I'm in Camp's camp. Anyone else?
After tonight's 10th inning botch by Kevin Gregg, it's reached the point for me where it's time Cito anointed Shawn Camp as closer. Thank you, Kevin, for your 21 saves, but you're agonizing to watch pitch. Rarely do you make it easy. Too often do you blow opportunities to shut things down. Camp, on the other hand, has been a model of consistency in his role, and deserves a chance at closer. I'm not saying he'll automatically be a stellar success, but in my opinion he deserves a shot. Certainly tonight, in the Royals' 5-4 win, he was doing fine and ought to have stayed in. Cito bowed to the ridiculous trend of making sure the closer gets the chance to pad his stats with another save. C'mon, Cito-- go with the hot hand. It's Camp.

I'd rather have Sal Fasano closing.
But ya, Camp would probably be my choice for closer.
I still think one of the young 1,000 arms in the system should be groomed for a closer. It’s such an important position, and all the best teams have a dominant shut-down closer.

i think roenicke
has the best shot of being our closer. he has lights out stuff. he just wasn’t given enough chances by cito
can you really "groom" a shutdown closer?
seems like these guys are different animals to begin with.

often the best closers are failed starters

Soo...possibly Dustin McGowan in the future, then?
Although his ability didn’t really fail him, injuries just screwed him over.
I'm thinking that when the Leafs win the Cup, I'll lose my drinking problem.

you could say that about someone like Papelbon too

Gregg should lose his closer job just like Frasor lost his
No one on this team should designated the automatic closer and that’s been Cito’s problem.
Gregg having the 2nd highest walk count, better than only Tallet, is scary.
Ball.
at this point
i’d just have the whole bullpen closing. whoever’s available. purcey. camp. frasor. downs. gregg. janssen.
….just not tallet.
Gregg makes bj ryan look like Dennis Eckersley
I cannot endure another gregg save opportunity. If that’s how he responded after walking 3 and showing up Cito in his last appearance, he is clearly not closer material (or bullpen for that matter). Gregg needs the boot! ASAP!

I agree .This guy is too timid to be a closer.I think that he thinks he is far better than he actually is

that's the oposite of timid

I think we stick with Gregg until he gets traded
Granted its hard to find anyone who wants a closer who almost blew back-to-back saves, and didn’t record any in his last two tries.
Camp has been great the last few years. He’s gotten us out of tight situations time and time again. But he doesn’t have typical “closer” stuff.
We should just have a “closer by committee”; whoever is hot and matches up well against the next 3 hitter will close.
HEADING STRAIGHT FOR THEM, I PRESS DOWN MAH GUNS!
Camp has been great
but his very low K numbers don’t really call to mind the typical closer’s arsenal and 90% of his baserunners have been stranded, something you wouldn’t expect to continue. I’m not saying he couldn’t do the job as well as anyone else in our bullpen, but I don’t think it’s such an obvious and imperative move that it should clearly be made

saw something on yahoo
about the dodgers reportedly being interested in downs, frasor, and EVEN gregg. hopefully AA can pull off some savy trades and get rid of one of these guys
hopefully other teams are looking at the whole year
Gregg has had some great saves, some dominant innings. he could probably be a good set-up man for a good closer

are you guys watching the same games I am?
Okay.
I am as forgiving and optimistic as the next guy… but…
Anyone who thinks Gregg can be an effective late innings guy is crazy. He has repeatedly shown that he cannot throw strikes or pitch with runners on base.
He had a few good outings to begin the year, which make his stats deceiving.
He may have decent stuff, but he lacks the mental toughness of any good reliever. Just ask any cubs fan who went through the same thing with him previously.
Casey Janssen has the best stats besides Scott Downs (and it’s very close). Both have an xFIP in the 3.50s.
yeah Janssen has really been quite good
wonderful K/BB numbers and lots of ground balls

can anybody confirm whether he's a free agent next season?
that would hurt the pen
