According to a NY Post reporter, the Jays are set to sign Cuban 21-year old shortstop Adeinis Hechavarria. Hechavarria was "unblocked" (that is, allowed to sign in the U.S.) this offseason. Apparently the Yankees were in big time on Hechavarria, but he was wary of being blocked at shortstop by the inevitable Derek Jeter extension. Hechavarria projects as an offensively-capable shortstop, but it's hard to pin it down any more than that at this point.

The other thing is that Hechavarria has already "aged" two years this offseason, since it was originally reported that he was 19.

More on this as we know more. Nothing is for sure yet.

Update: Now we're hearing the deal is for 4 years and $10 million

Wait

so is he 19 or 21?

by FenixL on Mar 14, 2010 3:49 PM EDT reply actions

that sucks…
I guess if we sign him then we’ll figure it out

Haha, better to do it after his playing days are done, lest the cutting interfere with his development.

by jabalong on Mar 14, 2010 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I would guess

closer to 21. Once he knew he had teams interested, the price would be higher if he came up closer to his real age as he would seem closer to the majors. a 19-year old you figure is years off, if at all. 21 feels like it could be a season or so away.

1 more question

with Hechavarria being compared to Jose Iglesias so much
And Jose Iglesias being signed last year does that mean Hechavarria is younger than Inglesias?

Another question

Who’s better, Sano or this guy?

Wilner has said "the jays have signed" him a few times...

wonder if he knows and cant say or if he just thinks they have… or what, but he is a stickler for terms and is usually very careful with what he says. so….

Anthopoulos is believed to have scouted Hechavarria during a trip to the Dominican Republic a few weeks ago.

As is his steadfast policy, Anthopoulos refused to answer specific questions about Hechavarria, but certainly said enough in general terms to suggest reports of an imminent deal were correct.

Somewhere was a good report over Hechavarria and Inglesias...

Remember that the author preferred Hechavarria over Inglesias…

Hechavarria should have +Power and bats for great average!

But i like the point, that the Yankees think he´s to old and not good enough if he signs with the Jays…

Interesting

I thought so too

by craig in calgary on Mar 14, 2010 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll try

Andy Hechevarria is a major prospect from the sun in Cuba. The entrails in cuba have low numbers which is why they are regular and take mutimucil to celebrate in Canada in 2007 with Enrique Iglesias. Inglesias has a firm contract to go to boston where Youkillis compains 8.2 millions times every game.

I think I got the jist of it

Craig you are a lying shit...

If we sign him there will be an articel in the NY newspapers...

“The Jays signed the 25 years old SS prospect Hechevarria for nearly 15 Mio $. He was scouted be the Yankees but couldn´t hit nor handle any position in the infield. He´s only 5`7 tall and has a broken left leg. Congrats to the Yankees for making the Jays pay him overmarket….”

Hey guys

I got this from another site regarding Hechevarria’s age; he is allegedly a few months older than Iglesias. Check out Cuban Baseball Players for clips of Hechevarria. Good website for cuban talent.

According to Rotoworld Iglesias is 19

Hech is 19 or 20 at most. Sweet. For comparisons sake: Tony Fernandez came up to the Jays when he was 21 in 1983 and was the full time SS by 1985. Because SS’s defensive work is mostly innate unlike catching which can be taught it’s not uncommon for them to come up young(ish).

by Mylegacy on Mar 15, 2010 1:58 AM EDT reply actions

if he's in on a 4-year deal

it’d be better for the Jays if he were 21 than 19

Stupid question but...

can anyone tell me how long we´d have him under controll… with arbitration… lets pretend he´ll arrive in the majors 2012… Just 4 years or 4 + arbitration…

by jaysfanfromeurope on Mar 15, 2010 7:44 AM EDT up reply actions

if it's a 4yr/10M deal

i think he makes 4M over the first four years and then the Jays can go to arbitration with him twice, right?

fail

meant 10 M over the first four years

"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"

by jessef on Mar 15, 2010 9:17 AM EDT up reply actions

I would think it would be the same rules as everyone

We’ll control him for 3 years or 2 years if he was a super 2 after he hits the majors. The contract is for the next four years so if he happen somehow to make the majors this year and was a super 2 we would have bought first 2 arbitration years. If he makes the majors in 2112, his contract would cover 2012 and 2013 then we’d have to tender him a contract again. Then he’d be arbitration eligible in 2014 and 2015. If he was a super 2, then arbitration 2013, 2014.

The contract, presuming it’s reported right, covers the years 2010 to 2013. The contract wouldn’t change if he made the majors or not.

Bob Elliott column on Hechavarria

The Toronto Sun’s Bob Elliott has a column on Hechavarria. Quotes from a few organizations’ scouts and team officials, albeit anonymous, with some disagreement on how good he is (not very good to better than Boston’s Iglesias), to what position he’ll play (one scout figures he’ll end up in the outfield) to how good a hitter he is (apparently good defensively, with offense a question mark).

by jabalong on Mar 15, 2010 11:55 PM EDT reply actions

And Dave Perkins too

The Toronto Star’s Dave Perkins has a new Hechavarria column too. For his part, he figures whether Hechavarria pans out or not, the key thing here is that this signing shows to baseball that the Jays are back as serious players in the pursuit of talent:

This signing, while orchestrated entirely by Alex Anthopoulos, clearly shows the direction the team is taking under Paul Beeston, the president then and now. Beeston wasn’t afraid to go chequebook to chequebook with the Yankees or anyone else when they needed a player Back In The Day.

While I don’t disagree with the sentiment, it’s a bit of an overstatement to suggest this is a return to the early 1990s as if the Jays were nowhere to be seen in the intervening years. We’ve had big signings – such as Canseco, Clemens, Burnett, BJ Ryan – it’s just they haven’t all worked out or fit into well into an overall development plan for the team. It’s in this respect that things are looking promising under AA.
