Interest in Frasor...

Just looking on MLBTR site I've seen that the Cubs (setup man Angel Guzman gone to TJ surgery) and the Twins (Joe Nathan potentially lost to TJ surgery) are possibly interested in Jason Frasor's services.

What type of return do you think the Jays should be looking for in exchange for Frasor?  If there are two teams in need, right now might be the best time to think about moving Frasor (or Scott Downs)...

The way we stockpile shortstops around here we would go for 3 or 4 of them.

Well we tried the no offense huddle, why not give the no huddle offense a go?!!

If and when Nathan does go our for the year

Frasor would be a great fit in Minny.

Targets?

I just looked up the Cubs 20 prospects here are some guys that could/should be of great interest for the Jays in a Frasor deal:

2) Josh Vitters, 3B, Grade B+: Borderline B. A very tough player to grade. I really hate the low walk rate, but the strikeout rate is also low and he’s still very young at age 20. I’ll cut him some slack as a result.

3) Brett Jackson, OF, Grade B: Awesome tools stand out, but I’m still concerned about his contact rate and how that will work at higher levels.

6) Hak-Ju Lee, SS, Grade B: Fast, gets on base, should hit for average. His glove is good enough that the Cubs have mentioned moving Castro to second base, which tells you something about Lee since Castro has a potentially great glove.

Considering...

The Dodgers gave up 3B prospect Josh Bell for George Sherrill last year it might not be out of the question.

But if the Cubs wanted Frasor and Mills for any of those 3 I wouldn’t turn it down

The Dodgers gave up

Carlos Santana for Casey Blake. Minny and the Cubs have a need so it’s possible to get a top 5 prospect at a position like C. Santana just happens to the Indians’ best prospect now… I would say Frasor is worth more then Sherrill due to contract status and it being the beginning of the year.

Thats because the Dodgers already have a C.

His name is Russell Martin, a very underrated C, that can hit, field, and run the bases. Now C. Santana is projected to be a great hitter, his fielding and game-calling abilities remains to be seen. No one is blocking Starlin Castro in the Cub’s system. Ryan Theriot is a nice little player, but his production in minute in terms of what Castro can bring to the table.

um, that's utterly absurd

“hmmm, we have this amazing prospect, but Russell Martin (who OPSed .680 last year) is already playing catcher for us. Let’s trade our best catching prospect for Casey Blake.”

As if that weren’t absurd enough, Martin is due to be a free agent before Santana will even be ready for the majors.

except the Blake/Santana swap didn't happen last year

Martin OPS .781 in 08, where they got Casey Blake to solidify their line up for a post season run. And while a .680 OBP is what it is, you have to consider playing 150 games at the most back-breaking position every year will begin to break you down.

While Santana will be a few notches above Martin(, his D game will never be as good as Martin who throws out 33% of base-stealers. His bat is ready, but his D will probably be less than average at the position.. Despite that, Santana could be in the majors as early as mid-2010.

Martin is eligible in 2012, so there's a bit of overlap

but isn’t that missing the point? You don’t trade a catching prospect as good as Santana for Casey Blake just because you already have a catcher. Even if the Dodgers wanted to keep Martin, and Martin wanted to stay, they should have gotten a lot more for Santana, and it’s not like Santana was so close to the majors that they had to move him when they did. It was a substantial mistake on their part.

Santana wasn’t a stud prospect when they traded him. Heck, he was BARELY a catcher! He was in his 2nd year (and the first wasn’t even a full year) of being converted into a catcher, before that season he had not hit very well, and while he was raking the ball at the time there was substantial questions behind how much of it was league/age/park b/c it was in the Cally league (Cally and PCL are hitters heavens) and he was already 22 which is not exactly young for A+. Basically, the Dodgers traded a high-risk project for Casey Blake. And everything so far points to the Indians having hit the jackpot. That would be much, much different than the Indians trading him today.

but that's my real point

there was a suggestion that the deal was defensible because Martin was blocking Santana. That just doesn’t make sense. If the deal was defensible, it’s because no one could have predicted how Santana would pan out (since LA knew what they were getting in Blake), not because of Martin.

agreed, I just don’t think anyone clearly stated where Santana was at the time of that deal. The argument suggests that Santana was a good prospect being blocked so they dealt him … when the fact is, as you stated, you wouldn’t trade him just b/c of Russ Martin BUT he also wasn’t the prospect he is now at that time.

Starlin Castro

There is no reason why the jays cant get starlin castro from the cubs. All they have to do is trade frasor and one of their top 3 SS prospects (pierre, jackson, pastornicky). Remember, Frasor is a type B free agent and only 2 points away from being a type A. So the Cubs could get a year out of Frasor and 3 prospects (if Frasor has a good year) for Starlin Castro. Good deal for both teams.

by JaysFan101 on Mar 11, 2010 9:50 AM EST reply actions

Well, Starlin Castro is a top prospect

ranked 16th by Baseball America, and 12th by Keith Law of Scouts Inc. Which means it will likely take more than Frasor + a SS prospect to land Castro. So maybe a package of Frasor + one of our top 5 pitching prospects(not Drabek or Chefzynski), and a SS prospect. We could also wait for Derrek Lee to get injured again like he does every year and throw in Overpaid.

Frasor for a "can't-miss" prospect? Excellent!

Yes! Only SB Nation participants have the baseball smarts to appreciate the far-reaching benefits of Alex Anthopoulos’ exciting new lose-to-win strategy.

It’s so simple that most other teams have entirely overlooked the inherent genius of our program: Trade any Blue Jay who can actually play at the major league level for can’t-miss prospects.

These pimply faced adolescents will dominate the American League East eight to ten years down the road. Then we will be laughing back at the same fans of other teams who are laughing at us now. Brilliant!
