Blue Jays Trade Brett Wallace for Anthony Gose
Not sure who it's for but he's being flipped over from the Astros in the Oswalt trade.
AA continues to pluck Amaro's prospects.
Gose is a toolsy 2nd rounder from the 2008 draft. He's got serious wheels and a hose.
Turning 20 in a couple of weeks.
Striking out a lot and not showing a ton of power in the FSL but that's understandable.
Here's what Mike Newman (Scouting the Sally) said about Gose's defense after the '09 season:
In watching Gose in centerfield, I could not help but think of "The Bad News Bears" and "Kelly" catching everything from foul pole to foul pole. In making spectacular sliding catches in both outfield gaps, he showed gold glove caliber range. As impressive as those catches were, however, his routes can definitely improve, as well as his overall body control. He was borderline reckless in the outfield and could leave himself open to serious injury. In seeing him twice, he was not in a situation where he needed to show off his arm strength.
http://scoutingthesally.com/2009/11/scouting-report-anthony-gose-of-philadelphia-phillies/
Sure, Gose has huge upside and will likely stick in CF, but I have no clue how AA couldn't net more for Wallace who has one of the highest floors out there.
More to come IMO.

Love this guy's speed
Look at his SB numbers and 3B numbers, the guy’s got blazing speed, which as everyone knows plays on offense and in the field.
And I concur, very boner-inducing.
He's been caught stealing almost as much as he has stolen.
He does have great speed but he’s not a great baserunner yet.

In the Phillies top 10 BA says that Gose receives 70 grades for each of his arm, speed, and defense
They also say he has solid-average raw power despite the uninspiring current in-game power.
Dude certainly has some Carl Crawford in him.

Raw player with exceptional tools.
He strikes out a ton and doesnt walk but if he ever puts it together he could be a special player. Thats a huge “if” though. Depending on what the Jays gave up I like the upside potential.

That simply can't be all of it
Simply can’t be it. You don’t give up a Wallace type for a Gose type (Wallace being ML ready, Gose being anything but) unless there are other things yet to drop.
Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.
"You had to have the BIG salad."
"Suit up."
"Eric, when your mom says are you ready for your catheter...the answer is no."
Gose
he can`t even handle a bat right now, this would be a ridiculously bad trade
I am holding out that this is only the beginning.
Any good AA has done in the past would be undone for this.

Yes…yes, it would.
"A baseball park is the one place where a man's wife doesn't mind his getting excited over somebody else's curves."
No it wouldn't
If (and this is a big if because I don’t believe this is the whole of it) the deal goes through as is…
Yes it hurts, yes it stings
But it doesn’t undo Morrow, Escobar, lewis and all the other good moves that AA has brought the Jays.
So he made some good trades
So he has free reign to make a colossally shitty one?
This can’t be the trade…
by craig in calgary on Jul 29, 2010 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions
What part of the big IF didn't you get?
And no I didn’t say he was allowed to make crappy trades all I said was that it does not undo everything.
I guess some people on this site believe that the Universe will be unmade if Brett Wallace is dealt.
I don't know how read words inside brackets.

It's not that bad

"You had to have the BIG salad."

"Eric, when your mom says are you ready for your catheter...the answer is no."
matters not
Gose has proven nothing in the two years he’s been around, Wallace has proven a lot, just a bad deal all around. Good for Houston though, they found their replacement for Berkman
Wallace projects
as a top-20 first baseman with unimpressive OBP, and poor defense. He’ll make the majors and start, but Gose has the potential (and could very well not reach it, of course) to be a superstar CF. and the value of even a good defensive CF who can hit at all is not even comparable to the value of a pretty good 1B.
Besides, Gose is: 19, playing in a super pitcher’s league (Florida State League), already showing a little power, stole 76 bags last season, and is already ‘the best fielding CF in the minors.’
jeez, you’d think AA would be entitled to a little slack, considering he’s basically batting 1.000? he hasn’t made a single bad move yet, and he’s made a couple outstanding ones. Brett Wallace is not the next coming of Albert Pujols.

