Blue Jays decline all options on Kevin Gregg
I am surprised. I thought they would at least pick up the one year option.

Wow
That is a suprise.
Either 2 things will happen:
Best case scenario: Jays trade for Brian Wilson
Worst case scenario: Papelbon becomes a Jay

Good move. Gregg is overrated by most fans here: he simply walks too many and after a fantastic start he was pretty bad. Collecting the supplemental round draft pick is the right move here.
We paid Gregg 2.75 Mil this past year. According to Fangraphs he had a 3.2Mil value.
Hes not a fantastic starter but he wasn’t over-rated.

Actually we only paid him 2mil last year… but he had a 0.75M buyout. Same result though.

i'm surprised...
I thought they’d keep him and let downs and frasor go. Maybe they will keep Frasor.

Would that make sense to ditch Gregg but keep Frasor? Frasor is a type A free agent, while Gregg is only type B, so if this is all about draft picks then surely you want the higher ones, no?
I’m thinking AA lets them all go – Downs, Frasor, Gregg – as he sticks with the plan of stockpiling young guys with 2011 being a rebuilding year. We’ve got a bunch of guys that can vie for the bullpen jobs or there’s trades or can always try sign another cheap free agent, who we can help have a good season then part ways with for another pick next offseason. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Yeah but would you sign Frasor if you were another team
knowing it would cost you a pick? I wouldn’t be surprised it Frasor accepted arbitration.
That’s true, while I think the Jays are prepared to let Frasor go, there’s the element of it that’s out of their hands. Might Frasor want to stay and thus accept arbitration? For instance his wife is from the Toronto area. That said, I read an interview with her near the end of the off-season where she said that while there was some trepidation about it, she was also excited by all the possibilities via the free agent market. Now in terms of Frasor wanting to stay out of fear that he’ll have a hard time landing a gig as a type A free agent. I don’t think these guys think that way, athletes at this level are super-confident in their own ability, he’s at the top of his game as a type A free agent, so why not test the waters in search of a multi-year deal and have a choice in where he plays.
while I'd like those draft picks
I’d also be fine with our FA relievers accepting arbitration. They are all good pitchers and if they accept, we get them back for a reasonable amount of money without committing to multiple years. If they decline, we get all those picks and free up money to sign some other FA’s (including Manny and maybe a different reliever or two). It’s really win-win for the Jays, as I see it
Delicious! Absolutely Delicious!
This means one of two things or two of two things.
Either by building for the future AA means – the – far – future - and 2011 isn’t even on the radar, give my 5 draft picks please. Or – he’s planning some serious trades and moves that will rebuild the pen from the top down. No Gregg, no Downs, no Frasor. Given that we also AT LEAST need one SERIOUS RFer, or 1st, or DH, or 3rd – man I can’t wait to see what trades await – ‘cause the boss has already said that’s the way he prefers to go.
AA – officially – this is now YOUR ship – gonna be Absolutely Delicious to watch what you’ve got planned!
Very surprised, the guy could have been a serviceable arm out of the BP even if he wasn’t given the closer position back….he wasn’t exactly expensive
Toronto Maple Leafs: Nowhere to go but up!
The option would have been 4.5 for one year or 8.75 for two.
If you believe in Fangraphs monetary values he wasn’t quite there,
But I am still surprised he didn’t take the one year.

isn't offering arbitration basically the same as picking up a one-year option
but with the added bonus of possibly getting a draft pick back instead of the player?
I realize that not picking up the option risks losing him, but I think Gregg’s production is replaceable if he decides to test the market. If he accepts, we get him back for a year at around the same money or even less than the option would have cost (I highly doubt he’s in for a doubling of his 2011 salary should he go to arbitration).
It all depends on the arbitration award if it goes that far.
I have a feeling Gregg’s agent will want to parlay the numbers of saves into a better contract then just a one year arb award

What will I do for a 9th inning heart attack next year?
In honor of the Jays 2nd Baseman who played with fire in more ways than one.

