Jays Sign Adam Lind to Four Year Deal

Here is the press release:

BLUE JAYS SIGN ADAM LIND

TO LONG TERM CONTRACT

The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have signed outfielder ADAM LIND to a four year contract for the 2010 through 2013 seasons with club options for the 2014, 2015 & 2016 seasons. The deal has a total value of $18 million dollars (US) over the four years.

LIND, 26, hit .305 during the 2009 season with 35 home runs and led the club with 46 doubles and 114 RBI. The 6-1, 215 lb. resident of Anderson, Indiana was honoured following the 2009 season being named both a Silver Slugger Award winner and recipient of the Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter Award.

Since being selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the third round of the 2004 first year player draft, LIND has appeared in 346 games over four seasons for Toronto posting a .287 average with 84 doubles, 57 home runs and 208 RBI.

Me Back: That wasn't the news we were expecting but it is great to hear.

Update:

As noted in the comments thread, Lind will get :

$400 K with a $600 K bonus in 2110

$5 million a year from 2011-2013.

With club options for 3 years:

$7 million for 2014, $2 million buyout.

$7.5 million for 2015, $1 million buyout.

$8 million for 2016, $500 K buyout.

Total if all the options are picked up is $38.5 million. So a good deal for the Jays and good money for Lind. Everyone should be happy.

Good deal for AA

Adam Lind, to me, sounds like the kind of guy that would tell his agent: “Take the deal now, before they send me back to AAA”.

Great Freaking Job
Awsome signing, 5 million a year (4.5 to be exact) for a guy mashing 30+ homers a year.

All from Bastian
Lind will earn $400K this year with a $600K bonus. Will earn $5m in each of 2011-13 seasons. $2m buyout for ’14 makes it $18m guaranteed.
Club options are on a year by year basis in the offseasons before the 2014, 2015, 2016 seasons.
Lind would’ve been a free agent after the 2013 season.

now Lind can buy that house he had his eye on ! Good for the ailing real estate market.

It is a good deal. The options are especially good. The Jays keep their 4-year rule intact with potential for upside and the buyout is not too severe if things blow up for some reason.

Moreover, you have to believe our man Snider is looking at that and thinking “I want in on that action!”.

Even Ruiz can get a little taste if he steadily mashes.

From Bastian
Lind’s contract: 2014 – $7 mil or $2 mil buyout, 2015 – $7.5 mil or $1 mil buyout, 2016 – $8 mil or $500K buyout

7 years at 38.5 mil

is a bargain. Basically Lind gets more guaranteed money in place for a better deal for the Jays. There’s no way this one can hurt imo even if Lind regresses. Such a team friendly deal. Good job AA.

Maybe

this was partly why we didn’t ask him to play more outfield last year. Haha now we should have no reservation about letting him prove he can field with such a team friendly contract in place.

FWIW I was

quite impressed with Anthopolous when he was being interviewed on TV. He comes across as the anti-Ricciardi (and that’s a very good thing).

Great job AA

That is a great deal for the future of the Jays. Very good price.

Fair for both sides

I wouldn’t call it a steal for the Jays – don’t want Lind thinking he’s been ripped off. I think it’s fair with risk on both sides. Lind gets a whack of guaranteed money even though he’s only had one big season. On the flip side, if he continues to produce as he’s capable of, the Jays get to have him locked in at what ought to be good value for them over many years. I’m very happy that it’s not longer than four years guaranteed with club options after that.

very good deal

nice work AA.

wells affect

I wonder if Lind looks at Vernon and tells his agent “I don’t need to set the market for that type of pressure” and tells his agent to get a deal done this year that carries him through the next seven

by ayjackson on Apr 4, 2010 11:31 AM EDT reply actions

Lind didn’t have the same sort of leverage that Wells would have had at the time, not to mention the marketplace is a very different place.

Now that being said it could very well be the case that Lind said Man I don’t need that aggravation, but at the same time I am sure if that amount of money was put in front of him he would sign just like anyone else.

well if it is 23 million a year compared to 20 million a year....

might be different, but since Lind is topping out at 8 million, I’m sure he wouldn’t have said no to 23 million

by Tom Dakers on Apr 4, 2010 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

i'm confused,

this doesn’t seem relevant to my point….Lind was never considering the $18m per year vernon got, let alone the $23m you referenced. I’m just saying that Lind could have looked at Vernon and decided not to push for top dollar (in relation to his value).

by ayjackson on Apr 4, 2010 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

it's possible, but it's very hard to compare the situations

Wells was a year from what looked like a huge free agency payday and played an elite defensive position very well. Lind is years away from making silly money and has mostly been a DH, a position that typically doesn’t command big, multi-year deals.

you think if Vernon had signed for $20 mil/year

he wouldn’t have the same aggravation?

semantics

I can’t imagine Lind made a concerted effort to sign for less, it’s not like the deal was that team-friendly. As brewerm referenced in the fangraphs piece at http://www.bluebirdbanter.com/2010/4/4/1404458/fangraphs-on-adam-lind-deal-aa-ftw, the Jays had a lot of leverage here.
