Question Time

I was asked tonight "if the over/under for Jose Bautista home runs is 47, which do you take?" So I thought it was be a good question for everyone.

It is amazing to me that we could be talking about 47 homers. At the start of the year, would the over/under have been more than 16 or 17? The great thing about baseball is that it can always surprise you.

I guess the other question about Jose is over/under on outfield assists. I keep thinking teams will stop running on him but I guess folks are slow to learn.

Still on holiday, so not seeing much of the baseball, which is just as well.

Hey Tom, ain’t it like really early in the morning for you to be posting this, especially when you are on your vacation?

I’m surprised that only a third of people so far think Jose Bautista can break the Jays single-season HR record this year. Sitting at 35 HRs, he only needs 12 more to tie and 13 to beat it, with 49 games to play. I think that’s doable, assuming Cito gets him in the lineup most of the time. Coming from the Dominican Republic, Bautista knows very well who the current record-holder George Bell is and I’d bet he wants bragging rights.

Overbay

Not sure where else to put this, but apparently Overbay isn’t in the lineup today and has cleared waivers, according to CBS. They are suggesting he could be on the move, and mention Tampa Bay.

Fine by me. And perhaps if we pay the rest of his salary they’ll throw a C prospect back at us.

Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

Why C prospect specifically?

Are they super deep there as well? Regardless, we’ve got way too many good C prospects to be thinking of adding more.

I anticipate that would be the best we could get. It’s better than nothing at the end of the year, right?

I guess that means Lind takes over first indefinitely?

No disrespect to Lyle, but if he is on the move, hallelujah! I want to get on with seeing players that are part of our future. Rather than waiting until next year, I figure we might as well see what kind of full-time 1B Lind is over the rest of this season so we have a better idea in the offseason where we stand.

In terms of Lyle going to Tampa, don’t see anything on Google News about it, though here’s a FoxNews story today on how he’d be a good fit for the Rays.

Well, perhaps CBS is punking Fox then…haha. With Dan Johnson in their lineup right now, Overbay would be a definite upgrade for them, in my books.

Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

Just read Shi Davidi's comments on twitter

Overbay said he was open to resigning with the Jays next year.

If we can’t find a DH/1B type in trade/free agency; and I don’t think we have a replacement coming up that would by better than Lyle, is there any harm in signing Overbay to a short term contract?

by Rhinos on Aug 12, 2010 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

If we can't find anyone better

and can sign him to a short, cheap contract, I see no reason not to keep him around. He’d be a good pinch hitting option and can fill in for Lind as a defensive replacement if need be.

The problem, as I see it, is that some team is bound to offer him more than the Jays should probably pay for someone to fill that role.

C meaning "c" rated, not a catching prospect

Thanks for that catch Hugo

that is indeed what I meant.

I took the under

whether he hits 40 or 42 or whatever number he manages to reach its still a remarkable thing. This is as big a surprise as the year Brady Anderson hit 50…of course I hope Jose keeps it up rather then immediately falling back to his career norms.

Today's lineup

F. Lewis dh
Y. Escobar ss
J. Bautista rf
V. Wells cf
A. Lind 1b
A. Hill 2b
T. Snider lf
E. Encarnacion 3b
J. Molina c

I didn’t see another thread, so I posted here. This lineup I can live with. There’s no way Snider should be batting leadoff. Remember Bautista as leadoff last season? Lewis or Wise should be leadoff every game. No Overbay today and Lind at 1B, that’s more like it. I would like to see more starts for Bautista at 3B with EE out, but I’ll take what I can get. It’s been a disaster with JPA behind the plate, so let’s see if Molina can settle down the staff. Not down on JPA yet, but I don’t recall another rookie catcher resulting in so many opposition runs being scored (or is it coincidence?).

I dont know how you can blame JPA for all of it

Maybe a bit of it yeah… but its not like hes calling for Marcum to hang breaking balls belt high every pitch.

JPA

Franchise saviour on Saturday, disaster by Wednesday.

I refuse to blame a few pitching performances on a rookie catcher.

Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

Pretty sure Marcum and Romero were throwing what they wanted to throw.

Make that 12 away from breaking George Bell’s record.

Drinking the Jedi Kool-aid

A month ago, I would have bet the under on 37 hrs. Now that I’ve let the force flow through me, I believe.

by siggian on Aug 12, 2010 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t know. Bautista’s played a lot of games this year, well over his average for a season. The only reason I took the under was that I expect him to hit a wall and pretty soon.

by dexfarkin on Aug 13, 2010 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I certainly see where you are coming from. If I wasn’t on the bandwagon, I’d be pointing out that he basically needs to hit about two home runs a week to reach 50. That’s a pretty tall order and since the Jays will be playing a lot against the Yanks, Rays and RSox, he’ll have to do it against decent pitching staffs too.

by siggian on Aug 13, 2010 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Can I bet 47 exactly?

I feel like 48+ is a bit much
but I also feel like 46- is a bit low
He will most likely hit 45-49 homers
