according to my moms, I used to climb out of my crib all the time. that scared me for Anna, but she never did it.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I would say it’s definitely a boy thing. My brother was the worst for climbing into and out of everything. My daughter never even figured out she could climb out of bed when we had her on a mattress on the floor with a guard rail – too funny!
(p.s. don’t forget to put some $$$ by for weddings too…future Fathers of the Bride(s)LOL)
I love arguments where people says if you don't agree with me you must think X.
People telling me if I want the Jays to spend money next year, then obviously I don’t want them to contend for the the 4 or 5 seasons after……hmmmm that’s makes sense….
it just seems silly to me.
If you want to try next year, you are sentencing us to years of being crappy….while telling me the way to win is the Rays way. 10 years of top 3 draft choices……
Oh yeah the Rays are doing a bang up job this year huh.
Doesn’t work as well when not every member of your team is having a career year
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
Well
rays have had some rotten luck this year. but so have we.
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
Rotton luck turns a contending team into 20 games behind? I would think luck may quantify some of that but even still
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
last year they had good luck
this year they had bad
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
the Rays, I mean, not us
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
part of the luck is also the division
but, yeah, we’ve had some rotten luck. even with our division, our pythagorean record is still 80-76.
rays pythagorean is 81-76
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
Fair enough, but that is still not where people pegged them at this point. They said they would be a good amount over 500 and contending.
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
Yes
but Pythagorean record is strictly runs for and runs against. Rays have underscored their wOBA and given up way more runs than tRA would assume
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
Haven't we also underscored our wOBA?
On account of our poor RISP.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
if you are slow
you should underscore your wOBA, but the Rays are fast.
If you are bad defensively, you should give up more runs than tRA would indicate, but the Rays are good defensively.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Alright, Im gonna defer to you guys and your stats on this one, since I am not so up to speed when it comes to them all.
All I know is at the start of the year I didn’t think the Rays would be as good and would finish 2nd or 3rd a far amount back of Boston.
I did not see the Yanks doing this well, but at least I was right with the Rays and being behind Boston
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
hahaha
not trying to jump on you and I didn’t think the Rays would necessarily be as good as last year, either. I’m just making the point that you shouldn’t count them out next year. Then again, I’d say don’t count us out, either
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
Nah I don’t mind, I like learning about the stuff, I was just saying.
I thought they would be good, but I kept getting told how they would challenge for the division and be awesome for years and I kept saying I dunno, I think they are going to fall back
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
I'm right there with you
lots of stuff broke right for the Rays last year, and even still, our run differential was still better than theirs. If they didn’t have us to beat up on, they’d really have struggled this season.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
err Sorry if I ruined it. Im watching the HD feed on Sportsnet. are you watching online or on tv?
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
I have a 50 inch rear projection I got about 4 years ago for $1k
A 52" LCD would be nice, but I have no idea what I’d do with the old one. Couldn’t really move it into my bedroom.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
well that's the player you got....
I do think if he learned to take a walk he’d level things a bit. Prove to them you won’t chase everything and you might see stuff to hit more of the time.
can't argue with a 10-spot against Boston in the 5th inning
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
it seems ridiculous
that we are on expanded rosters and after one injury Kevin Millar is our best option for third base
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
that doesn't mean we couldn't call up more...
or that we shouldn’t call up more. Is stupid not to have a backup at SS or at 3B
We do have a backup! Its your favorite player
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
Let's give Ruiz some reps at short
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
He and Marcum played Short in high school/college didn’t they?
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
Marcum did, in college
I think Casey played first base
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
/starts to sing.
For the love of money
People will steal from their mother
For the love of money
People will rob their own brother
For the love of money
People can’t even walk the street
Because they never know who in the world they’re gonna beat
For that lean, mean, mean green
Almighty dollar, money
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
tough for me to stomach
that I support a major-league team that is too cheap or too poor to fill its roster with players who are not Kevin Millar
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
speaking of money
yesterday at the game, man, they were selling the hell out of concessions
there were 39k people there … I am sure the did at least 500k in food sales …
the jays store, they had a sale on, was so backed up that they are closing the doors and only letting in a few folks at a time
good gate day for the jays fer sure
games like that
tell me that if the team invested in the team, fans would reward them. I bet the Rays don’t come close to that for their last home game
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
especially if they spent it smart
seemed like they took payroll to $100 and while attendance went up steadily, it was obviously going down this year no matter what because of the economy, so the team decided in advance to cut its losses. I hope the calculus is different next year
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
As long as we kept getting it every year
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
aren't the Cards
going to keep Holliday?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
They're going to try
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
But with such attractive proposals that we are going to throw at him… I mean come on. We’ve got Turf!
Its practically extinct in the bigs. And we still got it! That has to count for something right?
Right? Hello?
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
See! New Turf! Woo! Can’t resist that!
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
I don't see how you could sign Holliday and Bay
They’re both LF only. Are we moving Lind to 1B and DHing Bay?
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
I don't think Pudge has 3 more years left in him
I’d sooner bring back Hot Rod.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
Harden's good if he's healthy
Big if.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
they really need to find a way to draw folks in earlier
lots of people still trickling in, even past the 3rd inning
they hsould have entertainment outside the park early and stuff to do inside to get folks there earlier
i was asking one of the attendants about Windows restaurant, which overlooks the field … cuz it is always empty
he did not know fer sure, but siad that there is a contract dispute which is keeping it closed — contract dispute between Jays/Rogers and Renaissance hotel I guess
maybe Hugo can step in and intermediate to resolve the dispute
we don't have billable hours
where I work
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
oh, i was just thinking, is that why the hard rock stadium pulled out of skydome … are they clearing space for more seating as well
