Arthroscopic Surgery for Dustin McGowan

Another press release:

MEDICAL UPDATE ON BLUE JAYS' DUSTIN McGOWAN

TORONTO BLUE JAYS pitcher DUSTIN McGOWAN today had his right shoulder examined by Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama.

Following that examination, and in consultation with Blue Jays Consulting Orthopedic Surgeon in Florida, Dr. Steven Mirabello, it was determined that Dr. Andrews will perform arthroscopic surgery tomorrow, Tuesday, June 22nd. Dr. Andrews will perform surgery to increase the range of motion in his right shoulder as well as evaluating the health of the rest of the shoulder.

No timetable has been set for Dustin McGowan to resume a throwing program.

Tom: I doubt any of us have the expertise to know what this will mean for Dustin in the long run, but I'm hoping the evaluation of the rest of the shoulder goes well. We have no idea what the time table will be for him to start throwing again.

Not great

If it turns out he needs another major surgery (labrum, etc…) then he is done for sure.

I have had my knee scoped and was walking same day with crutches and about 1 week later with one and none in less than 2 weeks. I would assume if it is just a scope he can start throwing in late July or early August. Still not great news.

Im my professional opinion that I learned entirely from watching House is that this looks like a clear case of Lupus or perhaps maybe Sarcoidosis.

anyone who watches House knows it's never Lupus!

total speculation on my part

and I’m not optimistic either, but it could just be cleaning up some scar tissue that has built up over time from the prior surgery and is what caused McGowan pain in throwing.

Things I learned on Twitter:

Bastian figures MaGowan is out at least until 2011, possibly 2012
Snooki is listening to eminem and going to Toy story 3 tonight.
Tony Gonzlez isn’t a fan of the WC officiating.

I'm on a horse.

Being a referee in football (soccer) is pretty hard. I know, I’ve been a ref myself, though only for the age 11-12 category. The amount of criticism coming your way is immense (especially from parents). Also, unlike the pretty static baseball umpires you have to move a lot to be in any sort of decent position. I think most of the officiating has been decent, it will get better only if the FIFA implements some technology to help the refs.

In his press conference, AA said this latest surgery for Dustin McGowan was not bad news or good news. Well that’s one way to put it, but for a guy with his injury/surgery track record, don’t see how another one is anything but bad news. I figure McGowan is a write-off, so if he does make it back to the Blue Jays it would be strictly a bonus for us. His health just seems to unstable to really plan for him being around.

Well it isn't bad news

because they aren’t fixing anything that is structurally wrong, they are just helping his range of motion.
