Good initiative! I wonder if Syndergaard will start at the GCL Blue Jays or at Auburn…

GCL

college pitchers will head to Auburn.

On the topic, Jake Marisnick believes he’s headed to GCL Jays.

Really?

I’m going to Auburn in July…was hoping to see him there.

Very good idea and rec'd

A couple of ideas for improving this:

- Add the day 3 players to the list
- Add a column where we can put a link to the source like this

1s 38 Noah Syndergaard LHP Legacy HS, Mansfield, Texas Texas Signed

I really hope Sanchez and Wojciechowski do NOT sign

we can use the picks in next year’s much much better draft. Not signing McGuire would also be pretty solid.

I'm with COCO!!!

by Baseball North on Jun 11, 2010 1:05 PM EDT reply actions

So we dump two steals in this draft

for the chance to get someone potentially better in a draft we have no idea on yet, but may be better. Think i’ll pass on that one, both are real high upside guys and probably our best two picks.

Dumbest thing I’ve read in a while.

by metafour on Jun 14, 2010 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Doubly Agreed

Considering there are reasons to believe that we will have a ton of picks next year do to some free agent partings, it would be stupid to lose yet another year of top prospect development because we didn’t sign guys. We lost a year of development last year because of this.

by Joey P on Jun 14, 2010 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Not only that; but comp picks for failing to sign draft picks are unprotected: it doesn’t matter how much stronger next year’s draft is if you are forced to draft someone who will be an easy sign.

Just read the Knecht article

Impressed with Deck McGuire’s comments. Good for him. There’s no rush. Don’t know much about him, but sounds mature.

Also as a pro-Canadian baseball guy. Glad we took fliers on local and Canadian guys in the late rounds; even if nothing comes of it.

by Rhinos on Jun 11, 2010 5:37 PM EDT reply actions

It’s in the Knecht articule linked in TtD’s comment. I’ll quote the relevant bit…

On Monday night, he told reporters at a post-game news conference he was still too wrapped up in Georgia Tech’s crushing loss to think too deeply about becoming a Jay.

"The Blue Jays are a great organization and I look forward to helping them out in the future perhaps," McGuire said after the season-ending loss. "I’m still in the moment . . . tonight my teammates are a way more important story than I am."

Since then he hasn’t spoken to the media, declining interview requests through a Georgia Tech spokesperson.

Why aren't signing bonuses declared?

I can understand the Jays not wanting to declare signing bonuses as a rule if they don’t have to – why give that information to other players you’re negotiating with. But I’m wondering why MLB contracts are generally public knowledge (is this a rule?), why wouldn’t signing bonuses be too?

Hmm, according to Griffin in his new mail bag, Deck Mcguire may not want to be a

Blue Jay:

“he has cast off bad vibes about being happy drafted by the Jays. On draft day, he refused to participate in a conference call with Jays’ media, a long-time tradition on draft day even for players not yet signed. In fact when the Jays’ texted him about a call in follow-up, when he found out who it was he never texted back. When Morgan Campbell of The Star went through the Georgia Tech sports information department, they said okay, then came back and said he didn’t want to do it. Hmm!”

by ClintB on Jun 16, 2010 12:36 PM EDT reply actions

Just read that on BB too

Honestly I wouldn’t mind at all if he decided to not sign with the Jays. He is one of the prospects I was least excited about, and this pick is protected. Next year’s draft is considered to be very deep and having 2 first rounders would be swell. But then again I don’t think it is in his best interest to not sign, so I assume he will eventually.

by Arakasi on Jun 16, 2010 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I read somewhere that he was trying to stay more focused on Georgia Tech’s team rather then the draft but it seems odd he won’t even talk to the team that picked him. But for a College guy he’s gotta sign or go to the Indy leagues and hope he gets picked high next year in a deeper draft.

by bunner on Jun 16, 2010 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

i hope hes bluffing
its never a good thing to not sign your top pick

by FenixL on Jun 16, 2010 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Who's his agent?

In terms of Deck McGuire not wanting to talk on draft day, in the interviews I read with him it was because he was frustrated at his Georgia Tech team having just lost a big game and didn’t feel it was right for his personal draft news to take precedence over that.