Jordan is trying to convince himself obviously
Jays have logjam at MLB level w/ Lind/Lewis/Wells/Bautista/Snider. If Wallace is not TOR 1B in ’11, Lind could be, freeing up ABs at DH…

Yeah, I get the notion of being able to free guys up and find someone else to man 1B,
but you should be able to get more for Wallace than just Gose.

will it be a call in segment
I’d like to murder a small animal while speaking to him
Wallace
I have to suspect there is something seriously wrong with Wallace from what the Jays have seen of him over the last year. They must know something that isn’t plainly obvious.
Either that, or there’s another deal.

but couldn't
which seems to imply to me that Philly regarded him more highly than they did Taylor
Said that he has no idea what they’re going to do at 1B next year.
"A baseball park is the one place where a man's wife doesn't mind his getting excited over somebody else's curves."
Honestly, I don't think this is as bad as you guys are reacting
Look at Wallace’s numbers. The guy isn’t that young anymore and is OPS’ing barely 30 points higher then the team average in AAA.
I think there is a possibility that the Jays are looking at JPA as a possible future 1b. He has much more power then Wallace, and has honestly passed him in plate discipline as well. There is always Lind as a possibility too.
I think the end point is that Wallace at best projected as Overbay 2.0. Not that great a prospect to lose.
Las Vegas does inflate Wallace's stats.
His BB/K are far from ideal and it isn’t hard to find a 1B who can hit.
Still feel they should have gotten more than just Gose.

It also follows up on what people have been saying here
To compete in the AL East we need impact players. Wallace was never going to be that. Unless you consider impact to be .285 with a .335 OBP and 20 home runs with below average defense from a 1B.
Yeah
Wallace is a classic high floor/low ceiling guy.
No doubt the man is going to produce but finding a mid-800 OPS 1B is easy yo.

Lind or Snider or JPA or someone else will be manning 1B soon.

AA Misstep Here Me thinks
So who slept better last night David Cooper or Brian Dopirak? Can’t fathom AA’s disdain for consistant hitting, especially at the corner infield positions (don’t the Jays have the lowest team BA in the majors?).
Look for the 2011 new Bluejays Manager to be Dave Huppert…….he’s from AA’s former Expo family and afterall………he knows all the players!
by Design8tedrallykiller on Jul 30, 2010 8:24 AM EDT reply actions
(don’t the Jays have the lowest team BA in the majors?)
The Jays have the 26th ranked BA. If you are thinking OBP, they are 27th. So, the answer is No.
Can’t fathom AA’s disdain for consistant hitting,
Dude, the guy hasn’t even had a full year as GM yet. How can you say he has a disdain for anything yet when there isn’t much of a track record yet. I think what you are actually trying to say is he has a disdain for high OBP (no GM would disdain consistent hitting). Given the existing team (and contracts) and the available free agents, I’m not sure that AA could have assembled a team based on a high OBP like the Red Sox. You obviously don’t like this swing-hard-you-might-hit-something style of offense and I probably can’t convince you otherwise. That’s OK. I like the idea of trying something novel..
Based on the recent draft and trades, about the one thing AA does seem to prefer is gambling more on potential than JP would. Gambling implies both hitting the jackpot and going bust.
especially at the corner infield positions
It’s not like really good corner infielders are just laying around ready to be picked up. The Jays certainly don’t have MLB-ready players on their farm. Overbay is here just for this season until his contract runs out and EE may or may not follow him out the door depending on whether they think they have his replacement.
no way they move JPA to first, they’ve invested too much time turning him into a catcher, and apparently his defense is now average, so he should still be the future plan at catcher, unless AA pulls something out of left field with him too…
by Josh Winninger on Jul 30, 2010 11:53 AM EDT reply actions
something needs to be done with the incoming logjam at C with good kids at AAA, AA & A.
The one with just average defence should move elsewhere in the diamond.
That’s what the Jays did with Carlos Delgado and Ed Sprague (even without the impressive intramural competition like now).
It is not necessarily a logjam
The only one tearing things up is Arencibia. Jeroloman’s hot start has cooled off and d’Arnaud is having a mediocre offensive season so far. Every team needs two catchers at every level and there is always room for them to get bats with the DH position.
Buck won’t be with us next year and AA has hinted heavily that the role will go to JPA, which will allow everyone to move up a level. Jeroloman only projects as a MLB backup catcher anyways, but wont happen next year as it would be unwise to break in two catchers in the same year.
And the year after next? And Carlos Perez?
“logjam” may be too strong a word, but there are indeed quite a few highly rated kids in the position. It’s a good problem to have. And it’s okay to switch them around the diamond.
The other "highly regarded" guys are in A ball
Sure they have potential, but anything can happen. I try to not get too hyped on prospects until they are performing consistently in AA.
Onions Baby Onions
Update on this trade
Not that it means too much right now, but Wallace has appeared in 23 games with the Astro’s since the trade, gathering 68 AB’s .191ave, .221 slg, 2 doubles, 0 HR and 5 RBI’s
Not exactly making the Jay’s regret trading him for a high Celing guy in Gose atm.
