The Marlin’s probably wanted to get this done before the big(ger) names were off the board. Quite a few teams have been linked to Buck, but as their second option behind Victor Martinez (the Red Sox for sure, Detroit I think…maybe a couple of other teams) so the Marlins got the deal done before Martinez was snagged and before they would have had to get into a bidding war with a team like the Red Sox.
Still, more money than I thought Buck would get. I was thinking somewhere along 3/$18 or maybe a 2 year deal.

Ugh, 3/$12M. Brain fart.

3 years is a little surprising
but at 30 (won’t be 31 until next July) Buck isn’t all that old and he only has to average about 1.3 WAR to be worth the $6 per year, which seems doable. Of course, if 2010 is his true talent level, it’s a bit of a steal for the Marlins.
While I’m not convinced of that (his walk rate in 2010 was miniscule and dropped significantly while his K rate held steady, and his BABIP was way out of whack), there are some reasons to be bullish – Buck is a hard worker and notably, his HR/FB wasn’t out of whack in 2010 and power is his most useful ability going forward (though moving from Toronto and the AL East parks to Florida and the NL East parks won’t help his cause). Also, it does bear remembering that Buck was fairly highly regarded as a young catcher (part of the Beltran deal if I remember right) and catchers improving offensively in their late 20s is not at all unheard of.

I wouldn't be shocked if the deal works out fine for the Marlins
and I wouldn’t really have been surprised to see something like 2yr 12 M + 6 M team option for a third yr w/ 1 M buyout but to be on the hook for three years for a 30 yr old catcher who’s really only had one good season (though to be fair, much of that is due to playing time, which might actually help him)
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
What do you think his over/under for homers over the three years is?
I saw someone saying the new park for the Marlins will be tough for righties to hit home runs in.
I can’t really figure out the Marlins, they trade Uggla, who has been very consistent for a bucket of balls and then sign Buck. They don’t make much sense to me. I’d have thought, with the new park coming they’d have tried hard to keep Uggla.
The Marlins are a wasteland
Their owner is generally considered one of the worst in the business. Apparently Rosenthal said the Jays had offered Roenicke, Farquhar, and either Mastroianni or Goins in exchange for Uggla. I’m not saying that’s a better offer than what they got, but they really got almost nothing of long-term value for a player with a solid track record like that. A reliever and a super-sub?? That’s a far cry from the talk of sending over a player like Cecil or JPA.
I don't see why you would pull the trigger that quick, if those were the offers
and yeah, as an old Expo fan, I know their owner is scum.
No arguments there
If I were a Miami taxpayer I would be just a “bit” upset that Loria was making bank while screaming poverty to get bonds to finance a stadium that will cost the city of Miami around $900 million in interest payments.

I think Buck's main payoff
with the Marlins is that he had a successful year with the young Jay’s staff. Whether or not he deserves credit is a different story but that’s probably what made the Marlins comfortable while committing that 3rd year. I wouldn’t do it honestly since you are paying a decent price for mediocre talent but they really need a catcher…

The good news from all this
He didn’t sign with Red Sox or the Yanks. From what I gathered looking at Overthemonster, they’re annoyed that because of this deal that Victor might cause the Red Sox to break the bank to keep him and/or a little upset that Plan B is not on the table anymore.
At least the Jays won’t have to face Buck (unless they play the Marlins.)

Good point
I remember my first reaction to seeing Buck’s name linked to the Red Sox was pretty negative. Obviously it’s a moot point now, but I wonder if Buck’s insider knowledge of the Jay’s pitching staff would have given Boston a big advantage in head-to-head meetings? At least it’s irrelevant now, and I’m happy Buck got 3 years with very good money.
Bye bye Buck
Good deal for John Buck, good pick-up for the Marlins, good draft pick for the Jays and good to deny Buck to the Red Sox. Thumbs up all around.
