Nick Johnson in Toronto?
Although I also am open to the idea of Manny Ramirez coming to Toronto, and would prefer that option provided he can be signed for around 8 million, another option at Dh or even first base is Nick Johnson who fits well into the Jays most glaring weakness (OBP) though he probably won't hit for as high of average as Ramirez he probably could be signed for under 5 million. His career OBP is over .400 and though he's not fast if he batted after Escobar, I don't really want him running to much with Bautista next anyways.
1. Escobar – SS
2. Johnson - 1b
3. Bautista 3b
4. Wells – RF
5. Snider – LF
6. Lind – 1B/DH
7. Hill – 2B
8. JP/Molina – C
9. Mastroianni - CF

As a former Expo, I'm sure Johnson would appreciate
Canada’s subsidized health care.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

Really?
While I respect that Johnson is known for a good eye and solid bat, the fact that you have him pencilled in as a 1B is just laughable considering the amount of injuries he’s sustained throughout his career. He couldn’t even stay healthy as a pure DH for the Yankees, so what makes you think that a year later he’s going to magically stay healthy for a full season, even as a DH, and can be relied on if the Jays were to make a push into the playoffs. He had 98 ABs this year and will get injured automatically once playing on the Jay’s artificial surface which is known to be rougher on players than natural surfaces. He’d probably get injured just running the bases or taking warm-up.
You’re right in saying we could benefit from a guy who gets on base alot, and maybe if we’ve set our first and secondary options at the position and Johnson is still available it would be worth a chance to snag him, but I don’t think this is the type of player we should be going after right now. He just had his chance as a full-time DH for NYY and failed miserably. Manny, on the other hand, would have a much better chance to stay healthy as a full-time DH as he had to play the field in LA. The JAys shouldn’t be looking in the direction of too many old veterans like this, but I’d never sign Johnson, especially with a guy like Manny as a potential investment.
if you haven't heard it, you haven't been on here much
He really doesn’t have the range that you’d like from a CF.
not anymore, at least
trouble is, we don’t really have anyone else ready to take that role. We had Rios, but he got shipped out (overall, probably for the better, but he was the logical heir apparent to CF). We have Mastroianni who may be ready defensively, but that’s a pretty big hole in the batting order. Barring a trade for Rasmus (and who knows how likely that is), I think we’re stuck with Vernon in CF next season.
It is worth noting, though, that despite his defensive inadequacies, fangraphs had VW as the 3rd best CF in the AL last year (put up 4.0WAR, putting him behind Hamilton and Gardner) and 2nd best offensively. That’s not a bad guy to have around IMHO.
Also, just sign Manny to DH and be done with it. If not him, get Pena, or Konerko, or Thome, or Thames…. No shortage of big bat DH/1B types this offseason. With that glut on the market at only 16 DH spots to go around, contract values for these guys could come down pretty heavily.
You brought this on yourself

Nick Johnson, Or Derrick Lee ?
I would like to suggest Lee over Johnson. As much as I want to have the ideal Nick Johnson on my team that guy hasn’t existed for the past three years at least, murdered most likely by the injured-money-hole- Nick-Johnson.
Lee would probably accept a two year deal, is a great defender and still has some pop and decent obp. He hits a lot of dpb’s so I admit he would be a great heir to the Overbay throne. I just see Konerko as costing to much, same goes for LaRoche (who I would prefer on a three year deal at most), and Pena would cost to much in terms of money and years.
second that
I’d prefer Lee- solid defender and probably has another good year in him yet. I’d like to see what he could do in the American League
well +1 to that
still raises the issue of only 3 outfielders (one of whom is Fred Lewis), so you have to fill either LF (if Snider is in RF), RF if not, and CF if you think Wells is done in CF. everyone knows what I think about that (call up Mastroianni, if you don’t) but it’s still a hole that needs filling in any case
I’d sign him. I’ve always liked his game. It’d all depend on the price. Say, a 2 yr/3mil contract with the second year being a team option and I’d bite. I think it’d be a great idea to put the money we may invest in manny to some other use if we can get a .400 OBP with aprox the same power (as manny is statistically unlikely to ever hit over 25 HRs again, and has hit over 20 only once in the last 4 years).
