Trying To Make Some Sense Of It: 3/24 Game Thread, Blue Jays at Rays
Hi everyone, hope all is well. The Jays take on the Tampa Bay Rays today and here's your lineup:
1. Jose Bautista, 3B
2. Aaron Hill, 2B
3. Jeremy Reed, LF
4. Lyle Overbay, 1B
5. Chris Lubanski, RF
6. Alex Gonzalez, SS
7. Michael McDade, DH
8. Joey Gathright, CF
9. Raul Chavez, C
Lefty hopeful Dana Eveland gets the start today and looks to continue his strong spring in hopes of securing a place on the major-league team, most likely in the bullpen.
Also, Jordan Bastian will face off against fellow mlb.com blogger Anthony DiComo (NY's teams) in a half-mile race today, with Bastian running for Jays Care. Of course all we good Jays fans are rooting for Bastian to dominate here. But what I want to know is will we get times for the race? I'm curious as in my heyday I ran a (barely) sub-2 minute half-mile and I think I could still manage that, though the mile was always my race. I want to know where I stand in the pantheon of Jays' bloggers-runnerdom!
Today's post from the fun song "Make Some Sense" by Da Novo Dahl.

yeah, it doesn't
hoping for an update, but typically if it is going to be carried, it’s up by now.

Is too bad...I have furniture to put together and thought listening to the game
while I swore would be calming
I like putting together furniture
at least, good furniture. I find working with my hands — like cooking, fixing, or building things — to be really calming.

Go Bastian!
Sounds like lots of people are getting behind him and a few are donating in addition to the Drunks bet. Maybe we could make one too? I’m good for 25
Ball.
Agreed
It’s one of the best run of the MLB associated charities. I have friends who work at Sick Kids, and one of the things they’re always saying is how entrenched the Jays are in community work. Apparently (and this could be just boasting), players semi-regularly visit the hospital and only major events ever reach the media. I think that’s fantastic, having a player sitting and talking to a kid beside his bed without a dozen cameras there.
I'm definitely in

spring is always the same...
no one wants to ride the bus…teams are supposed to take at least 4 regulars for each road game…Jays seem to be cheating on that.
I meant I don't like it because I want to see more of him :D
I can’t wait for the season to start. I want to see Snider start mashing.

For your readers who may be interested, I wrote a piece today on Brad Emaus
hechevarria
it occured to me today that this lengthy delay could only be due to the government of canada. Probably some Immigration delays.
few singles for the Jays in the first
Overbay RBI single

and
a sweet Lyle Overbay-Jeremy Reed double steal!

i almost fell off my chair when I looked at the box score and saw an Overbay steal … but now that I see it is a double steal, makes a big more sense LOL
don't look now
but Reed has more steals than Gathright this spring

I had a moment of hope...there was a TV icon by the jays game on MLB.com
but isn’t giving me the game
Eveland victimized by a seabass error in the first
gives up a run, albeit unearned.

this one by Bautista

Eveland doesn't leave much to chance in the 3rd
gets 2 Ks and a groundout for a perfect inning

tough fourth for Dana
starts out well but runs into trouble at the top of the lineup, gives up a HR and a double, for 2 runs.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
was that a double first and than the HR or a solo HR and an RBI double? (if so, was the base runner a hit or BB?)
the inning went, as far as I can tell
out, out, solo HR (Bartlett) , single (Crawford), RBI double (Zobrist), out (Longoria)

Overbay
RBI double
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
that's all for Eveland
Janssen pitches a 1-2-3 5th. Good to see him pitch a bit earlier in a game.

I can't see Cito doing so
I hear the front office people do, though.

Janssen had 2Ks and a groundout, by the way
obviously a miniscule sample size, but he has 5 Ks (and one walk) over 5 spring innings thusfar. Not to mention over 2.5 groundouts for each one in the air.

Seabass solo HR

Accardo gives up
Bartlett’s second HR of the game

mayorson
Is probably Manny Mayorson who was in AA New Hampshire for a few years, then I believe released or traded. He is an infielder utilityman and made a return to NH near the end of last season, not sure how TOR acquired him.

great guy
Always a smile on his face but I don’t think he will be any more than a minor league role player until he calls it quits. He could do it for a few more years though. Not a prospect.

depends
Most guys make something like 30-40 I believe plus they get a per diem and stuff. Maybe less in hiA and more in AAA? Plus the non top prospect guys rent apts like 4-6 together and to save money and they get furniture discounted and stuff.

the tough thing, as I understand
is that with per diem, hotels on the road, and host families, they do okay during the season but the offseason makes things tough and a lot of them work other jobs.
Don’t forget that the high draftees get signing bonuses that can be sizeable so some minor leaguers are immediately doing very well. But not all, obviously.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
that seems rough. If you know you are not going to make it to MLB, it makes you wonder why folks would keep at it.
or
Its got to be hard to accept. I don’t know how id give up on a dream. Plus its a rush to be in front of a crowd every day and get to play with some great guys. Look at Todd Donovan…career minor leaguer just retired at 31. But last year he took both John Smoltz and maybe Dice-K yard. Now he’s a scout.

yeah
We take the friendly guys out for dinner or they come up to our lake house on an off day and we cook them a bbq and whatnot. Its a nice thing for them, especially the ones who are alone or their s/o is somewhere else. They give us signed stuff and tickets to road games toowhich is nice and shows they appreciate it.

Crabbe played a few games in San Diego in 2008 and Seattle in 2009
hit well in a handful of at bats.
Think 2b version of Mike McCoy but less of threat on the bases. Makes a lot of contact, draws a lot of walks, hits for next to no power (even less than McCoy), can defend and has played some SS/3b and OF in this minor league career but mainly a 2b.
Actually just now looking up the #s, minor league career looks a LOT like McCoy:
MM: 858games .270-.369-.360 729ops 172sb, 54cs
CC: 886games .269-.364-.372 736ops 164sb, 74cs
If McCoy doesn’t make the team Vegas probably has and interesting middle infield w/ Crabbe at 2b and McCoy at SS. Both can defend, run, swipe a bag here and there and play all over the diamond.
Purcey had an okay inning
