Edwin Encarnacion Designated for Assignment

Now I didn't see this coming at all, press release:

BLUE JAYS DESIGNATE ENCARNACION

The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have designated 3B EDWIN ENCARNACION for assignment, while RHP SCOTT RICHMOND has been reinstated from the 60-day disabled list and optioned to Dunedin of the Florida State League (A).

ENCARNACION, 27, has appeared in 37 games for the Blue Jays this season, posting a .200 average with nine home runs and 22 RBI. In his sixth major league season, including 2009-10 with the Blue Jays the Dominican Republic native has a career .257 average with 88 home runs and 308 RBI.

RICHMOND, 30, is returning from a right shoulder impingement that sidelined him in spring training. The North Vancouver, British Columbia native has started two games on a rehab assignment recently, going 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA for the Dunedin Blue Jays. In parts of two seasons with Toronto, the right-hander is 9-14 with a 5.27 ERA in 32 games, including 29 starts.

Tom Back: I don't know what went on, but it seems strange that the Jays are just giving up on the guy.

There is a press conference later, I might have some answers after that.

This is weird

and right after Cito said that the demotion wasn’t permanent and that they wanted him to work some things out.

by IanJ on Jun 21, 2010 4:14 PM EDT reply actions

It reads like

Edwin didn’t want to go down so AA grew some balls and said then you get nothing.

by canadiancolts on Jun 21, 2010 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

predicted this...

As I predicted when spring training started but I thought he was doing well enough to avoid this. Maybe it’s because he didn’t take his optioning kindly yesterday.

What a joke

Terrible decision by the Jays. He was getting obscenely unlucky at the plate (BABIP of .167) and they decided to dump him in favour of Nick Green and Hoffpauir? EE was doing everything asked of him, and taking public insults in the media when Cito would say crap like “Where else would you hit him?”

Way to throw away an asset for nothing. Terrible, terrible decision. EE is going to get picked up by someone else really quick (my guess is the Twins or the Rockies) and make the Jays regret this decision.

Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

Is 1st base closer to 3rd base in Minny or Colorado?

The problem I don’t think was his bat, it was his awful arm.
He’s got 88 career HR’s and 93 career Errors. His streaky bat isn’t worth having around when he can’t throw the ball to first consistantly ever

I'm on a horse.

The quote below suggests it was the bat, not the arm.

And if that’s such a problem, put him at DH and have Lind play LF, or put him in LF, or put him at 1B. Don’t just throw him away.

Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

by Jevant on Jun 21, 2010 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Well they got something for Eveland. Would hope they could get something for EE.

by Arakasi on Jun 21, 2010 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Either which way is ok by me,

Although I would prefer if they ate his salary and traded for a prospect

If it was for the bat, the timing was unusual

Didn’t he single handedly win Fridays game with his bat?

I'm on a horse.

You do get the feeling there is more involved. Maybe Butterfield opinioned that Encarnacion’s fielding wasn’t going to improve and they decided to cut bait?

by dexfarkin on Jun 21, 2010 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

My guess is that they will still get something for him via trade. So they won’t be “throwing away an asset for nothing”.

From the Bluejays.ca article:

Available here:

<blockquote TORONTO — Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos would have understood if Edwin Encarnacion left the room in anger. Instead, after learning that he was heading back to the Minor Leagues, the third baseman shook Anthopoulos’ hand.

“Edwin is first class. He’s a good person,” Anthopoulos said. “This one was tough. He’s classy. A lot of times, when things like this happen, players storm out of the office or don’t shake your hand. He’s first class. He shook our hands.”>

and

“It’s just a move we felt we needed to make to improve the club,” Anthopoulos said. "We still believe in Edwin as a player, but it’s something we’ve been talking about the last little while just to get him going. Certainly he was disappointed in the decision that we made, but we told him this wasn’t permanent.

“If he goes down there, plays well, starts to get his swing going a little bit, he should be able to find his way back here.”

Again, a bad, bad decision.

Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

Personally I would have preffered if he stormed out in anger. Thats his problem he has no fire in his belly. He seems lazy and uninterested on the diamond.

by TwoEyesForAnEye on Jun 21, 2010 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

He seemed uninterested in Cincinnati too

Dusty Baker said something the effect of that the more Ecanacion struggles, the quieter he got.

