Jays, Marcum Avoid Arbitration
The Jays announced a deal with pitcher Shaun Marcum today, avoiding arbitration in Marcum's first eligible year. Marcum will get $850,000. Marcum didn't pitch in the majors last year but is a candidate for the Jays #1 starter job if he can complete a successful return from ligament replacement surgery. Marcum was 9-7 in 2008 for an offense-starved Jays team, posting splendid numbers: a 3.39 ERA over his 25 starts, a 1.16 WHIP, and 123 Ks and 50 walks over 151 innings for the Jays. Marcum was similarly effective in 2007, particularly after he became a member of the starting rotation.

Sounds good for both
I saw him make a few rehab starts in AA this past season and he was looking decent. Of course they didn’t let his pitch count get too high but in the 4 or so innings he pitched he looked good each time. My memory is a little shaky but it can’t have been more than 1 run and few walks each time.

jays made out well here
and if he pitches well, i wouldn’t be surprised to see them lock him up into his free agency years after this season
