Jays to Sign Octavio Dotel

At least according to Enrique Rojas, the Jays are about to sign reliever Octavio Dotel for one year and $3.2 million. We've talked about Dotel enough in the last couple of weeks that everyone already has an opinion on him.

$3.2 million isn't that much for someone that ought to be somewhere towards the back end of the bullpen. You can see his career numbers here. He has 105 career saves so if you think experience is all important for a closer, you should be happy.

His numbers don't look all that much worse than Kevin Gregg's did when we signed him last year, so I guess I'll save judgement until we see how he does for us. Gregg worked out a lot better than we figured it would.

Considering how gregg is being offered 2/8 mil and is seeking 2/12… i’m okay with this

I don't understand how AA is so smart when it comes to everything else

but still holds this completely illogical idea that the team needs an “established closer”…. especially given how guys like Downs/Accordo (off the top of my head) have proven that you don’t have to be tagged as a closer to close games successfully.

I just think he’s playing it safe….its good to have a guy with the exp in your pen but that does not mean the job is his.

Funny, by virtue of the fact that (as far as we know) he didn’t throw an insane offer of money & term at Soriano or Jenks I was thinking that he obviously doesn’t buy into the idea of “established closer”. He might feel that you need some experienced bullpen guys to back up the young starters but I don’t see that as saying that he buys into the Closer mystique.

I reckon we are going after 2012 draft picks as well as 2011 production. Everyone we sign is a potential draft pick. The strategy worked well last year.

by JaysSaskatchewan on Dec 26, 2010 10:50 PM EST up reply actions

A supplemental draft pick is supposed to be worth $2.6M. If he has a 50% chance of becoming Type B next year then in theory than means $1.3M could be deducted from what the Jays are paying him, ending up with a net cost of $1.9M.

by JaysSaskatchewan on Dec 26, 2010 10:57 PM EST up reply actions

…and who says he’s going to be a closer? Solid (save his BB/9) SU guy vs righties if anything else.

by Sir Real Ism on Dec 27, 2010 11:03 AM EST up reply actions

Meh, at least AA addressed the closer spot. I’ll give him kudos for that, its better than nothing.

Kevin Gregg Part 2? Sequels usual suck.

Dotal is the stop gap but they best be trying to find a legit closer in the org somewhere.

by The Playa on Dec 26, 2010 10:47 PM EST reply actions

Meh, he’s better then Gregg IMO. Not by a lot but a bit better.

by Parallex on Dec 26, 2010 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

If you value the draft pick

the Jays received for Gregg at $2.6M, then Gregg actually cost them -$600,000 last year ($2M salary less the $2.6M value of the draft pick). I’ve seen that value referenced a few times on Fangraphs. Most recently when we acquired Olivo

by JaysSaskatchewan on Dec 26, 2010 11:08 PM EST up reply actions

I feel exactly about this as i felt about Gregg, Buck, and Gonzalez a year ago.

given how that played out, I’ll reserve any negative remark here. I’m neither giddy nor disheartened.

I will, however, note that there is one aspect i like – he’s good enough to close if need be, yet not SO good that if one of the internal candidates (Purcey, Roenicke, Stewart – even Frasor) steps up and forces the issue, he can’t be pushed back to the set-up role.

by TamRa on Dec 26, 2010 11:16 PM EST reply actions

Zach, I believe.

One of the arms we got along with E^3 for Rolen. He is our #3 prospect as rated by this blog.

by Minor Leaguer on Dec 27, 2010 1:34 AM EST up reply actions

Um, he’s a starter now…

by xhliang on Dec 27, 2010 4:40 AM EST up reply actions

There’s been some suggestion that the Jays are considering converting Stewart into a reliever/closer.

by jabalong on Dec 27, 2010 9:44 AM EST up reply actions

Yes

He’s a starter NOW – and should be

But what happens if he’s also the best closer option and you have five other guys kicking ass in the rotation and a couple more on standby?

Does he rot in Vegas, or close in Toronto?

He’s maybe a better “prospect” than Zep (who i consider the current fifth best option for the rotation simply because Stewart needs to build up innings) but if Zep, Drabek, and the rest were all pitching well, you can’t “fire” one of them just because Stewart has done all he can do in AAA

(And I’m not even mentioning Listch who might get a chance to lose the fifth even before Zep gets his full-on shot)

I don’t THINK Stewart will be easily defaulted to the ’pen – but down the road, it might come down to a numbers game.

by TamRa on Dec 28, 2010 4:01 AM EST up reply actions

Dont mind

Im not in love with it, but ive seen enough to trust AA’s judgement

by FenixL on Dec 26, 2010 11:25 PM EST reply actions

He was the best cheap arm left, and should provide some veteran presence. I think he’ll provide some competition to our internal options. Not sure if he’s better than frasor or stewart, however.

As far as I could remember, he'll be the third "Octavio" in Blue Jays history...

…if he does sign.

One of them was a coach, Octavio Victor “Cookie” Rojas. The other was some infielder named Octavio Antonio “Tony” Fernandez.

by Minor Leaguer on Dec 27, 2010 1:39 AM EST reply actions

I dunno, it still seems like a lot of money to throw at a guy who’ll only pitch 60 innings and may not even be a closer. But I guess it’s the going rate these days. Pitchers are sooo overpaid.

On the positive side

He has been given one of the best nicknames in recent memory by some guy on twitter + DJF…

Octavio “Don’t Ask” Dotel.

I couldn’t find anything saying he wasn’t close to signing. Where did you hear it?

the octavio dotel deal isnt done for $3.5 mil or so yet w/ #bluejays. teams still involved include #pirates, #rays, others.

not done yet, doesnt mean its not happening, these are all rumours anyway. Untill there is a press release, I don’t expect we’ll know for sure.

Dotel

Please do not sign him Alex!! He’s no better than Gregg anyway. We have nobody in the org. who could fill that role. Watch and see Dotel will be like pouring gasoline on a fire.

Dotel is lights out

im so glad they signed him. plays with guts. awesome to watch

This could work out okay. If not, it’s not like we’re paying him 10mil times 5 yrs (remember BJ)