In 2007 Encarnacion was removed from a game for not running out a pop-up, and a couple of weeks later was sent down while in the midst of a slump.

He seems like a talented player who is a headcase.

History repeating.

I wouldn’t call what he’s doing a headcase. To me, a headcase is a guy who deliberately causes turmoil. I think that EE has an unproductive way of dealing with a slump, but I don’t think he’s deliberately causing trouble. It would be nice if he continued to try hard and run out everything, but it seems he’s not wired that way. I do think he has been trying to be a better player and for a long time kept trying. I wonder though if he’s turned the corner (and not in a good way) and his problems at the plate have caused him to lose focus on effort.

by siggian on Jun 21, 2010 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't mean he is a headcase like Milton Bradley

He always seemed like a nice guy and a class act. When he slumps he just really slumps.

Also from what I remember, many of his errors were seemingly routine throws. If he made a diving stop, he could gun the ball to first, but if he had time to think about it, he got into trouble.

According to Cito on the Fan 590 this morning, EE has sore legs and that is why he wasn’t running out grounders. I don’t 100% buy it but I’m prepared to accept that it is one reason amongst many.

by siggian on Jun 22, 2010 8:50 AM EDT up reply actions

The article you quoted is about him being sent down

Why was that a bad idea? Sending a young struggling player down to work on his mechanics happens all the time.

by IanJ on Jun 21, 2010 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I really liked this guy when they got him

But the last week or so not hustling to 1st. Or not bothering to run to first is not excusable. There must be more to it than we know.

by oggyswain on Jun 21, 2010 4:32 PM EDT reply actions

On a young team

How long do you want to coddle a guy who won’t run to first?

2nd inning, runners on second and third, he strikes out on a ball in the dirt and just turns and walks away instead of running.

3rd inning, same situation, easy groundout.

4th inning, throwing error, unearned run.

They won’t miss his glove, they won’t miss his bat (even Johnny Mac can hit .200), and they sure won’t miss his attitude.

I've been looking at the sky

by Back In Black on Jun 21, 2010 4:32 PM EDT reply actions

DFA doesn't mean he's being released

It just means he doesn’t take up a roster spot while they put him through waivers, gauge trade interest, etc. They could still end up sending him to AAA.

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

by Torgen on Jun 21, 2010 4:45 PM EDT reply actions

maybe they can trade him

but I wouldn’t think he gets through waivers.

If someone claimed him

they’d be on the hook for the rest of his $6M, plus he has one more year of arbitration and usually guys get raises.

by Torgen on Jun 21, 2010 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

sure

but for a contender who has a hole at third, it’d be about $3.5 million with no players going the other way, and if he doesn’t turn it around they can DFA him and not worry about next season. I’m not saying someone will claim him, just that it could happen. He is a 27-year old third baseman with some pop and a decent eye at the plate.

sorry, by DFA him I meant not offer him arbitration

two thoughts

1 This seems to be a case of casting the bait to see if there are any nibbles
2 If there aren’t (and it seems a pretty safe move to DFA a player hitting below 200 earning that kind of money), perhaps EE can rebuild his swing and confidence. He seems pretty defeated out there.

As Torgen points out, he was DFAed, not released.

by siggian on Jun 21, 2010 4:48 PM EDT reply actions

it can't be casting a net....

because he’s gone is someone claims him on waivers….they can’t pull him off….But I’ll have more on what came out of the press conference in a bit.

by Tom Dakers on Jun 21, 2010 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions

It would be a decent move by the Os. He can’t possibly be worse, and for a C list prospect, the Jays would likely pick up the rest of his salary.

by dexfarkin on Jun 21, 2010 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Jordan Bastweet:

GM said Jays DFA’d Edwin simply to clear a 40-man spot for Richmond. Added that he’s confident EE will clear waivers

I suppose so

but what we really need is a better long man than Brian Tallet. Wherefore art thou, Dirk Hayhurst?

Its too late. He has forgotten about the Jays and now lives amongst his Dolphin friends!
