2011 - what will the future hold?
With the post about the Jays biggest surprise in 2010, got me to thinking about the 2011 season for the Jays. My question to you would be what are you most looking forward to in 2011?
For me it is having Travis Snider play a full season...he started 2010 slow but was heating up before he got injured. When he came back he wasn't playing well (or a lot) but at the end of the season he was once again heating up. I am very intrigued to see what he can do in a full/healthy season. I think he will be streaky for his whole career but I'd like to see what he can do with a sustained hot-streak with no injury or end of the season (or being benched in favour of anyone and everyone) to stop it.
What do you look most forward to in 2011?

To expand on that
Our starting rotation to continue to be good and hopefully a good 5th starter. Things could really be great if our 5 main pitchers get better and not get injured by some freak accident
The draft
It’s supposed to be a strong draft class next year, and I’m hoping that management has the sense to let some of these guys walk (Buck, Overbay, Downs) in order to continue building a strong foundation in the farm system.
Cecil
accidentally cutting his finger making dinner while tripping on a staircase and fracturing his kneecap and run over by a mob of marathon runners and slipping on a banana peel. All at the same time

Our offseason acquisitions being the deciding factor in our winning a wild card berth.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
Jays winning 162 games!
Yay!

I'm interested to see
how Bautista will do….is 2010 a fluke or a one off. I’ll predict .260 32hr 96 RBI. Which is by any means a nice season but not what he did in 2010. Also I’m gonna go with Snider 135gp .278avg 29hr 81 RBI. That would be great. I want to see how Lind and Hill bounce back or if they even can. Good seasons from them on top of Bautista and Snider would be amazing. I would like to see who out of Romero Cecil Marcum and Morrow will be the ace. My bet’s on Cecil. If we can get 16 wins from him with 15 from Marcum and Romero with 14 from Morrow, we’ll be in good shape. I’m interested also in the releif pitching. Talet sucks an will not be here so who’s going to be the whipping boy for us. In all seriousness who will replace Downs and maybe Gregg. Lot’s of questions and lot’s of optimism and options. If things go well we could be looking at meaningful baseball in September.
Excuse me, do these effectively hide my thunder?
My gut feeling goes with Cecil too
I think he’s the most Under-rated (or maybe “unheralded” would be more accurate) starter that we have.

For me...
I want to see the one NEW big bat AA brings to the table – he’ll be either a 1st, 3rd or RFer. This NEW bat plus Bautista, a break -out Snider, Wells, Lind, Hill, Yunel and Buck or JP will give our Super Four (soon to be Super Five) starters and our New for 2011 re-worked bullpen all they need to contend.
Girls – we are close very – very – close to being a real contender.
I wish we had a better idea whether Lind could play 1B
because opening up DH would add a few options.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
New Manager
A swift transition/continuity under the new manager from the cito era would be nice. Let the young kids play, don’t try to change the philosophy too much since it’s been working, and avoid clubhouse controversy.
How about a second stint for Buck Martinez?
With Pat Tabler as his bench coach, and Rance at 1B?
(Damn me! I just gave myself nightmares for a couple of weeks!)

