AL Gold Glove Winners

Not a Jay among them:

Catcher: Joe Mauer, Twins
First base: Mark Teixeira, Yankees
Second base: Robinson Cano, Yankees
Third base: Evan Longoria, Rays
Shortstop: Derek Jeter, Yankees
Outfield: Carl Crawford, Rays
Outfield: Ichiro Suzuki, Mariners
Outfield: Franklin Gutierrez, Mariners
Pitcher: Mark Buehrle, White Sox

How Jeter can win again is beyond me.

Longoria, Crawford, Gutierrez, and Ichiro are great choices.

Cano, Jeter, Teixiera are poor ones (hmmm)

I like Mauer, but I doubt he’s the best fielding catcher in the league.

The outfield voting is surprisingly good.

makes you wonder if it was done by different people.

by Tom Dakers on Nov 9, 2010 6:22 PM EST up reply actions

Just because a .333 batting average can win the batting title some years doesn’t mean going 1-for-3 there is good.

I guess it’s “surprisingly good” if you were expecting them to get none right. That’s probably a fair sentiment.

by handknit on Nov 10, 2010 1:53 AM EST up reply actions

I read “Carl Crawford” as “Adam Jones.” That’s really embarrassing on my part.

by handknit on Nov 10, 2010 1:58 AM EST up reply actions

Unless Ichiro was allowed to bank outs from previous years he really shouldn’t be anywhere near this list. Doubly so considering his spot somewhat comes at the expense of Peter Bourjos.

by handknit on Nov 10, 2010 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

are you mad?

Bourjos played 50 games in 2010. Granted, UZR thinks he was spectacular in the field, but are you really surprised that a dude who played less than 1/3 of a season didn’t win?

Ichiro had a 15.6 UZR in right field this season and was equally good according to Dewan’s DRS. He was 3rd in the AL in UZR for outfielders and has been doing it for years now. You can always make a case for other players but Ichiro definitely earned his award.

also

Ichiro won the Fielding Bible award for 2010 for Right Field (which is given for all of MLB, not just the AL), with this blurb:

Ichiro wins his third award in 2010. He saved 12 runs defensively for the 2010 Mariners. His three-year total of 39 runs saved ties him with Hunter Pence for the highest total in that time period. Ichiro made three home-run-saving catches last year, saving five runs for the Mariners.

Rafael Palmero won it, playing a big 28 games at first base

So there it has happened before but no it would be pretty stupid to give the guy the award for playing just a handful of games

Amazing that Encarnacion was overlooked at 3B. Typical.

Haha

I just came to make a smart assed comment about E5.
Beat me to it,

Jeter? Really? Seriously?

I don't mean to brag, I don't mean to boast, but I'm intercontinental when I eat French Toast.

by craig in calgary on Nov 9, 2010 4:01 PM EST up reply actions

Nice to see Gutierrez finally getting some love for the stellar defence he plays. This should really have been his second one. Jeter getting another one is just annoying.

by HDave on Nov 9, 2010 4:03 PM EST reply actions

Jeter??

I wonder what Jeter’s gold glove was based on. Maybe fielding %?

Hopefully it adds a few million to his contract :)

by JaysSaskatchewan on Nov 9, 2010 4:03 PM EST reply actions

How Jeter keeps winning

From an MLB.com article on how the voting system needs to change:

One joke goes that Gold Gloves are like Supreme Court appointments: They’re hard to get, but once you have them, they’re for life.

by jabalong on Nov 9, 2010 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

i liked that line too

by benk on Nov 9, 2010 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

Fangraphs says...

Jeter ranks 7th of the 9 AL SS’s that it lists as qualifying in the AL. Regardless whether there are other candidates or not, it is ABUNDANTLY clear that Jeter is no longer the fielder he was and is wholly undeserving of this award. He rated a -4.7 UZR which only beat out the miserable Yuniesky Betancourt and Bartlett of the Rays. Alexei Ramirez scored a 10.8 UZR while Cliff Pennington scored a 9.9, making them the top 2 contenders. Both Elvis Andrus and ex-Jay Scutaro received higher UZR ratings as well. It’s not even like Jeter’s bat was light-years beyond these guys either, posting an OPS of .710, which is terrible.

