Manny being Manny?

From MLBTRADERUMORS:

Manny Ramirez would like to play for the Blue Jays under new manager John Farrell, the slugger told ESPN's Enrique Rojas (story in Spanish).  Ramirez and Farrell crossed paths on the Red Sox, of course.  Manny added that he had hernia surgery two weeks ago and was never 100% during the season.  He feels like he has a lot of baseball left and can stay healthy as a designated hitter.

Ramirez, 38, hit .298/.409/.460 in 320 plate appearances for the Dodgers and White Sox this year.  That's a down year by his standards, but it's also the best OBP of any free agent.  Manny said he's liked the Blue Jays since they had great Dominican players in the 80s.  To make room for Ramirez at DH, the Jays would have to use Adam Lind at first base.

Star-divide

Well...interesting to say the least, not sure bringing in an aging slugger ala Frank Thomas a few years ago is the right move but if the plan is to play Lind at 1B and Snider/Wells/Bautista in the OF then the DH spot could be open, Manny on a 1 year incentive laden deal might be a ok, if he succeeds he could be moved for something useful at the deadline...

More importantly

This is a major free agent saying that he would like to play for the Jays simply because of who the manager is. Even if it doesn’t pan out, other free agents are at least going to consider Manny’s words, which could make attracting other free agents a little easier.

I don’t mind giving Manny a incentive laden 1 year contract with maybe 1 or 2 vested or optional years added on. This is provided that the Jays think that Lind can play 1st and backup LF.

Mind you that this rumor about Manny wanting to play here predates the signining ( and even the final interviewing) of Farrell.
It was mentioned more than a month ago in the fan590, and the reasoning then was “Manny has great hitting record at the Rogers centre, and he’d like to pad up his numbers” or something of that sort.

You could do a lot worse at DH than Manny. Just leave him off the field! (Unless you want to water the artificial turf, of course…)

We shouldn’t repost an article from another website in its entirety. This was a fanshot up on the main page with a link to MLB Trade Rumours.

Type A?

If Manny is a type A free agent there is NO WAY that AA would give up draft pick(s) for him.

by JaysFan101 on Oct 26, 2010 1:01 PM EDT reply actions

he is a type A

but there is no way he’s tendered (because he will cost too much money) so we won’t give up picks.

I say we keep Bautista at 3

and plug Manny in 4, if we do sign him. Manny is still a fantastic hitter, and could guarantee more fastballs for Bautista to crush.

I heard JP Ricciardi mention before that Manny wanted to play in Toronto and that he'd shout it out to JP everytime he saw him.

that being said, he’ll still surely cost $5-7 million a year, if not more (considering what Damon got last year). Jays have money coming off books though with Halladay and BJ ($16 M). I like it. I doubt AA would do it though. They’re looking to diversify their offense and Ramirez is just another slugger.

If you look at his stats from the past three years or his career numbers

His OBP is over .400 which is exactly what the Jays have been needing, our OBP leader last year was Jose at .378 then Lewis at .332.

with respect to money coming off the books

it’s eaten up directly by raises to Wells and Bautista, so it would still take new money to sign him

There's still the $20M/year that the team hasn't been spending since JP got Lame Ducked.

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

by Torgen on Oct 26, 2010 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

even with the money coming off the books

the raises to Wells and Bautista keep the payroll in the $75-80mil range before anyone new has been signed. Do we know if Rogers is willing to go above that on payroll this season?

by SuckaMD on Oct 26, 2010 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe AA has said he can get more money from Rogers when it is warranted.

For obvious reasons pure numbers are never released but I have no reason not to believe AA in this. Rogers has shown in the past the willingness to spend if they believe in the plan being presented.

by JohnnyG on Oct 26, 2010 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

that's true

but still, I doubt Rogers will be crazy about spending 6-9M of new money per year unless AA can dump/cut some salary too

wells made $21m this year

he’s not getting much of a raise.

by ayjackson on Oct 26, 2010 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

E5 and Lyle

would be another $12m freed up

by ayjackson on Oct 26, 2010 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

according to Cot's Contracts

Wells actually made $16M this year, and is making $26M next year. that’s $10M. and we could bring back E5 still. I didn’t consider the relievers (probably filled, at least partially, internally) or Lyle though. suddenly Manny seems more reasonable.

those include pro-ration of bonuses not actual cash expense

it’s an accounting figure that smooths expense. it’s more relevant to an accounting guy than an operations guy – though both are important to Rogers.

by ayjackson on Oct 27, 2010 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

in cash terms

Wells made $21m last year and will make $23m this year….according to Cot’s.

I for one

really hope they hold on to Downs (if they can get him for around the same amount of money). he would really help to solidify the bullpen.

we can solidify the pen by signing someone else

there are some interesting relievers available…replace Downs with FA and accumulate picks in the process.

by ayjackson on Oct 27, 2010 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

tough to pass up the two picks

as much as I like Downs, and as great as he has been

love downs

he’s always been good for us….shouldn’t tarnish the memory by keeping him around into his late 30’s.

by ayjackson on Oct 27, 2010 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

fair points

I suppose I wouldn’t be unhappy either way, especially if the team only signs him as a type A (unlikely, but would be nice)

Well they moved it around. Pumped up scouting and threw money at Hech and more draftees and what not.

But I understand what you mean.

by JohnnyG on Oct 26, 2010 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I would be happy if the Jays signed Manny

Not maximally happy—I think Thome will be cheaper, healthier, probably better, and doesn’t have a recent 50 day PED suspension on the books—but it would be refreshing to see the Jays try to win a game this year at an organizational level.

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

by Torgen on Oct 26, 2010 5:29 PM EDT reply actions

here what you're saying

and saw that Klaw agreed, but somehow I feel more comfortable that Manny could put up better numbers than Thome.

by ayjackson on Oct 26, 2010 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions

And be more fun

And more "friendly to the turf under the scoreboard… ;-p

Agreed - Lets Get Manny!

His stats look good, and he is the type of hitter who will age better than a Thome. He has always hit for a high average, is really more of a line drive hitter than a home run hitter. With Lyle coming off the books, this would be a great move. I also like the potential of trading him at the deadline – I bet no matter what someone will give up something for him.

by Natescavich on Oct 27, 2010 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't know if I agree

Thome just put up a big season, yes, but two of his last three seasons have been under 2 WAR (no fielding runs at all). Manny has never put up a 2 WAR offensive season and had a 2 WAR half-season last year and a 3.5 WAR 2/3-season two years ago. and I’m (mostly) just guessing that Thome will be more of an injury concern (though all guys that age are)

sorry...

that should be Manny has never put up a SUB-2 WAR offensive season, and the 2 WAR half-season and 3.5 WAR 2/3 season numbers are his offensive numbers, as he would DH in Toronto
