Quick Recap: Spring Game 15, Braves and Jays.

Braves 6 Blue Jays 7 (10 innings)

Jays came back twice in this one, tying it in the 9th, giving up a run in the top of the 10, then winning it in the bottom of the inning on a 2 run double by Michael McDade. We are 9 and 6, the 3rd best record of the AL teams this spring.

Pitching:

  • Marc Rzepczynski: didn't have the best of days. 5 innings, 6 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned. No walks and 3 strikeouts. 9 ground outs and 2 fly outs. All-in-all he got his work in, kept the ball in the strike zone and the hits on the ground so can't complain too much.
  • Shawn Camp: 1 perfect inning, 2 K.
  • Scott Downs: gave up 2 hits to start his inning but then got the next three out.
  • Kevin Gregg: 1 inning, 3 hits, a run, 2 strikeouts. No walks and no homers, be happy for small things.
  • Jason Frasor: 1 perfect inning.
  • Merkin Valdez: gave up the go ahead in the 10th, 1 hit, 1 walk, 1 K.

Batting:

  • Jose Bautista: had our first 2 hits of the game. 2 for 3. .542 for the spring. Can't complain about that.
  • Aaron Hill: 1 for 3 with his 2nd  homer of the spring. No walks for a change. .467.
  • Adam Lind: 1 for 3, a double. .261.
  • Jeremy Reed: 1 for 2. .400. Might be winning a job.
  • Vernon Wells: 1 for 3, a double and a K. .391.
  • Joey Gathright: 1 for 2. Important (well in a spring training sort of way) hit in the 10th and scored the winning run. .200.
  • Lyle Overbay: 0 for 3 with a K. .353.
  • Michael McDade. 2 for 2, both doubles, scored the run that tied the game in the 9th and drove in the winning runs in the 10th. Nice day for the young guy.
  • John Buck: 0 for 3, K. .316.
  • Randy Ruiz: 1 for 4, double and a K. .405. Is sad when you hit a double and still your average drops.
  • Travis Snider: 0 for 2 with a walk. .273.
  • Alex Gonzalez: 0 for 2. .211.
  • John McDonald: 1 for 2, drove in the tying run in the 9th with 2 outs. Would be a clutch hit if it wasn't spring training, nice to see. .333.

Bits of news from around the majors: Kerry Woods is out for 2 months with a strained back muscle. Momentary Jay Casey Fien has come full circle, the Tigers signed him to a minor league deal. He has gone from the Tigers to Red Sox to Jays to Tigers in 3 weeks. The Nationals have sent Stephan Strasburg to Double-A. Thought he might make the team.

Michael McDade

looks like he has some pop in his bat
guess he’s one to watch for in the low minors

At the very least he had a good day

So good for him, must feel pretty good even if the game doesn’t matter.

Ball.

do you think there's any rhyme or reason to these cameos

Does McDade get a look as an extra over some other minor league because he’s having a good spring or it is pretty random?

by ayjackson on Mar 20, 2010 6:20 PM EDT reply actions

i think its because he is going to start in the low minors
people in tripleA already have some sort of games going on
I think thats why
Please correct me if im wrong =)

Deja Vu

I was driving down the highway listening to Jays pull out the win in extra innings. It is just like the good old days in early nineties before the Jays hit WS stride. Bring the WS to Toronto AA!

loving the optimism
We can only hope he can be the one to bring it back

Snider up to 7

seeing some definite trends here now. snider will bat ahead of Gonzalez and back-up catcher. which is nice. i’d have him and Buck switching spots based on pitching matchup.

he would be in my top 5 …. get him as much experience as possible as soon as possible being the philosophy … race him along the learning curve … no point in putting off until tomorrow what can be accomplished today

I think the 7 hole is a nice low pressure place for him

I’d want him to move up to 5 by season’s end though.

GO JAYS!!

After switching allegiance from the Jays—opting for fan free-agency for the chance to win— I got kicked out of the Yankee community because Yankee fans said I wasn’t “arrogant” enough to fit in. So here I am.

Although the Jays have looked pretty good so far this spring, the injuries—McGowan, Morrow, Encarnacion—are already beginning to mount up. But when these guys come back… We’ll be GREAT!!

Won’t we?

The day Doc was traded, I predicted a 58-104 season for the Jays. Although the team has looked a lot better than that so far, I’m still convinced that it can find a way to achieve last place overall.

I'm not sure we'll have you back

Maybe Sir Jock can get picked up by the Royals or something for a couple of seasons, see if he can straighten it out in the minors. So, say spring training, 2013?

by dexfarkin on Mar 21, 2010 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Really? I can’t imagine jumping from team to team.

It would almost seem like a hollow victory if they were to win. Like if I switched to a team and they won it all, I don’t think I could feel as happy as a fan who had been with the team through up and downs for years.

Animate the grey matter, you dozy people...

Any cretin should realize that my temporary allegiance with NYY by opting for “fan free-agency for the chance to win” was nothing more than a parody of the poor joke that major league baseball has evolved into since the 1994 strike.

Aside to my dear friend, Dex Fartin: Dex, you’re suggesting that hideous hiatus to KC just because I always seem to manage a typo in your name. C’mon now, be a man and ’fess up.

Aside to my dear friend, Hugo: As an honorable member of the legal profession, you know only too well that the mental agony resulting from your dire threat—banning me from rooting for my favorite team—could easily cause my diseased mind irreparable damage, and that Oliver Wendell Holmes, himself a big-time baseball fan, said that that kind of cruel and unusual treatment of a fellow baseball fan was definitely “actionable”.

Aside to my dear friend, AY the Group of Seven guy: With regard to my being DFA’d, I don’t even want to know what that means.

Regarding my 58-win season prediction, well, they laughed at Super Dave, too. Didn’t they?

too bad

it means Designated for Assignment . . . so you’re going to get released, waived or traded.

Tom, I think we've hit rock bottom

a guy who thinks it’s funny to change someone’s name from ‘dexfarkin’ to ‘Dex Fartin’ thinks that our site is sorely lacking in humor.

Man, away for three hours and I get to find out I’m Bert Blyleven all of a sudden.

Well, guess I’ve got to go complain about the Hall of Fame for a while now.

Don't associate yourself with Super Dave

That’s just way too insulting to Super Dave
