I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down: 3/8 Preview and Thread, Jays at Astros

The Jays, fresh off a win propelled by long balls by the triumvirate of Wells, Ruiz, and Bautista, take on the Houston Astros this afternoon in Kissimmee.  Today's lineup, which looks to be a fun one:

Joey Gathright, LF

Jarrett Hoffpauir, 3B

J.P. Arencibia, C

Lyle Overbay, 1B

Brad Emaus, 2B

Brett Wallace, DH

Jorge Padilla, CF

Travis Snider, RF

Johnny McDonald, SS

Pretty fun to see Snider, Wallace, Emaus, and Arencibia all in the same lineup, no?  In light of our conversation yesterday, I find it very interesting to see how this lineup is constructed.

Making the start today for the Jays will be southpaw Ricky Romero, who is expected to throw three frames.  Romero will be followed by, things permitting, some combination of fellow lefty Dana Eveland, Chad Jenkins, Zach Stewart, Merkin Valdez, Zechry Zinacola, and Willie Collazo (no way all of them get into the game, unless Romero and Eveland both fall flat on their faces.

In other news, Dustin McGowan is set to throw two simulated innings tomorrow, and Brett Cecil will work a bullpen session today and pitch in a "B" game on Wednesday.

According to mlb.com, there will be an audio feed of the game courtesy of Houston's announcers.

Travis back up to 8th

Such a high point for him isn’t it?

Ball.

Yeah, that's why I said "back up to"

Silly Tom. He’s just bouncing around at the bottom of the order, he might even hit 7th!

it's interesting that he's behind the other guys

with no major-league time

I'm always wondering how

Cito decides which player needs the tough love and which one needs the ‘ok you get the job no matter what’. I mean, he may have good reasons, I’d be curious what they are.

Lind, he gets the team to call up as soon as he gets the manager job and say ’he’s in the lineup every day’. Snider, get the ‘has to earn his spot’.

by Tom Dakers on Mar 8, 2010 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it relates to Snider’s listening to instruction. He said they wanted him to adjust his swing last year and he refused. Snider said himself people tried to help him and he didn’t listen. If you were managing someone (baseball or otherwise) and they didn’t listen to your advice how would you react? It’s quite possible Cito is saying go ahead, prove you’re right kid. He’s playing him so he’s giving Travis a shot to prove him wrong, but he’s not exactly going to promote the idea that players shouldn’t listen to the manager. Agree with Cito or disagree, players need to open to suggestion from the coaches. That’s why they are there.

by jayjay on Mar 8, 2010 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

this and he’s probably hitting other guys higher b/c it doesn’t really matter where they hit b/c they have no chance to make the club. He’s likely just hitting Snider where he’s likely to hit to start the year. So I wouldn’t read as much into Wallace and JPs spots. Heck, Emaus is ahead of Wallace but he’s not exactly the bigger piece of the future there.

by jayjay on Mar 8, 2010 12:45 PM EST up reply actions

I could understand that for last year

But for the sound of things, he’s started to listen to his coaches this year, changing his stance and such. So why keep punishing him?

Ball.

by Casusby on Mar 8, 2010 12:45 PM EST up reply actions

On an unrelated but still interesting note, I think Chapman will be pitching for the Reds today.

by aagoodfella on Mar 8, 2010 12:32 PM EST reply actions

Go Arencibia!
What does Snider have to do to please management?

by Joey P on Mar 8, 2010 12:43 PM EST reply actions

Do we really need to see Eveland and Collazo pitch? We all know Cit has his mind made up anyways, lets just pitch Jenkins and Stewart for the heck of it and let Cito tell the others that he doesn’t like them anyways.

by Joey P on Mar 8, 2010 12:46 PM EST reply actions

oh got to have everyone pitch....

Jenkins and Stewart will get their chances.

by Tom Dakers on Mar 8, 2010 12:51 PM EST up reply actions

Eveland had a bad year last year

but is still pretty young and was good two years ago. I’d take him in the rotation over Tallet, to be honest.

sure

I’m definitely not saying just hand him a rotation job. He has to show he can control the strike zone decently this spring, for one thing.

by hugo on Mar 8, 2010 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

I am cautiously optimistic

the HRs are great but the real tell will be seeing how his approach holds up over a decent sample size. I don’t expect him to become a walk machine, but if he is more comfortable and seeing the ball better he may start making better contact and if he is able to pick up breaking pitches better it could make a big difference.

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman

by hugo on Mar 8, 2010 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

Way too early to tell. He’s a typical swing for the fences guy, he hits HRs in bunches. Just look at last season, he didn’t hit any in April (67ab) or June (93ab) but had 8 in May (111ab) and another 8 in August (113ab).

by jayjay on Mar 8, 2010 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

Oh wouldn't say that yet....

Jason Lane hit a bunch of homers last year. But I’d love JP to make the team. He needs to get established before D’arnaud gets up to Toronto.

by Tom Dakers on Mar 8, 2010 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

it would be a nice surprise

by aagoodfella on Mar 8, 2010 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

oh heck, with D'araud coming

let him up now worry about arbitration in a couple of years.

by Tom Dakers on Mar 8, 2010 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

I agree, if arb gets too steep, you can just trade him knowing D’aurnaud is around

by Joey P on Mar 8, 2010 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

I would think it all but impossible for JPA to crack the lineup from the start of the season. He likely has to prove he can sustain that kind of performance. At best, he can get on the Jays’ radar and if he keeps ripping for the next couple of months in AAA, then maybe he gets a mid-season call-up. But even if that happened, it would be a wonderful surprise for the Jays. This is all speculation of course.

by aagoodfella on Mar 8, 2010 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know that's it's impossible...

it isn’t like the Jays have Johnny Bench infront of him, but isn’t likely

by Tom Dakers on Mar 8, 2010 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

I like the way the Houston announcers casually dismissed todays lineup as all non-starters, except maybe Overbay

Hope Snider was not listening.

by aagoodfella on Mar 8, 2010 1:15 PM EST reply actions

Score?

How many HR’s has JoBa hit? Oh he’s not playing…that being said the way he’s playing he can go 3 for 4 from the bench.
