Rule 5 draft 2010... Tim Collins

Kansas left Tim Collins unprotected for the upcoming rule 5 draft... He had great numbers in AA with 15/9 k in our organization as well as in the brave´s farm system. His AAA numbers are hot as well even though it is only a small sample size (like 20 innings with 1.13 ERA and 9.3k´s per nine innings... But with our bull-pen in limbo... i´d like to see AA take a shot at him in the draft!

What´s your opinion? Or who would you draft in decmber?

Hmmm, I’d be down for taking a shot at picking up Tim Collins via the Rule 5. Was sorry to see him traded. His numbers last year were great including 15 games at AAA. If we have space on the 40-man roster, then why not take a flyer on him and see if he might able to pitch at the big-league level this year.

eligible

are you sure he is eligible? As a High school sign he doesn’t seem like he has been around long enough to e eligible, but I’ve always been to lazy to remember the rules.

i found a report on a pirates pages where they listed interesting players who are available...

…they also listed Emaus as one of only 5 position players…

From PiratesProspects.com article on Rule 5 Draft eligible pitchers:

Tim Collins, Kansas City Royals

Collins split the 2010 season between three organizations. He started as the 19th best prospect in the Toronto system, and the top left handed relief prospect. Collins pitched 43 innings at the AA level with Toronto, putting up a 2.51 ERA, along with an impressive 15.3 K/9 and a 3.3 BB/9 ratio. He moved to Atlanta in the Alex Gonzalez/Yunel Escobar trade, and pitched eight innings, with a 1.12 ERA, a 15.8 K/9, and a 3.4 BB/9. Collins was moved to the Royals at the trade deadline, where he made the jump to AAA. He posted a 1.33 ERA in 20.1 innings the remainder of the season, with a 9.3 K/9 and a 3.5 BB/9. Collins has a fastball that tops out at 93 MPH, with a 12-to-6 curveball, making his strikeout numbers legit. He could compete for a regular bullpen role in the majors in 2011.

And here’s a KingsofKauffman article where the author talks about having thought the Royals might protect Tim Collins, which I gather suggests he’s now ripe for the picking by other teams.

I don't think he should be eligible....

JP signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2007 before he was 19 which means he should have 5 years before he is eligible, this is only four….I could be wrong but then so could the sites that say he could be drafted. The rule:

Players are eligible for selection in the Rule 5 draft who are not on their major league organization’s 40-man roster and:
– were signed at age 19 or older and have been in the organization for four years; or
– were signed at age 18 or younger and have been in the organization for five years.

Maybe you´re right, Tom...

but wouldn´t it be pathetical if the pirates does not only suck on field but on their website as well…

Maybe a trade chances the rules....

but he did sign in 2007, and was 17 at the time. The ones I’ve been wrong on are guys that have signed one year and then didn’t play until the next, but he started playing right when he signed.

If he was available, do we pick him is an interesting question. If it was last year, sure. Cito didn’t use the guys in the back of the pen anyway. This year I think it would depend if Alex pulled off a big trade or big free agent signing that put us where we ought to contend. If he did, I can’t see carrying a guy that likely wouldn’t be helpful.

umm

I think he signed a contract in 2006 but didn’t start playing until the 2007 season. And from my incomplete understanding his eligibility would be determined by whether he signed a 06 contract or 07 contract.

I'm going off this

on Mop Up Duty, it could be wrong but if he signed in 2006…he would have only been 16.

And, course he got into 7 games in 2007

which would make sense if he signed after the draft.

Thought he was undrafted...

he was draft eligible

so would have to go undrafted before being signed.

He was signed on July 20, 2007 – one month prior to his 18th birthday. I’m with Tom, he shouldn’t be eligible.

by ayjackson on Nov 22, 2010 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

yeah he was undrafted...he was signed after the draft that year..

It is too bad MLB.com doesn’t have something that would tell us who is eligible and who isn’t.

by Tom Dakers on Nov 22, 2010 1:53 PM EST up reply actions

Yup, it would sure make it a lot easier if MLB just listed who was and wasn’t Rule 5 Draft eligible!

I like Collins a lot, and feel that he is a far more realistic option in the pen then Rommie Lewis or Luis Perez. I’d love if they try and pick him up.

If he's eligible

it might be an interesting notion.
However one needs to cosider a potential overflow in the BP (what with all our potential “6th-starter-turned-long-reliever” guys…), and as he’s bound to occupy a spot on the roster, it would come on the expense of someone else. Now, me, I haven’t seen this guy pitch, but with all the glowing reference I hear, and assuming that Frasor, Gregg and Downs are gone (And Tallet, though I wonder why…), and assuming that he’s Major-League-ready, than by all means go for him.

However, these are a lot of assumptions.

But, what do I know? Over to you, Pat Hentgen! You (and AA) probably know best.

Just a guess, but if he is going to be drafted, I think he’ll get picked up before our draft position. I wonder why Kansas City didn’t/couldn’t trade him and if that is the reason Toronto and Atlanta did trade him?

No idea if this guy is correct but I generally think if your going to go through the trouble of making a list like this of your own team that you should be correct.

And he has Collins as ineligible for this year

Yeah, you’re probably right, I don’t think Tim Collins is eligible. He doesn’t appear on RoyalsProspects.com list of who’s eligible and there’s no discussion of that being in doubt while several people mention Collins having a shot at making the team out of Spring Training. I’m not surprised with his stingy ERA at AA/AAA last year. If he was eligible, I have no doubt that another team would have claimed him. I have a feeling he’s going to turn into a decent MLB reliever.

who is available?

Collins probably isn’t available. Maybe this isn’t the place to ask, but who is that we might be interested in? I can see JP adding a relief pitcher the team deems major league ready and with a high ceiling, or a 1B prospect who was once highly touted but has fallen out of grace.

I’m sure that JP will add a relief pitcher to the Mets, but I’m not sure what that has to do with the Jays ;-)

lol

Thank God that era is over. whoops. I can see AA adding a relief pitcher the team deems major league ready with upside, or a 1B prospect
