Quick Recap: Spring Game 1
Pitchers are supposed to be ahead of the batters early in the spring but 13 runs were scored this game.
Our losing pitcher was Willie Collazo, who gave up 2 runs off 4 hits in the 9th. Ricky Romero pitched the first 2 innings and gave up a run on a home run and struck out one. Dana Eveland went 2, gave up 2 hits, 2 walks and an unearned run. Josh Roenicke pitched 1.2 innings, gave up 2 hits, 3 walks and a run. If he wants to make the team he can't be walking 3 guys. Zechry Zinicola went 1.1 giving up 2 hits and struck out 1. And Merkin Valdez pitched the 8th, gave up 3 hits and 2 runs, 1 earned.
Offensively Chris Lubanski had a three run homer. Randy Ruiz went 2 for 3. Aaron Hill took 2 walks in 2 plate appearances. Mike McCoy went 2 for 2 with a double. Vernon Wells was 1 for 2 and scored our first run of the spring. Travis Snider went 0 for 2 with 2 strikeouts.
Hill and Jose Bautista pulled off a double steal in the first inning. It didn't pay off as Lind and Wells struck out and Overbay ground out.
We made 3 errors in the field: Jarrett Hoffpauir, Raul Chavez and Brad Emaus had one each.
Can't read much into one game. I'm sure we'll hear from Cito on Snider's strikeouts. Lubanski takes a big step towards becoming my irrational favorite of the spring.
Tomorrow Scrabble, Brett Cecil and Kyle Drabek are scheduled to pitch.

I am sure that Cito will use Moonraker’s 2 strike outs as irrational confirmation that he’s not ready to be a full time major leaguer. If Snider doesn’t make this team the way that its apparently envisioned to be constructed, it will be an absolute disgrace. He’s a huge part of the future and fully deserves that chance to learn at the major league level for a full season, especially considering the sad sack state of the team. God, I hope that neither Bautista or Gathraight are here when (if?) the Jays start to contend, and as such don’t think that there is any reason why either of them should be taking away appearances from Snider. I hope that what Cito’s getting at by saying that he might not make the team is just trying to get him fired up, and not confirmation of his inability to utilize young players (remember John Olerud/ Shawn Green anyone?).
I don't know, after reading Bastian's newest blog, Snider's swing's were apparently terrible,
maybe he could use time in AAA, it’s not like the Jays are going to compete this year either way.
quick note, I'm intrigued by Zach Zinicola, could be usefull rule 5 pick up, those are getting
rarer and rarer it seems
i'm going to go ahead and call
Driver’s seat on the Lubanski bandwagon

Still with "Scrabble"?
Even though he’s stated he doesn’t mind any of the nicknames except that one? Do we hate him or something?
And what’s with Bastian giving props to McLeod for “the Big Lubanski”?? He was coined that about five minutes after signing with the Jays, and was probably coined that five minutes after “Lebowski” was released to theatres by his schoolmates.
the only time I've seen an interview where he has mentioned it
is here and he doesn’t say a thing about liking or disliking. And since Jordan is the one that talked to him about it and uses it, I’m not going to worry.
bastian asked him about it on the record
And he didn’t at all support nhfishercat’s story

poor nlfishercat
gets thrown under the bus by star-struck bloggers!
(I kid, I kid)
defence poblems
the hitting isn’t bad coming into the year but the pitching and the defense are uncertained.
When you have 3 or 4 guys in the order
Who if they got on base at a .300 clip it would be some sort of miracle, there is no chance the offense will be very good.
Halladay
I’m hoping to catch Phillies SG against the Yankees tomorrow.
gotta be interesting.
Don’t get too excited, remember it is just Spring training so Doc will most likely just do 2 innings, and to top it off If I remember correctly last year in his first outing he just through the same pitch over and over again just to get a feel for it and started to throw more varieties closer to the start of the season.

The Big Lubanski
Nice to see Lubanski take one downtown.
Tom, are you sure that it’s the pitchers who are ahead early on? I understood that it was the hitters, mainly because the pitchers can’t consistently spot their pitches from the git-go.
The double steal in the first inning was great stuff. But putting two runners in scoring position? Isn’t that when most of the Jays don’t hit a buck-ninety? Too much like pressure.
Cito will do most anything to shield his talented young multi-millionaires from undue pressure. So maybe he should have left the runners at first and second, and then flashed the home run sign to Lindsy, Wellsy and Baysy. Such a simple game.
They change the story depending on who is doing well...
If the hitters hit early they say the hitters are ahead.
Actually, really the line is the pitchers are ahead at the start of spring, they come to camp earlier. Batting is timing and the timing takes a few swings to get again.
Burns: You, Strawberry, hit a home run!
Strawberry: Okay, skip.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
