How Tony Fernandez Saved My Life...
Someone asked me to post this so here goes...
For the life of me I can't remember what game it was or who the Jays were playing but I'm sure it was the 1998 season. There was a good crowd and my buddy and I had infield seats on the 3B side but way up under the 200 level overhang. About 20 rows down from us there were a row of douchebags with great seats ---Toronto was trailing in the game and in the middle of the 4th inning the 7 douchbags all left together.
For about 1 2/3 innings(?) we happily enjoyed their seats. The Jays mounted a comeback and with 2 runners on Tony Fernandez made his way to the plate. I felt a sharp knee in my thigh -I was scoring the game and hadn't noticed the 7 douches return. I found myself looking up into a line of 7 huge frat boys angrily scowling at me while the crowd around us focused on the at bat.
The guy that nudged me started shaking his head and jack jawing: "Nah, nah, buddy I don't think so..."
My friend and I stood up and the 6 guys behind buddy start climbing over the seats to get into the row above us, below us and then climb into our row behind us. Surrounded, facing terrible odds and a potential beat down, I got polite and offered to move. I said: "There's no problem, we're moving..."
The nudger gets in my face and loudly said: "Yeah there's no problem if you BEAT IT!" and jabbed his thumb upwards in front of my face like he was calling me out at the plate. "So just fucking BEAT IT!"
I shook my head as I said: "Argh, man why'd you have to do that?" Just as my buddy threw a straight right over my shoulder and punched the guy in the face, and all hell broke loose. The melee was on and just as the 7 on 2 odds came crushing down on us from all sides Tony Fernandez hit a 3 run bomb giving us back the lead! The crowd went nuts, interrupting our fight as the 7 guys stopped to celebrate and high five each other. We passed out some high fives and casually went back to our seats.
In the fracas I lost my score sheet so I'm not sure of the exact game, date and score but I'll never forget how Tony Fernandez saved my life or at least saved me from a ride in a paddy wagon with my teeth in my pocket.

Haha, good story.
I was the one who asked you to post this.
I thought he would have visited when you were terminal in the hospital and lifted your spirits.
But him saving you from a Pack of Douches makes for a good story too :)

until the homerun part
i thought Fernandez fouled a ball to their face or something
that would have been unfortunate (read hilarious)
To Infinity. And BEYOND!!!

Sorry memory does fit facts
I love the story but facts don’t match. You can go to baseball reference and get details on every homer Tony Fernandez hit in his career. he never hit a 3 run homer or even a 2 run homer in 1998 at home.
Even in 1999 nothing matches the story re: 3 run homer, although he did hit a 2 run homer off Detroit’s Moelher in the bottom of the 6th that was as close as I could get.
In neither year did he hit a homer vs. the White Sox.

Thanks for doing that research Ken
and making me wonder if I have early onset Alzheimer’s disease.
I know it was a home game and Tony hit a home run that saved me an ass kicking.
Even a mistake may turn out to be the one thing necessary to a worthwhile achievement
