Keith Law says the Jays will sign Dickie Thon
Not that I can read the story, I don't have a subscription.
Update: MLB Trade Rumors apparently do have a subscription, they say Thon will get $1.5 million from the Jays.

The Blue Jays have agreed to sign fifth-round pick Dickie Thon for $1.5MM, according to ESPN.com’s Keith Law. The Blue Jays won’t likely make an official announcement until on or near August 16th, the deadline for signing draft picks. Otherwise, other draftees would be able to use Thon’s above-slot bonus as leverage. A $1.5MM bonus is mid-first-round money; no fifth-round pick signed for more than $680K last year, according to Baseball America.
Now that the Blue Jays have pried Thon away from his commitment to Rice, they have agreed to sign six of their top ten selections.
Good signing considering all the talk with his father and him being insulted about dropping that far etc etc.

oh. And very very much over slot for this one.
Guess they werent just blowing hot air when they said that eh?

How talented is this guy? I know it’s way way over slot for where he was drafted but how much did his bonus demands impact his draft position?
definitely impacted it
but more like turning a 3rd rounder into a 5th rounder than a 1st rounder into a 5th rounder.

AA said a few times that he viewed Thon as a first round talent
its nice to see money not getting in the way
definitely agree with that
and if AA sees that kind of talent in Thon, it’s a great move by the Jays. I didn’t read anyone (who didn’t draft Thon) who thought he was a first-round talent, but what matters is what the Jays see in him and how hard he’s willing to work.

I guess that you don't have to believe he's first round talent
as long as you believe he’s worth first round slot money. I think it’s evident that the Jays believe more money can be attributed to signing draftees than MLB slot recommends.
that's basically my position

to clarify
definitely not saying that Thon isn’t first-round talent – he may well be.
Just agreeing that the Jays clearly believe they can get value by going over slot, and I hold that position as well. So if they view him as being worth first round slot money, I’m totally on board.

Very nice to see this signing. Who would have thought Thon would agree before Deck? Would still like to see more info on signings from some of our other top draft picks.
Shane Opitz
11th rounder has signed as well, according to the Denver Post.
I wonder what this might mean for other HS players that were taken late
I wonder if the Jays have the resources to convince some of them to sign.
Depends on who you are referring to. Thon wasn’t a shocking signing (read my post in the Intl FA Thread); this doesn’t make Bryant any more likely (probably kills it entirely if anything). Bryant’s asking price was more than Thon’s (probably upwards of $2 mill) and the fact that he lasted to the 18th round should signal college for him.
Seth Conner (41st round) is a HS kid who could legitimately sign. The kid from Puerto Rico (Benitez) could sign given that PR kids are usually a lot easier to sign than American HS kids (due to less options). Vander Tuig isn’t going to happen; that kid is going to UCLA.
