Orioles 2 Blue Jays 8

Jose Bautista is amazing. Tonight, 4 hits, 2 homers, 5 RBI, a walk and he threw out Nick Markakis trying to move up to third on a fly out. 30 home runs on the season and 75 RBI. Not bad for the end of July and not bad for a guy that never had more than 16 homers or 63 RBI in a season before.

The top of the order did all the heavy lifting. Fred Lewis was 3 for 5, with a steal and 3 runs. Yunel Escobar was 3 for 5, scoring two runs. And Vernon Wells drove in 2. The rest of the lineup was 1 for 18.

Ricky Romero had a great day too, 7.2 innings, 9 hits, 2 earned, 1 walk and 8 k. He did tired in the 8th, giving up 4 hits and the sac fly that Bautista turned into the double play. Scott Downs got the last 4 outs.

Yunel Escobar also had just an unbelievable play, getting to a ground ball behind second base and making a glove hand flip to Hill at second to get the out. If you didn't see it, go here, you'll thank me. I love the smile on his face afterwards.

Jays of the Day are Bautista (.215 WPA) and Romero (.201). Escobar deserves an honorable mention.

That makes us 11-0 against the Orioles this year. Tomorrow Brad Mills gets a chance to extend the streak. Jeremy Guthrie is victim Oriole starter.

Haven’t been paying attention to Jays this week. Why? Skipping a couple starts to save innings?

i think Escobar deserves a JOD just because of how amazing that play was
great, great play

Mac has done similar, but I don’t think you make that comparison. JMac is an old school artist, who has done his time and learned from the best. Escobar is an insanely talented natural for whom this is the natural state of affairs. Combine them, and I think they become Voltron.

Been at the game. Yunazy and the Jedi had made it so much fun!

I vote to keep the Jedi here, unless we get such a mind-blowing offer, that’ll make it somewhat conceivable to let him go. His positive effect is definitely showing. There’s a reason why Yunazy and Fred get some nice pitches to look at. You can’t just walk them and go after Jo-Bau…

Keep Bautista

Me too, I don’t want to see the Jays trade Bautista, at least not during this season. He’s too much fun to watch and I want to see if he can take a run at George Bell’s club single-season HR record.

Yunel

I’m more used to seeing the good defensive stabs in the outfield lately, but I was a bit stunned with the behind the back flip by Yunel. He’s a fun guy to watch play, and it’ll be interesting to see which direction the Jays go in the future with the quality prospects they have in the minors.

I sort of feel bad for the Orioles

However, they will most likely be getting the top pick in baseball next year.

by Joey P on Jul 28, 2010 7:20 AM EDT reply actions

Bautista isn't going anywhere.

and people might as well quit talking about him being the 3rd baseman going forward as well, leading in outfield assists, and he’s nowhere near top 10 for games played at the position..even if his production falls off to more mortal like levels he’s extremely valuable in RF. People really need to wrap their heads around what kind of player we have here. Deal Lind, he’s got some value with that contract..Snider at DH mostly and rotate all the outfielders accordingly..we need the DH spot for Vernon and his 50 year contract down the road anyways.

while it's a LOT of fun to watch his arm

outfield assists are a really, really poor indicator of actual fielding ability. while there are plenty of problems with small-sample Zone Ratings, this year his play in RF (assuming he keeps it up) has a -22 rating which is pretty bad. I’m not sure if that takes into account assists, and his bat contributions have been worth a LOT more than his defensive liabilities, but he didn’t turn from a 101 OPS+ player into a Gold Glove 154 overnight.

sorry, meant to add

players that don’t/haven’t play OF a lot tend to rack up assists because teams either don’t know they have a cannon like Bautista, or they gamble on it

Yeah, a key element to getting a large number of OF assists is surprise. Once the third base coaches compensate, the number drops.

by Back In Black on Jul 28, 2010 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

even still

once word gets out how many 1st to third attempts get keyboshed because of fear of the arm?..even if the assists go down,a lot of baserunners get held up over the course of the season…there are numbers you can crunch..and numbers you can’t, something the stats guys forget sometimes.

by ABsteve on Jul 28, 2010 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

certainly

i’m not suggesting that next year he’ll have 0 assists, but even when the every Jays fan knew Rios had a cannon of an arm (rookie season as an example) plenty of teams ran on him and he racked up 11 assists in 111 games. once teams know, the chances to throw a guy out will decline

also, sorry

but you cited him being a good fielder by showing us a stat (assists), but when I bring a different stat that says the opposite, ‘you can’t crunch’ those numbers?