As for him not wanting to talk to the Jays, who is his agent? Could it be something like the deal with James Paxton last year where Paul Beeston said that his agent…er, advisor Scott Boras wouldn’t let the team have direct contact with the player. Sounds ridiculously ungentlemanly, if I can put it that way, but could be a negotiating tactic.

I can’t really see McGuire not signing. Sure, he could go back and do his senior year of university, but he’s at the point after his junior year where a lot of guys seem to turn pro as maybe not much more to learn in college ball. Also he’s been drafted 11th overall, so hard to do much better than that in next year’s draft, while much more risk of slipping further, so it’d be kind of crazy not to sign now.

AA confident he'll sign McGuire

This wouldn’t qualify as moving Deck McGuire’s signing into the “likely” category I don’t think, but for what it’s worth in a Canwest article AA says he is confident that they’ll sign their top pick though negotiations will probably push the 15 August deadline. Online scuttlebutt to the contrary, AA and scouting director Andrew Tinnish have spoken to McGuire, who AA describes as “very ecstatic” at being drafted by the Jays and "very polite:

After Georgia Tech got eliminated (in an NCAA regional tournament), he said he was pleased to be drafted by us and he was honoured and he heard it was a great organization. He seemed very thrilled to be drafted by our organization and he certainly seemed excited to get started on his pro career.

So why will it push the deadline? AA just figures that’s the way it usually goes with the top half of the first round picks as they all try to wait to gauge the market with other signings. And the good news, they were actually able to talk to McGuire without an agent taking part (suck on that Scott Boras!).

by jabalong on Jun 19, 2010 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

There was a similar little blurb on this at MLB.com.

The bit I found interesting is a comment from AA on how he’d like the draft signing period to be dramatically shorter – to just a week or two:

“I’d love to see the deadline pushed up to a week after the Draft or two weeks after the Draft,” Anthopoulos said. “I think it would help everybody. I think it would help families. I think it would help colleges. I think it would certainly help Minor League baseball, because some of these players would be out playing, and also help players at well. I think those are some of the things that are going to be talked about in the next collective bargaining agreement.”

by jabalong on Jun 20, 2010 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

That is interesting

It certainly would help colleges. As it stands many colleges don’t have their rosters finalized until the first day of class.

Speaking of Bryant, here’s a bunch of stuff on him from a site called Baseball Beginnings.

by jabalong on Jun 20, 2010 2:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Bryant on what he'll do

In this article on Vegas area draft picks, here’s a bit on Bryant:

Entering the draft, the highest-profile local high school senior was Bonanza infielder Kris Bryant, who played shortstop for the Bengals but projects as a third baseman at the next level.

Bryant, who has signed with the University of San Diego, was ranked the No. 29 overall prospect by ESPN.com, No. 33 by Rivals.com and No. 53 by Baseball America.

He wound up sliding to the 18th round to the Toronto Blue Jays, who chose him at No. 546 overall.

Bryant wasn’t surprised by where he was taken because teams were aware how strong his college commitment is. He carried a weighted 4.78 grade-point average as a senior.

“I think I would have (gone higher), but it’s the whole ‘signability’ thing,” Bryant said. “The commitment to USD is strong. I think that scared away some teams.”

The 6-5 Bryant hit 22 home runs as a senior, the third most in state history. He batted .469 and drove in 51 runs on his way to Nevada Player of the Year honors from the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Gatorade.

“Going into the draft I knew I was in a win-win situation,” Bryant said. “I pretty much knew I was going to get drafted somewhere, but I didn’t care where I went. No stress for me.”

With his strong grade point average and what he has to say about the draft, sounds to me like a kid who’s planning on going to university…

Interesting

Maybe we will get lucky and he would rather take the 2-3 million and use the money wisely; after all, he is smart. Just think what kind of investments he could make with a few million.

I guess it depends what kind of education he wants.

by Joey P on Jun 20, 2010 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Would he be offered 2-3M? Seems like an awfully big chunk of the draft budget. That aside, 4.78GPA or no I’d find it difficult to turn down that sort of money. I mean geez, just set aside 100K to cover tuition if your baseball career doesn’t pan out… you can always go to school later.

