Will Shaun Marcum be Traded Before the Deadline?
You all know the story, Shaun's been great since coming back from Tommy John surgery. After 18 starts he is 8-4 with a 3.36 ERA, pretty much in line with what he did before the injury. 92 strikeouts and 27 walks in 112 innings is pretty decent. He isn't being paid a heck of a lot, by baseball standards and he is just 28 so, if he was on the market, one would expect him to be a sought after player.
Just a reminder of the drill, the question isn't 'would you like to see him traded?', it is 'will he be traded?'.

Close to untradeable..
At least when it comes to getting fair value. Tommy John and some minor arm issues lately.
Nobody has even mentioned it in rumours.
I highly doubt he will be moved… if he were traded though, i would expect a LOT back.

yeah Marcum has been talked about. If the value is high and we get a P back than Ill be fine with it.

I doubt he goes anywhere
Sure, trade him for the right return but a guy who has been between a #2 starter and an ace for 3 seasons in the AL East and is 28 and is under team control for the next 3 years? Tough to get a comparable return.
My guess is the Jays lock him up this offseason. They clearly have the resources to do so and Marcum hasn’t given them reason to think he’ll be anything but stellat going forward.
The one worrying thing is that his delivery sure does look like it puts a lot of strain won his arm. I’m not sure he’s got the mechanics for the long hall (as a starter at least) but I could see him being very effective through, say age 32 or 33.

Marcum is not a ace type of pitcher. dont overrated him cuz he's on a team that has no pitching. He would be a solid 3 on any team with good staff (yanks, Sox, Tampa, White sox, Angels etc etc)
I would trade him in second but only for something young and comparable. If not then no harm in keeping him.

Hmm
I don’t think the Jays have “no pitching”. Their team ERA, K/IP, H/IP, and OBP against this season are all better than the Red Sox and Angels staff. Not to necessarily say that the Jays staff is better than those teams but saying they have no pitching is an overstatement. Just because a team doesn’t have a true “ace” doesnt mean they have a poor pitching staff.

find me teams that have a starter doing all that much better than a 3.36 ERA pitching to the AL East.
Add that to Romero, Cecil and Morrow and I’d say thats a pretty impressive, young pitching staff.

Dennis Eckersley is that you?
When we were in Boston this year I heard Eck say the exact same thing, That our team could never compete with anyone because with our pitchers there was no chance. He backed this up by saying he had not heard of any of our pitchers and therefore how good could they be.
I wonder if he thinks the same now that the Jays pitching stats are better across most categories.
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
if you want to say he doesn't have ace-type stuff that's one thing
but it’s hard to argue the results haven’t been there. In the majors Marcum has put up ERA+s of 108 (actually better than that because he had a 3.91 ERA as a starter and had a few relief outings), 121, and 125 (so far this season).
He has a very solid 7.2 K/9 with a low 3.0 BB/9 and this season he is striking out almost 3 1/2 times as many as he is walking.
CC Sabathia has put up ERA+s of 128 (2009) and 127 (so far this year) in the AL East, with very, very similar strikeout and walk numbers as Marcum (this season he has 7.4 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9.)
So it’s tough to say that Marcum hasn’t been getting ace-type results.

A Ace pitcher would put up these stats every year. Im not so sure Marcum can do that.
He’s having a good comeback year but lets not too excited about it till he does it next year and the year after.

he put up the same stats the last season he pitched....
and the season before wasn’t far off that. . Tough to expect a better track record than that for a guy that has only had 4 seasons in the bigs.