He's hard to judge
he did get a lot of saves but he was shaky at best. It was rocky more often than not. But the end result was he did get the saves and that was his job. The way he pitches though, I can’t see him duplicating those numbers again. He doesn’t pass the eye test.
Excuse me, do these effectively hide my thunder?
I guess they didn't like the value they were getting
for next year at 4M, he certainly at best would be playing to expectations. So if they get a sandwich pick for him, I’ll chalk it as a positive for Gregg’s only year and the draft pick as even better.

interesting
Perhaps the price was a bit high considering you also get a sandwich pick.
Question:
If a sandwich pick was for sale how much do you think it would sell for?
I’d guess $700,000.

Jays have to offer him arbitration first and he decline before we get the pick.
Not sure if that will happen. Hard to say.

If he accepts arbitration he will probably be cheaper than the option we just declined. Not taking the option would be a very good decision if that happens.

If we decline Olivo's option
we are valuing the sandwich pick at $500,000 + whatever we give to Colorado:
“By trading Olivo, the Rockies avoid having to pay the veteran a $500K buyout”

Great timing for that question
LOL we find out how much exchanged for Olivo :P.

On the arbitration offers...
Jay’s have to offer Gregg, Buck, Frasor and Downs arbitration to get the draft pick(s). I’m SURE they will.
By the way that could amount to 8 picks by the end of the 2nd round – including our own 1st and 2nd choices. I’m also beginning to think now that AA might be actually planning to sign one or two type A’s himself since he’ll have so many draft choices. Since AA has OFTEN said he’d vastly prefer trades to FA signings – could this be a feint to mislead the other teams while he swoops in and gets some juicy pieces? Interesting.
Also, if any – or even all of Gregg, Buck, Frasor or Downs – wanted to stay with the Jays for a 1 year contract – that wouldn’t be such a horrible mess would it?
Olivo
add in Miguel Olivo who we apparently just traded for and will also be Type B.

Someone on mlbtr thinks the Jays could have 8 pics in the top 50!!!

Jays may get two picks for Downs, two for Frasor, one each for Buck, Gregg and Olivo. With their own, eight potential picks in top 45-50.

top 20
but probably none in the top 20. We should just stay at the podium rather than walking back and forth so much.

Ahhh I get it now. I was confused… there are only six picks between 45 and 50…

Don't forget about Jeremy Accardo
I know he had a little run-in with the organization last year, but he could still be a candidate as a stopper next year.
I wouldn’t hold my breath on Accardo, but it’s a good point. Here we’ve got an opening now for closer, a guy in are organization who did a decent job closing for us, which while it was a few years ago he’s also just been named PCL Reliever of the Year. Were it not for his public run-ins with the organization, you’d think he’d be a logical candidate for a shot in spring training, if not to close, then as a setup guy. Just find it very hard to see a path back for him after calling AA a liar.
If you can only get a strikeout rate of 5.14 K/9 in AAA, I don’t think you’re good enough to be a closer in the majors..
well his K rate
was over 8 in 2009… and you can make the argument that it’s tougher to get strikeouts in the PCL because of the atmosphere (though, since he did it the year before, don’t really think that’s valid). but while I agree he is probably not good enough to be a closer (not likely to repeat his nothing short of excellent 2007) he could easily be a decent enough middle bullpen reliever
Hmmm..
Does a ballpark affect K rates? I mean… the batter ain’t hitting it anywhere.
by Minor Leaguer on Nov 5, 2010 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Foul ground can definitely play part in strikeout numbers.
Ballpark for the most part shouldn’t effect a swing and miss (contact %) for a pitcher although it is possible

It's possible that it can lead to bad habits though..
like nibbling on the corners because you are afraid to leave a pitch over the plate in that Vegas environment. Meaning less strikes and fewer strikeouts.
