Pleased to Meet Me: Community Census!

Hi everyone.  So, last season right around opening day we did an intro post where everyone in the community had the opportunity to introduce him or herself.  It worked out well so we thought we'd do the same this season.  And the post also functions to introduce our newest Bluebird Banter overlord, JohnnyG.  Obviously you all know Johnny from his pithy comments and now-famous Blue Jay Jeopardy! fanpost.  He'll be helping us out with the game threads and other things this season.  Without further adeiu:

Name: John Goldsworthy Aka Johnny G. Terribly Creative I know.
Location: London, Ontario
Favourite Current Jay: Aaron Hill
Favourite All-Time Jay: Alomar with Gruber coming in a close second
Favourite Non-Jay Player: *sigh* Halladay
Stepping to the Plate/Coming out of the bullpen Music: Bit of a problem here. Not sure. Most of music doesn't work for this type of thing.... something fast and loud. Some Linkin Park maybe.
When Not Bluebird Bantering, I am: Working, Gaming (gotta love MLB 10 the show on PS3 but I am also playing a lot of Dragon Age and Modern Warfare 2). Enjoy reading too. By the time this post goes up I imagine I will be reading Dirk's book.
Favourite Baseball Movie: Hmmm... Tough. Gotta love Major League.... Bull Durham... Field of Dreams.... you know I am not sure I can pick just one.
Major Leaguer My Little League Career Most Resembled: Last year I said I wasn't good enough.... but really I think it is like John MacDonald with slightly less glove. I was always much better in the field then at the plate but I was never Johnny Mac good.

The all-time record for a player being hit by a pitch is held by Hughie Jennings, who was hit by 287 pitches between 1891 and 1903. The modern-day record is held by Craig Biggio of the Houston Astros, who had 285 as of the end of the 2007 season when he retired.

Major Leaguer My Little League Career Most Resembled: Is there a major leaguer that never held a baseball in his life? (Now, Tom! You know that Kevin Millar did handle a ball or two! That’s not fair…) No? so no one, I guess. I come from a country where the concept of Baseball is as foreign as the concept of Hockey would be in Africa. (To tell you the truth, the concept of Hockey is even more foreign where I come from…)

Favourite non-Jay: Doc for obvious reasons. Pujols because of how good a person he is outside of being the most feared hitter in baseball.

Intro Music: Something loud – chorus from Rammstein’s “Zwitter”, then from “Reise, Reise”. Then something with a good beat – maybe Deadmau5’s “Ghosts ’N Stuff” or Thomas Ulstrup’s “Snap Back”. And, if there’s a 5th plate appearance – Disturbed’s “Haunted”.
When not Bluebird Bantering: School for 8 months. Work all year. Work sometimes as a bylaw officer, other times as a sports league scheduler/organizer at school.

Don't have much choice...

I got hooked with the Jays in my 2001 stint in Alberta. That’s the only thing on TV worth watching… You used to get there ALL the Jays’ games…

Now I’m in TO. I’m attending games at the skydome, but you have to pay to see some of the games on TV. So I’d rather pay for a seat in the 500s, and spare my wife the agony…

Favourite Baseball Movie: Haven’t seen any, I think. I like sports and I like movies but I do not like sports movies.
Major Leaguer My Little League Career Most Resembled: we didn’t play baseball, but when we played softball I was a defensive-oriented catcher who never hit for power but sometimes got hits against abysmal defenses and then proceeded to steal base after base because the other catchers were often even more useless than their infielders. Really, even the little league equivalent of Jose Molina doesn’t come close to the horror I was at the plate.

Name: Jabalong
Location: Hong Kong, China
Favourite Current Jay: Having watched only a half dozen games in the past 10 years since leaving Canada, the current players are mostly just names and stats for me – albeit ones I still manage to feel surprisingly strongly about. If I had to pick one, I’d say Aaron Hill.
Favourite All-Time Jay: Anyone and everyone from the 1987 Jays – the team that first broke my heart and who I’ve always loved the most…even more than the World Series-winning teams I saw up close and personal working for the team (first as a “runner” in 1988 and 1989, then in the ticket office from 1990 through 1994).
Favourite Non-Jay Player: Fred McGriff. Okay, this is a bit of a cheat, as he’s really my favourite Jay. He was my first breakout player, who for a short time felt like he was my little secret…well, okay Toronto’s little secret (I remember telling a Phillies fan in 1988 that this kid was going to be one of the best…countered with his love of Ricky Jordan – I came out on top of that one nicely). McGriff went on to play most of his career elsewhere, but always remained my favourite player and now Hall of Fame debate obsession (along with long-suffering Bert Blyleven). Speaking of legendary hurlers, if McGriff doesn’t count as a non-Jay, which he really shouldn’t, then my pick would be Nolan Ryan. Sitting in the Press Box at Exhibition Stadium on April 23rd 1989, watched him nearly no-hit the Jays, quietly rooting for him until Nelson Liriano broke it up with two outs in the ninth.
Stepping to the Plate/Coming out of the bullpen Music: AC/DC’s Hell’s Bells. Loved it when they played it for George Bell, another personal favourite, and if I was playing I’d want that song as a tip of my cap to him.
When Not Bluebird Bantering, I am: Sleeping in, lounging around, working out and wondering why I’m still in Asia (though not complaining during the six months a year when the weather in Canada barely supports life).
Favourite Baseball Movie: My head says Field of Dreams, but my heart still aches for The Natural and what should have been for Roy Hobbs. And then there’s also the screaming little 1970s kid in me who says The Bad News Bears (and its sequels, sure why not – but probably not the TV show, though it’s all a bit of a haze).
Major Leaguer My Little League Career Most Resembled: Any major leaguer who came up for a cup of coffee and never to be heard from thereafter. Let’s just say I was cut from my first T-Ball team with the coach suggesting I try soccer (ouch!). So it began and so it ended. Yet strangely enough, I got a T-Ball trophy…and thus will defend the right of any player with the briefest of appearances during a World Series-winning team’s season to get a ring. Speaking of which, as a part-timer with the Jays I didn’t get a ring, but was pleasantly surprised to be given a World Series gold watch by the team. So pleased in fact that I knocked back a few too many drinks at the SkyDome presentation ceremony and scratched the watch the first time I wore it. Oh well.

by jabalong on Apr 4, 2010 8:57 PM EDT reply actions

Oops

That should be with one out in the ninth for Ryan’s no-hit bid. Was thinking with two outs to go.
