Quick Recap: Spring Game 8, Jays and Rays
Well, our hot start offensively seems to have slowed. We only managed 5 hits and 3 walks today, but then not many of our regulars made the bus trip.
Pitchers:
- Shaun Marcum pitched 3 good innings, 1 hits, 3 strikeouts.
- Shawn Camp had a good first inning, but then had trouble in his second inning. In total he gave up 6 hits, 1 home run and 3 earned runs.
- Brad Mills threw 2 innings, 3 hits, 1 walk, 1 strikeout and 1 earned.
- Steve Register pitched a three up, three down 8th.
Batters:
- Joey Gathright was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a strike out. He's hitting .188
- Brett Wallace went 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts. Now hitting .111.
- Randy Ruiz was 0 for 3 with a strikeout, dropping his average to .529. Can't be great every day.
- David Cooper was 1 for 1 and is hitting .400. Very few at bats though. But good to see him hitting.
- Chris Lubanski went 0 for 3 with a walk and a strikeout. He is hitting .143 and I need a new irrational favorite.
- Jorge Padilla: 2 for 4. .286.
- Brad Emaus: 0 for 2 with a walk. .333.
- John McDonald: 1 for 3, a run and a strikeout. .273.
- Jose Molina: 0 for 1 with a walk. .167
- J.P. Arencibia: 0 for 1. .300
I think I'm trading my irrational support over to Arencibia. I though Lubanski was a good choice, since he was the most interesting of the lefty hitting outfielders we picked up, but he hasn't done anything since his home run in the first game this spring.

Tough spring for Wallace
I knew we should have never traded Michael Taylor.

Just for you, I looked it up
Taylor is batting .154/.154/.214, 2 singles in 13 at bats, no walks but he was hit by pitch once.
Wallace .111/.111/.111, 1 for 9, no walks.
Check

yeah that was kind of my point....niether have enough at bats to know anything
both haven’t hit in their handful of at bats.
Just checking in on Mr. Gathright.

Ball.
Marcum
sounds like he was dead on. 31 of 39 pitches for strikes – now that is pounding the strike zone.

I'm not sure what good he is going?
Has he started a foundation to help Haitian orphans?

1) The Starting 5 – Eveland vs Tallet
It will be very interesting to see how these two do in their next outings. I think Tallet had the lead, but if Dana has a good start and Brian doesn’t do as well, I think the balance might shift a little. I’m like some others on this board, figuring that Tallet is probably best in long relief. I will also add that McGowan is my preference for the starting slot, but I can’t see him not getting a longer look before debuting. Why rush his career over a handful of starts, when you can give him time to build up. That’s a no brainer, despite the management speak.
2) Molina vs Arencibia
JP has had a stellar spring so far, but I think that Molina is in the lead. They probably want JP to go down and mash for a year at triple A, then have him ready by the end of the season to take on a major role next year. I think that’s the best case, and I’m not sure if he can really do anything to win a starting slot.
3) The closer – Gregg vs Frasor
Well Gregg has given up a ton of runs so far – relatively speaking. At the moment, I think Frasor probably has the inside track, despite the Fanpost about trade scenarios. I don’t know what Downs’ numbers are, but I don’t really think that Downs is in the race, despite the speculation, unless Jason really sucks in spring.
4) The bench spots.
Well, it has to be Ruiz right now, with some serious love going to McCoy (based on the press clipping to date). Not enough bats for the others, but Dopirak probably has some cred for another spot. Apologies if I’ve messed up on the bench positions, I don’t have my head around who’s in play.
5) Snider to the minors.
It will take a miracle spring at this point for him to start with the Jays. Despite the love he gets from this site, all indications are for him to get some seasoning in the next year.
6) The rest of the bullpen is a mystery to me
I really don’t know how you judge the bullpen on spring training. You can definitely lose a spot in the rotation, but it’s pretty hard to gain one – unless they base a lot of the assessment on the sweat camp stuff. How much can you learn from a handful of innings?
7) Hope SPRINGS eternal.
The best thing about spring is that we’re tied for FIRST!
So Travis is being sent to AAA for sure

At this point it is probably better for him to go to Vegas. Cito clearly has it in for him. Let him mash down there and force AA to have him called up (and play) in a month or two.

We should have kept Millar
with EE's wrist being in question Jobau will have to start at 3B. So unless you want a OF of Wells, Gathwrong, and "Poor-mans" Reed. Gonna have to pray to jeebus that Snider breaks camp and goes north.
Way too soon to make any of those statements. If Encarnacion’s wrist is still questionable a week or more from now, then you start making your contingancy plans with Bautista at 3B. I can’t imagine that Gathright’s performance to date has him in the running for anything beyond a pinch running bench role, and even that has been challenged. If Snider doesn’t make it, as it stands, I think you’d be more likely to see Lind/Wells/Reed with Ruiz at DH or McCoy/Wells/Reed.
McCoy at third
and Bautista in right would be a better alignment, if EE isn’t able to start.
Bautista is a good gloveman in right and is basically average at third. McCoy might be okay in the outfield but I can’t imagine him being any better than Bautista, and should be at least as good as Bautista, if not better, with the glove at third.