Actually

the “stats guys” do include prevention of extra bases in arm ratings

those numbers have actually been well-crunched

there is a measurable impact, though it doesn’t translate into a ton of runs over the course of a season

Deal Lind? Seriously? We all piled on the Braves for dealing low on Escobar and you want to do the same with Lind?

nope, FLUUUUUKE

his 128 OPS+ in April and 122 OPS+ in June… plus 144 last year are flukes, but we should expect Bautista to keep up his 154 pace.

i bet you didnt want to trade Lind last year…….

by FenixL on Jul 28, 2010 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

no

but this is a different team this year, we appear to be building an athletic versatile team in the vein of the Rays now, yet we have a 26 year old who can’t even play a decent LF. What do we do with a star veteran player who’s raking…yet who has a minor injury, and you’d like to avoid having him taking wear and tear in the field? If the stats nerds are telling me that he is still holding his value through some obtuse stat that only they understand…then I guess we’ll get something in a trade. So what’s the problem? We’re facing a logjam of talent right away, and I say deal the young kid who can’t play in the field.

by ABsteve on Jul 28, 2010 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

okay

first up, we’re not even CLOSE to the Rays right now. their pitching is just unbelievably good (even compared to us). this is subjective, but besides Ben Zobrist, do you ever find a player who can play mutiple positions who both: is actually GOOD at the positions (Bautista is passable, not good, though fun to watch) and can hit worth a lick (ruling out McDonald)? Jose Bautista is not a ‘star.’ he’s having a terrific season and I’m thrilled he’s doing it for the Jays, but get real, man. ‘pretty decent’ players do not turn into MVP calibre players overnight, even if they had one excellent month the year before. it just doesn’t happen with enough regularity that ANYONE can say definitively that he’ll repeat it. the observable, repeatable evidence shows that much more likely than not, it’s a statistical anomaly (and again, i’m hoping it’s not, if they don’t trade him). Lind is having a very bad season by anyone’s standards, including ‘stats nerds.’ as a result, why would you think it’s a good idea to trade him? we just got Yunel Escobar, a player with boatloads of potential, because the Braves sold low on a player with a good track record. Lind’s 2009 was fantastic, and he was head and shoulders above every other DH. i won’t scare you with ‘nerdy stats,’ but given his track record, it’s much more likely that he’ll have more good seasons (maybe not as good as 2009, but good) than ones like this. I don’t think you can see clearly from the JoBau bandwagon.

something we're all forgetting so far as the Jedi is concerned...

first off, I’ll without hesitation admit I’m the guy whipping the horse on the Bautista wagon. But lets get honest with ourselves here..prospects are all well and good, but this is a business..and 58 people crowded behind home plate is not going to float a major league baseball team for an extended period of time…a guy going for the home-run title will put asses in the seats…and the new Sportsnet JoBau " in the hall of the mountain king" commercials tells me the Bautista trade story is as dead as MJ…really doubt they roll out a new ad campaign to trade him by the end of the week..sorry guys. So far as Lind…I’m sticking to my guns, E5 can play 3rd, Lewis is a good baserunner, Snider can play a decent outfield, Lind can’t play in the field at all..but he can really hit..just not this year…but he will replicate that first year of hitting every year after this one? meh

by ABsteve on Jul 29, 2010 12:19 AM EDT reply actions

we all know he can't field

but there’s a DH position for a reason. even if he only plays in 140 games, his bat (assuming this year isn’t the norm) is too valuable to trade, and trading him in the middle of an awful year is just a bad decision; the return is going to be someone like Alex Gonzalez. fair enough about the commercials though, and we only have a couple more days to wait to find out…