I have no idea how these awards are determined, but whoever decided Jeter somehow earned this award was using heavy narcotics.

by brewerm on Nov 9, 2010 4:05 PM EST reply actions

"the fielder he once was"

yeah, he put up a 6 RAR season in 2009, which is his only season above 2 RAR. He also has 6 seasons with a RAR under -11 (including a -23 campaign!). he has never been a good fielder, period.

by benk on Nov 9, 2010 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

Good point

I should have clarified he is not the fielder he was in 2009. He’s one of the most overrated players in the game. I think it just reflects how out-of-touch managers are with sabermetrics when they are the ones picking the Gold Glove winners, right? How can all the Yankees win? It’s just absurd, if the manager have no clue what is actually going on, then find someone who does. And don’t look at the players or MSM sportswriters either.

well in the same breath they are complaining that Gardner didn't win, haha

and saying that Teixiera and Cano deserved to, so let’s not give them too much credit

by hugo on Nov 9, 2010 8:03 PM EST up reply actions

According to Fangraphs

Gardner’s UZR was 3 times that of Gutierrez with a better arm rating. Crawford and Ichiro were 2nd and 3rd in the AL in UZR, so those are good votes, but the Yankee fans have a legitimate beef with the Gardner snub.

Teixiera was 5th among qualifying 1Bs, so he shouldn’t have won. Daric Barton was far and away #1 according to UZR, with our Lyle coming in 2nd.

by SuckaMD on Nov 9, 2010 11:28 PM EST up reply actions

I agree Gardner wouldn't have been a bad choice, not at all

by hugo on Nov 10, 2010 12:31 AM EST up reply actions

Come on

Gardner is compared to LF, while Gutierrez is compared to CF. Add about 15 runs to Gutierrez because he plays centre as opposed to left and look at a bigger sample of fielding than one season. Complaining about Gutierrez winning is laughable. The past three seasons he’s been worth more than two wins per season.

If you want to call Gardner a snub because he beat Crawford out in the Fielding Bible awards, I still think you’re misinterpreting the word snub, but there’s certainly a case. Gardner may have been deserving, but he certainly was not snubbed — and especially not by Gutierrez. I think the point was that, given the players that won gold gloves, complaining about who won in the OF is garbage.

"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"

by jessef on Nov 10, 2010 9:10 AM EST up reply actions

that was my point

Gardner had a solid case, but there’s a difference between that and the GG selections which were clearly wrong.

interestingly,

this is the first time in 10 years that at least two of the al outfield winners weren’t center fielders. 2000 (Bernie Williams, Darrin Erstad, Jermaine Dye) was the last time, though winner Erstad did play 30 games in center that year. In the NL it’s been even longer (1998).

The perfect example of how the GGs are a meaningless award.

espn article

Of course, it’s not just us. Nobody who really follows baseball believes that Jeter is an outstanding defensive player. The Yankees, who see him every day, don’t believe that. The writers who cover the Yankees every day don’t believe that. Frankly, I’m not sure the managers and the coaches who actually voted for Jeter believe that.

I do feel very sorry for both Daric Barton and Alexei Ramirez.

Future scouting reports for good fielders should say “future Gold Glover, if on the Yankees”.

Cliff was absolutely amazing this year. Made some fantastic plays.

by HDave on Nov 9, 2010 11:29 PM EST up reply actions

Does anyone know how the voting actually works?

I know that the coaches and managers vote on the gold gloves. Do they only select one person or is there multiple selection with ranking? I’m pretty sure there is no run-off vote.

The reason I ask is because of the Jeter selection. I think there were a lot of potential candidates and he could have won with < 20% of the vote depending upon the voting process.

by JaysSaskatchewan on Nov 10, 2010 11:13 AM EST reply actions

it's a bit of a black box, I think

the only rule I know is that they can’t vote for their own players.

by hugo on Nov 10, 2010 11:32 AM EST up reply actions

The flaw might not be in who votes, but in the process? For example if he won 15% of the vote but none of the other 85% would have voted for him in a run-off. Or at least he wouldn’t have received greater than 50% of the run-off vote. It would be very interesting to see what % of the vote he received.

Overbay also finished second behind Daric Barton, while Aaron Hill and John Buck also received votes for the Jays at their respective positions.

On a side note, Buck also picked up a single vote for the Silver Slugger over at SM.
