Three Blue Jays Sent to Minors
The Jays optioned three to their minor league camp this afternoon. Jeremy Reed, David Purcey and Jesse Carlson. Carlson is a surprise to me, Cito used him a bunch last year. Reed had a great spring and I thought had a chance to make the team, Purcey well, we knew that was going to happen.
It means that Mike McCoy will be making the team, barring a last minute pickup. And I'd imagine that Dana Eveland will be making the team, either as a reliever or taking Tallet's rotation spot, moving Tallet to the pen. One of those two would have to be the second lefty in the pen, behind Downs.
So the last position spot to be decided would be backup catcher. There are still a few cuts left to be made among the pitchers.

Carlson
Must still be experiencing some soreness or something. Otherwise, I figured him for a lock.
Good chance
There’s too many teams looking for quality relief arms to think that someone won’t put forward a decent offer for someone in the bullpen. Carrying Merkin as a single inning, sort of pseudo-League role would make a lot of sense.
I was gambling on Reed too
For my fantasy team.
Carlson is very surprising.
Also, the O’s picked up Gathright it seems.
Ball.
Q for DA
So where are we at with Purcey now? He seems to be developing into a good RP yes? Is he on track for a full time role in 2010/11 if there are trades / FA departures etc?
I doubt he's on track for a job unless he shows something.
He’s going to have to get guys out with some regularity before they start considering him for anything. He had, what, 3 or 4 relief appearances this spring? We’ll see.
i really wonder if he won’t still be starting in Vegas. Even with more of a focus on 2 or 3 main offerings.
Anyone surprised Reed accepted to go to Vegas?
With the spring Jeremy Reed had and that he’s been at the big league level for awhile, I’m kind of surprised that he accepted to go to the minors. Don’t think it’s a bad move for him, as a place could certainly open up on the Jays, but it just seems to me that he might have been able to grab a spot on another team now if he hadn’t accepted, although who’s to say really.
Unless he knows that JoBau is going to flame out spectacularly as the every day lead off RF, in which case he is perfectly positioned to be called up.
You know, I was wondering to myself this AM, if the option to play in Vegas holds appeal to some players. Afterall, if you are going to do a stint in AAA, who would not want it to be in sin city? In the off days and downtime, it is like a free vacation. See the shows, play some black jack, catch a fight etc … Perhaps there is some advantage to having an AAA affiliate in Vegas if it improves the team’s ability to hold onto AAA talent. Maybe the Jays should think twice before contemplating relocating its AAA affiliate.

I doubt that
Reed said the exact opposite

true and some might be equally disenchanted by going to Vegas

I don't know if you've spent much time there not on vacation
but I tried a three-week case there and it’s actually not a fun place to be when you are trying to focus and get work done, particularly after a couple of days when it all gets old. I would describe it as best in small doses. I did enjoy running at 5 am on the strip, which was sort of bizarrely awesome.
And you also have to factor in the increased likelihood of players getting into trouble. You are talking about guys in their 20s, and some will be underage. My preference would actually be to move the AAA team to Montreal or somewhere else in Canada, but that doesn’t seem likely, unfortunately.

interesting moves
Carlson…I suspect the move is temporary, to build up innings, unless they have other plans for him. Purcey – a situation where a young guy needs to develop some confidence & start getting people out on a consistent basis, starting or relieving. Reed – outfield insurance/experience in AAA for now. Maybe he rakes down there & we can either use him later or deal for someone else…By the way, I can’t decide Twitterated or Twitched. Both work for me.
