September rotation?
Brandon Morrow is being shut down after his next start. With him done, Litsch out, and Rzep being (in my mind) generally ineffective, I wonder what the rotation will look like heading into the end of the year. Marcum, Romero, and Cecil will remain in the rotation for sure, but who will the other two guys be? I present some names to you for discussion, with a little tiny blurb about why I believe they should or should not be in the rotation, or whether I am indifferent.
Marc Rzepczynski - currently in the rotation, but as I mentioned, generally ineffective. I'm not into the in-depth sabermetrics, so I'll go with ERA and WHIP here: 6.31 and 1.64. Lasted 5.2 and struck out 8 against Detroit, so maybe he's adjusting a little bit. Then again, gave up four runs and five hits while walking five.
Brian Tallet - he's been in the rotation already, so I have to put him here. Since mostly everyone here agrees he should be released or pitch only when well ahead/behind, I shall say no more.
Brad Mills - ERA doesn't give me confidence at 4.72 (5.28 at the MLB level), but he's been up in the big leagues already and it wouldn't surprise me to see him back up here again.
Robert Ray - currently the owner of a 5.03 ERA. Even in Vegas, that's not a great sign.
Sean Henn - his other numbers make me wonder why his ERA is only 4.64.
Other spare parts - this includes players like Zach Jackson and Lance Broadway, who are the definition of depth guys, but could at the least make a spot start or two.
Shawn Hill - has made ten starts in the various levels of the Jays' organization according to FanGraphs, but seems to have struggled a little in his four starts with Vegas: 1-2 with a 4.20 ERA while pitching a combined 15 innings through those four starts. Wouldn't surprise me to see him up here, though.
Scott Richmond - could happen. He's pitched well so far in his minor league assignments, but has yet to pitch above the AA level.
Kyle Drabek - won't happen. From what I've seen, AA prefers to err on the side of caution, so he won't move Drabek up. Ditto for Zach Stewart.
An ideal situation for me is to DFA Tallet and move Scrabble to the pen. Marc's been getting shelled out there almost every time out, so an inning or two here and there is a little less for him to look at and figure out what he did right and what he can improve on. More focus on a smaller sample size might equal a little more success for him. In that situation, the other two starters would be Mills and Hill. I like Richmond, but I don't think AA ball is really adequate prep for the majors, even if it's only for a month.
Of course, if we're really in need of pitchers against the Yankees, we could go get Andy Marte from Cleveland...I always love watching Nick Swisher strike out on three pitches.

Rob Ray
I was in Vegas a month back and saw him pitch. He gave up 4 runs in the 1st, 2 more in the 2nd before even getting an out. He could not throw a strike and when he could it was out over the plate for everyone to tattoo (which they did). Everyone remember Chris Woodward? He was 3-5 off Ray with a double 2 Runs scored and an RBI. I was kinda happy to see Woodward again but he is not a great hitter and Ray made him look like a top tier leadoff guy.
please don't
use one game to show how a player is bad. it’s just not fair.

my guess... Zep and Mills
Zep: almost a sure shot to stay there. he was pretty awesome last year, and I think he deserves a good long look this season. that being said, I’m not as excited about him as I was at the start of the season.
Tallet: complaining about sore arm. I really don’t think they’ll stick him in the rotation.
Mills: probably the most likely choice behind Zep. not too exciting.
Ray: I don’t think he’s ahead of Mills
Henn: maybe, he’s been to the majors before… that’d be disappointing though, at least to me.
Hill: I think he’s on the DL, but otherwise would have been a pretty solid choice.
Richmond: I hope it’s Richmond. I think a lot of people forgot how awesome he was in the first half last season. long term probably in the pen though.
Drabek/Stewart: past innings limit, so no.
I haven’t heard anything about Hill being on the DL…I know he pitched 7 good innings last week, but that’s about it. Zep and Mills wouldn’t be a bad combo either, but I stand by my theory that analyzing smaller pieces of game time would be most beneficial for Scrabble. I have no way of really proving it other than to say experience (not with baseball, though, so I’m not sure how it would work for a pitcher. I’m just a soccer goalie :P) I can live with two of the following: Zep, Mills, Richmond, Hill.
Don’t worry, I never forgot how good Richmond was. Kinda like Dana Eveland this year, although he was better.

I think Eveland had 4 good starts, and Richmond had a good 1st half. He was better and for longer.
He was also pretty good in 08. All in all, if I’m not mistaken, he put together a string of like 9 or 10 starts in a row, to start his career, where he threw at least 5 innings and allowed fewer than 3 runs.
He also threw up to 93, with a nasty slider.
I dunno. I just think Richmond is going to be pretty darn good. Fortunately for the Jays, they’ll have him for awhile, while he’s still not too old. Unfortunately for Richmond, he probably won’t be around long enough to get a bigger payday.
Cecil and Marcum should be shut down as well (and, frankly, who cares? It’s September and the Jays are out of it. So, it’s either finishing .500, get to 90 wins or a better draft position. I’d go for the latter).
So, it might be a rotation of Romero (no indication he would be shut down based on the innings rule and foreseeable injuries), Rzep (might as well), Richmond, Tallet and Hill.
Eww Tallet.

Agree 100%
As much as I hate hate hate hate hate Tallet starting, I think we need to be very careful with our staff. Shutting down Cecil(young arm) and Marcum(coming off surgery) would be a great idea because right now these games mean nothing. Shutting down Morrow, Cecil, and Marcum is good idea to save their arms. The last thing we need is one of them to get injured during a start in September or pitch too many innings and screw up their arms.
