Quick Recap: Spring Game 3
We also won the 'B' game 3-2.. Can't see a box score from the game but Cito said Mills pitched well. Chad Jenkins went 2 innings, 1 hits, 1 walk, 1 K. Zach Stewart got the save. Kyle Phillips was 3 for 3.
missed one....Cooper hit a HR.
In the A game:
Our pitchers:
- Brandon Morrow: 2 innings, no hits, 1 BB, 2K. He threw 20 pitches in the first inning but only 10 in the second. Sounded very good.
- Lance Broadway: 2 innings, 3 hits, 1 K and 1 run.
- David Purcey: 2 innings, 7 hits, no walks, 1 K and 3 earned. Not a good day for Purcey.
- Jesse Carlson: 1 inning, 3 hits, 1 walk, 3 earned. A bad showing.
- Casey Janssen: 1 perfect inning, 1 K.
- Jeremy Accardo: 1 inning, 2 hits, 1 walk, 1 K and 2 earned runs.
Batters, a good day for a lot of guys:
- Jose Bautista: 3 for 3, 2 doubles and a homer, 3 runs, 3 RBI. Great job.
- Aaron Hill: 1 for 1, 2 walks, 1 run.
- Randy Ruiz: 2 for 2, 1 run.
- Vernon Wells: 1 for 3, 1 RBI.
- Jeremy Reed: 1 for 1, 1 BB, 2 runs, 1 RBI.
- Lyle Overbay: 1 for 2, a double, 1 BB, 1 run, 3 RBI.
- Brad Emaus: 2 for 2, both doubles, 1 BB, 1 run, 1 RBI, 1 SB.
- Chris Lubanski: 0 for 3, maybe we picked the wrong horse.
- Travis Snider: 0 for 2, 2 K. Also had 2 assists from the outfield.

only one inning
but nice to see Janssen show well. If he can return to pre-injury form, he could be a very useful arm for us.

Reed
seems to be an on base machine. He supposed to be a speedy guy too. Maybe him and Bautista will split the leadoff/RF slot. Or Bautista can move to 3rd and platoon with E5 and have Reed/Snider in RF.
I´m not sure that Snider will make it north...
Good thing is, we´ve had only 3 games yet….
but Snider seems to strike out consistantly against lefties! Maybe we should him start against every lefty running around in AAA in April and May….
So after 3 games:
*we had an ok outing for Ricky, a good one for Morrow and an impressive one for Scrabble… looks like our starting pitchers can´t wait to start the new season.
*maybe lead-off spot won´t be our biggest problem
*we gonna go into new season without a SS who can hit
*Ruiz is still hitting
*Casey can give us another option in the pen
*we prefer to walk alot this spring
*Purcey didn´t get better in the new year
*Lind needs to start hitting
*Hill will have a great season
*still don´t understand why we signed Johnny Mac

But i´m pretty sure with 2 things….

cause he's had a long career and hasn't hit yet?
his career numbers are .247/.294/.395. He’s 33 now, I’m not expecting him to suddenly start hitting at this age.
Yeah in 2007 he had his best season at a 99 OPS+, so he made it all the way to average in his career year
Then missed the whole next year after knee surgery. Last year his OPS+ was 64. Bad knee, our turf, 33 years old, if he beats his career OPS+ of 78 I’d be surprised.
Average by league standards is above average by shortstop standards
but yes, Gonzalez will be terrible.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
i'm a hopeless optimist. We could see .260/.320/.400, 10+ HR
not the end of the world in thr 9 hole. he plays great defence
Purcey a reliever?
I think Purcey as a Reliever with his 90-94 mph with a good second offering is best case scenario now, I wish they would test out come this season.
There was a fight about this in another thread. If he doesn’t command as a starter… tough to be a middle reliever….
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
his fastball is too good, there not a lot of lefties who touch 95 and I don’t think that 2008 season in the minors was a fluke
Above average control
Horrible command.
Someone please tell him you can’t paint corners like Greg Maddux when you throw strikes like Tom Glavine.
Emaus?
What is with Emaus and his superb springs and then choking in the minors?
I wonder if Emaus is the type of guy that does better with tougher competition? He did last spring and in winter ball a year ago. Maybe there’s something there.
I don’t think Emaus choked last year, his babip was very low suggesting he quite possibly just had some real bad luck. Just like the prior year, he barely struck out and drew a good amount of walks. His power did dip a bit, but wasn’t horrible for a 2bman. I think he could have a big bounce back year if he continues to make a lot of contact. He makes enough contact to hit .280-.300 every year. The question is more around his power potential and even more so, his glove.
