Yup it's official

Arencibia on his way to Toronto.

by NHfishercatsfan on Aug 4, 2010 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

Just a little.....

I feel bad being happy about an injury but…..I can’t wait to see him play….sometime next week, after Cito gets him acclimatized to the Majors by having him sit on the bench for a few days.

by Tom Dakers on Aug 4, 2010 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

can bat 10th? Or maybe Cito will DH him (can you DH someone outside of the pitcher?)

Glad to see him up. Also glad that Buck’s injury is seemingly minor. We don’t want him to slip out of his type B status.

by REMO on Aug 4, 2010 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup, it’s wrong to say yay. But I have to admit that was my first split-second thought too when I saw this. Hate to see guys injured and John Buck’s great, but I’m just antsy to get on with the future of our position players, and want to see guys like Buck and Overbay take a back seat so we can take a look at our likely 2011 options of Arencibia and Lind (at 1B!).

by jabalong on Aug 4, 2010 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I would recommend it

But Kevin Youkalis?!? Short of him being hit by a truck I won’t be feeling bad for him, and even then only slightly.

by IanJ on Aug 5, 2010 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Am I a bad man for kinda liking Youkilis?

He was on a show called Man vs Food, the host goes around doing eating challenges, it’s pretty cool. Anyway he’s a Yankees fan and he went to Boston to eat some giant burger and Youkilis was there and was just chirpin the guy, favourite line: “That’s how ya eat a burga, ya bum!” I was laughing so hard. Hate him as a Sox player but I find it hard to hate him after that.

by T_Mizz on Aug 5, 2010 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Youkilis might be a good guy, but I think most of the ‘hate’ is how he conducts himself as a ball player. The endless delays, constant arguments, faking HBP; all of these things make him very easy to hate as an opposition player. Which, I think, is a healthy way to approach it. People who extrapolate whoa guy is off the field from who they are on it are doing guess work, and it’s unfair on the player.

by dexfarkin on Aug 5, 2010 11:04 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd complain

He swings like a sally!

What's a green comment

and for that matter, what’s a “rec”?

by T_Mizz on Aug 5, 2010 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I am making a post on this tonight (Hopefully) but you see at the bottom of each comment there is a reply button (Obviously since you use it) next to that is an action button where you can rec (Recommend) a comment or flag it (as a troll or inappropriate etc).

When a comment receives enough recommends it becomes green so it is highlighted for people to notice, much like a recommend fanpost or fanshot gets bumped to the top of the list so its more noticeable for everyone. it is almost like the community self policing and promoting the best material.

Can we all agree that if using a short form for Arencibia, it be JPA?

Referring to him as JP always makes me cringe at the thought of the other JP.

I couldn’t agree more Tom. EE is the designated whipping boy around here and very few are willing to either give him a chance.

You would think he’s been acting like Rios last year or something. I honestly for the life of me don’t understand it. And the “solution” is always putting Bautista at 3B…who is WORSE defensively at 3B than EE.

Baffles me to no end.

Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

no kidding

Encarnacion’s contract: 2 yrs (2009 and 2010), $7.6 M (3.8 M/season), includes 0.85 M signing bonus

Encarnacion’s production: 2010: 243 PA, 0.9 WAR, value: $3.8 M

It’s fine to argue he’s a bit overpaid (though less the injury I really think he’d be worth the contract) and it’s certainly correct to say he’s not been nearly as good a Bautista, but at least according to UZR (sample size alert) he’s significantly improved his fielding this year and hasn’t been bad at all with the bat (.331 wOBA in spite of a .249 BABIP coupled with a 19% LD-rate).

But, yeah, cut him so that we can bring up a 24 year old Brad Emaus and his .227 / .319 / .355 MLEs from 2010. That’s only about 90 points of OPS.