My top 5
1) Snider full season
2) The impact of a new manager
3) How’s Bautista gonna do
4) The 5th starter
5) Progression of our prospects in the minors
I’m also pulling for Litsch. I think he can surprise (like he always seems to do) a lot of folks.
2 things I am most looking forward too
1. continuing promise from our top 4 SP (Cecil, Marcum, Morrow and Romero)
2. full season of playing time for Travis Snider
Moving up in the standings
The Red Sox looked horrible this year, and if we’d played them better head-to-head, we’d have finished third. Also, the Yankees’ rotation is in disarray, and Pettitte, their second best, is old. If everything falls into place, we could beat one of them next year. On the other hand, almost everything fell into place this year, and we still finished fourth. Better than fifth, which is where most of the “experts” had us.
I look forward to JPA being behind the plate for most games this season, and please, management, do NOT try to convert him to 1B or DH. His value is in hitting pretty well while doing a good job handling a pitching staff and throwing out baserunners. First basemen are a dime a dozen.
I hope for the Jays to get a real leadoff hitter. Third and fourth hitters shouldn’t have such a large percentage of their taters being solo jobs. Doubles from clean-up hitters should score runs most of the time. For a guy who hit .270 with thirty HRS and leading the team in at-bats, Wells didn’t get enough ribbies in the three-hole. That’s not his fault.
I look forward to Morrow and Drabek developing quickly. We’ll never go anywhere with two number-two starters (Romero and Marcum) and three number-five starters (any three of Morrow, Cecil, Scrabble, Hill, Richmond, Litsch, and Drabek). I think Morrow can be a number-one starter someday, depending on whether or not (and how fast) the Jays’ pitcher handlers can undo the damage the Mariners did. For me, the jury is still out on Drabek. I hope the pundits and Jays fans on this site are correct, because if they are, Drabek can be another solid pitcher who puts in lots of innings and a sub-4.00 ERA year in and year out. I don’t think, though, that anybody is under the illusion that he will ever be Doc or even Steib.
I look forward to Romero, Marcum, Morrow, and Drabek pitching injury-free, because if they don’t, we won’t surpass last year’s win total in 2011.
hold on
you think Cecil is a “fifth starter”? the guy put up a 4.22 ERA in his second big league season with a 4.03 FIP. that’s very, very solid, and the kid is 23 years old.
that’s ignoring the inanity that is calling startes “second” or “fifth” starters in the first place.

I like Cecil...
… but it will take more than one season with a 4.22 ERA before I can look at him as a solid starter.
I don’t care what order they start in, but I think there is value in looking at pitchers as first starters (top fifth of the majors’ best 150 starters) vs second (#31-60) or fifth (#121-150). And I am projecting to the future, so yes, I understand that Cecil was better than the 121st starter this year, but I don’t expect that going forward, just like I didn’t expect it of Litsch after his rookie year.
Josh Towers finished his rookie year with a 4.49 ERA and once was 13-12, 3.71 for the Jays, but that alone didn’t make him a reliable future starter.
that's a fair point
but Cecil’s always been regarded as a very good pitching prospect, and his stuff is not even comparable to Towers’ (or Litsch’s, for that matter). he’s got the ability to throw heat Towers could never dream of. I really see no cause for skepticism
Prehistoric Hoops - We're back! And we have a real domain!
You've got me there
… and I sure hope you are right. I am looking for him to go deeper into games and to be more consistent next year. If those things happen, the sky’s the limit.
I look forward to a real leadoff hitter...
that can get on base, steal like crazy and maybe move Vernon out of CF! That’s what I want for Christmas and next year.
If Travis Snider is hitting leadoff next year I don’t think my brain will allow me function.
Even a mistake may turn out to be the one thing necessary to a worthwhile achievement

a 23 year old
with 106 OPS+ and over .370 OBA through his minors career (mostly from 19 to 21) and you don’t want to give him lots of at bats? please explan.
Prehistoric Hoops - We're back! And we have a real domain!
I want Snider to get lots at bats but not as our leadoff hitter.
You don’t project Snider as a middle of the order guy? He had 6 stolen bases this year and I’ll grant you he has a little better then average speed but he’s not exactly Ricky Henderson.
Maybe my last sentence was overly dramatic. I’d like it stricken from the record.
That’s another thing to look forward to next year: seeing where in the line-up Snider will hit.

middle of the order would be fine
but, as fun (or not?) as it is to discuss, the biggest difference between any spot in the lineup is 20 PA. there’s no reason to hit fast guys early in the lineup unless they get on base a lot and slow guys in the 4-5-6 holes, especially if they are good all-around hitters. to be honest, as long as Snider plays 150 games, I couldn’t care less where he hits.

Mastroianni
i hope he tears up ST and hits lead off for us next year
