Jays avoid arbitration with everyone
Hoping this is the end of the press releases for a little bit.
BLUE JAYS AGREE TO TERMS WITH FRASOR, TALLET & ACCARDO
The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have agreed to terms with the following players on contracts for the 2010 season; RHP JASON FRASOR at US $2,650,000, LHP BRIAN TALLET for US $2,000,000 and RHP JEREMY ACCARDO on a US $1,080,000 contract.
FRASOR, 32, posted a 7-3 record with a 2.50 ERA and 11 saves in 61 games. The seven wins represented a career high and were T-4th among all AL relievers. The 5-10, 175 lb. Chicago, Illinois native is 19-23 with 32 saves and a 3.78 ERA over six seasons.
TALLET, 32, made a career high 25 starts last season among his 37 games, going 7-9 with a 5.32 ERA. The 6-7, 215 lb. left-hander is 13-15 with a 4.32 ERA in four seasons as a Blue Jay. Has a career record of 14-17 with a 4.29 ERA in 189 games, 31 starts for Toronto and Cleveland (2002-2005).
ACCARDO, 28, appeared in 26 games for Toronto last season, compiling one save and a 2.55 ERA. The 6-1, 192 lb. Mesa, Arizona native has recorded 38 saves and a 3.81 ERA in 199 games over five seasons with Toronto and San Francisco (2005).
So all the arbitration guys are signed. I never understand why we have to wait right up to the deadline for these things but then good thing there is a deadline or nothing would get done. Which, of course, is how I live my life too.

Sometimes I wish those deadlines were more than a month away from the first day of spring training. A month isn’t a long time to deal with the fallout and still try to get the rest of the team together.
I also wish the draft pick signing deadline wasn’t so close to the end of the minorleage season.
the deadline being that close to spring doesn't matter that much
because they know the players are going to be with the team. It is just a matter of the exact amount they are going to be paid.
I wonder what the plan is with Accardo this year…
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
Brandon League's old spot is now open. That's where you'll find Accardo in 2010.
Unless he beats Frasor for the closer’s job, methinks.
Glad to see they re-signed Tallet and Frasor, though Accardo I’m not too big on. Anyway, completely off topic, I really hope Wells has a good year this year so that he can silence all these people that are on his case for not producing like he’s done in the past. If he’s fully recovered from injury I don’t see any reason why he can’t or shouldn’t have a much better year than he did last season.
He had a decent year in 08.
Hit .300 + 20 HRs in just over 100 games, despite suffering+recovering from hamstring and wrist injuries.
I think if he is truly 100% healthy, he can put up big numbers again.
HEADING STRAIGHT FOR THEM, I PRESS DOWN MAH GUNS!
Yeah I know, but a lot of people are on his case because of the bad season he had last year, but nobody who complains and says the Jays need to get rid of Wells seem to consider the fact that he was hurting all of last year, which most likely contributed considerably to his poor numbers.
One of the reasons that people get on Wells is that he’s now had quite a few years with injuries that have greatly reduced his contributions. I think what has a lot of fans worried is that there actually may not be much bounce left in the bounce back. I hope he s able to contribute and have a good year but I can’t say I’m very optimistic about it.
Fixed this for you

Um if he produces this year and really helps, why the hell would they seek to dump him? He’s already signed, no sense in getting rid of him. If he does produce I wouldn’t want to see him go anywhere.
he'll never produce at a $21M/season level
That’s like Pujols territory. I don’t doubt (well, I do, but I’m willing to acknowledge the possibility) that he can rebound to the point where he’s a half-decent player overall (i.e. not the worst at his position in all of MLB, as he was this year), but he’s not going to hit .310/.380/.520 with Gold Glove defense in CF, which is about what it would take to be worth that kind of dough.
I’m still hopeful, though, that the economy recovers to the point where a few teams decide mid-season that they have money to spend. “Contenders” sometimes get stupid at the deadline and are willing to take on contracts they otherwise wouldn’t. It’s not like I’m expecting anything in return, and we’d probably have to send at least some money, but I could see the Yankees at some point saying “this guy might help us out, the Jays will kick in some cash, and it’ll only average out to [let’s say] $15M a season over 4 years. We can do that.”
Or, we put him on waivers and some team makes a mistake and claims him to try to block a team above it in the standings from getting him. Then we drop the bomb. Hey, worked with Rios.
Getting out from $21M a year, or even halving it, could open up a whole range of possibilities over the next few seasons. I say “could” because chances are pretty decent that the saved money will go nowhere but into Rogers’ coffers along with the Burnett, Rios, and Rolen money. But assuming that at least some gets reinvested into the team, that’s a windfall, particularly if the market for FAs stays as tight as it is. There are way better players than VW out there who are signing for a whole lot less. Matt Holliday and Jason Bay will both earn less than VW per season. Johnny Damon might sign for under $5M this year, and certainly it’ll be less than $7M. The list goes on. In fact you could get Johnny Damon and Jason Bay for less than what you’d be paying VW, or about the same.
If I were AA I would make offloading VW one of my highest priorities, and I think it can be done within the next 8 months or so if the Jays are strategic about it and are willing to pony up some cash to get out from under this deal. If VW is still around in a year, we’ll know that it likely wasn’t a priority, and that would probably be because AA figured out that the saved money wouldn’t be made available to him anyway, so there was no point.

It would be nice to get rid of the contract, but I would not say it is a burning priority, as you indicate.
There is little doubt that VW`s contract (below) is on the waiver list every year and nobody had gone for it.
REMAINING PAYOUTS ON WELLS CONTRACT
2010 – $12.5M
2011 – $23M
2012 – $21M
2013 – $21M
2014 – $21M
I guess if VW had a great rebound year, some team might make a grab it. The closer to contract expiry and the better VW`s performance, the more likely it is to be claimed. That said if VW performed like in 2003 (317/.359/.550 incl 118 runs and 117 rbi), he might be worth it.
In any case, I do not think it would be wise for the Jays to eat $10M a year. That is a bit much as the Jays will have to replace VW. If the Jays could get someone to take the contract, and the Jays kick in $5M and VW does not revert to 2003 performance, than waiving might be smart.
To me, extracating the team from this contract is near impossible and thus not a priority.
