The days grow short, when you reach September: Our pitchers in September.
Our pitchers went 16-14 with a 4.62 ERA.
Ricky Romero: 3-1, 4.50, 30 innings, 28 hits, 12 walks, 21 k over 5 starts. It is really nice to see him finish well. 3 quality starts of the 5.
Shaun Marcum: 2-1, 3.76, 38.1 innings, 35 hits, 8 walks, 36 K over 6 starts. Yeah he should have had one more win. A really strong finish, 5 quality starts of the 6.
Brett Cecil: 4-0, 6.92, 26 innings, 42 hits, 9 walk, 12 k in 5 starts. How does a guy go 4-0 with a ERA of 7? It helps when your team scores you 40 runs over 5 games. He had 2 quality starts and 2 really bad starts in the month.
Marc Rzepczynski: 3-1, 3.90, 32.1, 34 hits, 16 walks, 29 k in 6 starts. He won his last 3 starts. Nice way to finish the season, every start of the month he lowered his ERA.
Shawn Hill: 1-2, 2.61, 20.1, 24 hits, 4 walks, 14 k over 4 starts. Four pretty good starts, he didn't make it to 6 innings in any of his starts but the team was every careful with his arm. It could be interesting next spring.
Kevin Gregg: 1-2, 4.22, 7 saves, 10.2 innings, 12 hits, 6 walks, 6 k in 13 games. He only had one blown save in the month and one other loss when he allowed an unearned run. He was better than I thought he'd be this year, but then I had very low expectations. He may have worn down a bit at the end. He gave up an earned run in just 4 of his appearances and more than one just once.
Shawn Camp: 0-1, 4.63, 1 save, 11.2, 18 hits, 1 walks, 7 k in 14 games. A ton of hits this month. He pitched a lot. He gave up an earned run in 5 of his appearances and more than 1 just once.
Casey Janssen: 1-0, 3.52, 7.2 innings, 7 hits, 6 walks, 8 k in 8 games. I thought he could have thrown a bit more. He gave up too many home runs his year. He gave up an earned run in 2 of his appearances and more than 1 in 1 this month.
Jason Frasor: 0-1, 2,19, 1 save, 12.1 innings, 10 hits, 3 walks, 11 k in 12 games. He gave up earned runs in 2 games, more than 1 in 1.
Scott Downs: 0-0, 1.86, 9.2 innings, 6 hits, 2 walks, 8 k in 10 games. He gave up 2 runs in one of the games.
Brian Tallet: 01, 6.23, 13 innings, 18 hits, 5 walks, 11 k in 8 games. He gave up earned runs in 5 of the 8 games and more than one 3 times.
David Purcey: 1-0, 6.48, 8.1 innings, 9 hits, 5 walks, 10 k in 9 games. Gave up earned runs in 3 games, more than 1 run twice.
Brad Mills: 0-0, 6.43, 7 innings, 6 hits, 4 walks, 5 k in 4 games.
Josh Roenicke: 0-0, 7.11, 6.1, 7 hits, 2 walks, 6 k in 7 games. He gave up earned runs in 3 of the games, more than 1 run in one of them.

no drabek?
not a bad debut even though he went 0-3.
2 of 3 quality starts, 4.76 era, 12 Ks in 17 innings with only 5 walks. 18 hits though and almost no run support at all.
Very interesting for next year
What to do with all the pitchers…
Assuming we have Marcum, Morrow, Cecil and Romero starting.. .There should be Zep, Hill and Drabek fighting for the 6th spot (maybe Litsch and Mills too)
Keep Gregg as the closer.. Maybe have Purcey and Camp fill the set up role with Jansen and Mills for long relief… JR and Accardo could easily fill out the pen.. and there are a ton of young options too.. Very exciting going forward
I think you might find Hill looking towards long relief.
If you expand his stats over the 20.2 innings he pitched, to roughly around Tallet’s 77.1, you get something like 1.5 WAR, compared to Tallet’s -0.1 WAR.
There are sample space issues, and Tallet is a left hander (which seems to excuse him of lots of shortcomings), but I would be happy with Hill in long relief.
no carlson?
To Infinity. And BEYOND!!!

I can't see why...
Morrow, with all due respect, is not a Doc-like ace yet. And the September Call-ups did rather well.
The whole point of having a deep rotation is that it does not depend on any single player.
And Morrow was still, technically, our #4 starter…
Festina Lente
any predictions for next year?
any ideas on where to find ten more wins among these guys?
what bat(s) is needed – or do we have enough?
if Hill and Lind had played at last year’s pace, would we have taken the title?