Anybody who’s drafted in the 33rd round is bound to have a few holes in their game. The real question is whether the holes are fixable. The Jays are hoping they are.

by siggian on Jun 21, 2010 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s a raw HS kid who wasn’t a top prospect. I think the plan is to sign a bunch of those types and hope you get one guy who develops into something.

by metafour on Jun 21, 2010 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Sounds like we might have got a little steal here with Monroe Garcia – not in terms of money, but grabbing a good kid late. If we’re paying something like first-eight-rounds money, then presumably his talent is a lot better than a 33rd rounder.

And with that, Garcia decided to take the money and run – enough to pay for college later or maybe the Jays agreed to pay that too should his pro career not pan out. That got me wondering, do failed pro players who then go to college ever get scholarships and/or play on their college teams?

Let’s say a player signs out of high school at 18, toils in the minors until his mid-20s for sake of argument. I’d think that even if his minor league career flamed out, at that age he’d probably still have enough talent to play college ball. Just wondering.

by jabalong on Jun 22, 2010 1:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Oops, that should be “Melvin” Garcia, got it confused with his school’s name, Monroe. Was thinking in the back of my head, who name’s their kid Monroe? Doh! :P

by jabalong on Jun 22, 2010 1:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I’d think that even if his minor league career flamed out, at that age he’d probably still have enough talent to play college ball. Just wondering.

No doubt he’d have the talent, but he’d be unable to do so under the current NCAA rules. Once you are professional, you cannot play college ball. That’s why in hockey, Canadian kids have to choose between playing Junior A and Major Junior. In Major Junior, the kids get a small stipend, which makes them professionals in NCAA eyes. Junior A kids don’t get anything, so they can play NCAA games, and which is why some kids choose this route.

by siggian on Jun 22, 2010 8:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Do the rules say you can play a different sport NCAA than you played professionally?

I feel like I remember someone (Chris Weinke?) not making MLB and then going back to play College Football (and I think he actually won the Heismann trophy if I remember correctly)

"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"

by jessef on Jun 23, 2010 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup, though a pro athlete can’t later play that same sport in college, looks like they can play another sport. And you nailed it with Chris Weinke. According to his Wiki page, he played six years of pro baseball with the Jays, making it as far as AAA and the Syracuse Chiefs (actually hit over .300 in 113 games there one year), before going back to college and playing football, before going on to the NFL. Too bad he never got called up to the Jays, then he’d have been able to say he’d played in both the MLB and NFL.

That being said it isn’t as up to date as this one because it only reports on things that have been made official by the press release and not the local papers as TtD has been doing a wonderful job recapping.

JonJones

In Sieling’s article (MLB Bonus Baby) grading the Jays’ draft, he lists Jonathan Jones as signed. I don’t know his sources.

Speaking of the GCL team, Sierra, Marisnick and Hobson are there. As well as picks Hawkins, Fermin and a few others.

Marisnick thru 3 games is hitting .300.

UDFAs; any others?

It’s been awhile since this list has been updated. I noticed Casey Lawrence was an UDFA. You mentioned there were others? Have there been any more signings also?

List I have so far

Casey Lawrence, Drew Elliott, Jesse Hernandez, Chris Enourato, Matthew Johnson, Bryan Longpre, Michael Kelly

I’m sure there have been more but it’s tricky to keep track of, and for some all I have is names.

Signings have pretty much dried up it seems.

AA figured our no.1 McGuire would wait until the August deadline to see how the market shakes out, so I guess similar logic holds for our two unsigned number two picks.

But then we’ve got a big hole with no one signed from rounds 4 through 13! Same story even for these rounds, guys waiting towards the deadline?

Looking at our board, seems like you get a lot of signings from rounds 30 to 50 and many from 15-30 in the early weeks. How does this all compare to other teams and past Jays’ drafts?

Dickie Joe Thon signed to a $1.5 M contract. Yay!

Shane Opitz also signed in the past few days

Little behind catching up but will update with links later.