For the record, I like Emaus and I really want to see him, but I don’t want to be our only option at third. Encarnacion is not an all-star, but he’s a decent enough stopgap until we know that Emaus is ready.

than Emaus and I see no reason to believe that he is yet

"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"

by jessef on Aug 6, 2010 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. EE has been very unlucky, and has been driving the ball, it just hasn’t been falling in. He’s been ASTRONOMICALLY better with the bat (even with that bad luck) than Hill and Lind, and yet they are deities and everyone just waits for them to pull out of it.

Cheer for the home team. It’s not like he’s acting like Rios. He’s taken all the lumps (including the ridiculous demotion to AAA) and has shown improvement in the field, and hasn’t said anything about hitting dead last in the lineup despite hitting better than a good number of the guys ahead of him.

Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

They better not be up until next year at the absolute earliest.

We happen to have some fairly good SPs and a very nice young SS as well, so let’s let them develop first.

We can't be letting those guys block them

We have many of those pitchers under control for a long time and Escobar’s under control through 2013, if we don’t see Hech and Drabek until 2014 I will flip my shit.
Long term, it’s probably Escobar at third because of his cannon. I see no reason why, if this is what the future looks like, the future shouldn’t start now.

by T_Mizz on Aug 5, 2010 8:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Escobar is right now a top 3 defensive SS in the MLB, and he can hit. Hech has played less than a full season of professional baseball.

Obviously Drabek will be up before then. Hech? Probably. Once he proves he can actually play they can think about moving him up.

Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

He's proving he can play in AA

He’s hitting .306 now at New Hampshire, and that includes his terrible start from the culture shock or whatever, learning a new language, being away from home in a new country alone, take your pick. Not to mention this is constantly going up, as his last 10 game batting average is now .349 and has been well above .300 for a long time now.
Now before you say “well that’s in double AA, call me when he does that in the big leagues”, how can he prove he’s ready if you don’t give him a chance.
I’m not saying bring him up yet, more of a pipe dream to see the future come together as soon as possible, but maybe in September if he continues to hit well in NH.

by T_Mizz on Aug 5, 2010 9:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Also

he’s already on a major league contract right? So if I’m not mistaken there’s no “if we bring him up we start the clock” type thing is there?

by T_Mizz on Aug 5, 2010 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Fair enough

Although it’s a very small sample size. I desperately hope he succeeds. But I have zero interest in moving Escobar from SS at this point. Escobar has been the MVP of his MLB team over a season, finished 20th in MVP voting for the NL, placed 6th in ROY voting, played spectacular defence, and hit well.

Obviously, all those things can be tweaked to say whatever you want them to say. And again, I hope Hech works. But right now, if Hech came up tomorrow, I am not moving Escobar for Hech. I’m moving Hech around Escobar.

I basically see no reason to rush Hech. And I think long term if he’s bumping anyone, it’s Hill from 2b, not Escobar from SS.

Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

by Jevant on Aug 5, 2010 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions

That's the question

Some people see it as Hill at third, Escobar at short and Hech at second but I think it could just as easily be the other way with Escobar at third, Hech at short and Hill staying at second.
Personally I love the idea of Escobar and Hech as the DP tandem. But, for some unknown reason, I have it in my mind that Hill doesn’t have the arm strength to play third, is there any truth to that? I really hope I just got that outta nowhere.

by T_Mizz on Aug 5, 2010 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions

And I seem to recall everyone raving about his cannon of an arm when he first was called up a few years ago.

by jonnybluejay on Aug 5, 2010 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I hope you're right

because now I’m becoming the biggest backer for the Hill at third escobar at short and hech at second, that infield’s looking good defensively. I mean the fact you’ve got 3 guys who can and have played short should mean they’ll all be at least solid defensively.

by T_Mizz on Aug 5, 2010 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Does this mean the end of the organizational HR race?

With all due respect to JPA, I can’t see him hitting nearly as many homers as Bautista in the majors. I mean exhibit A he’s only got fraction of the Beard Bautista has.

by T_Mizz on Aug 5, 2010 12:11 AM EDT reply actions

Probably not...

JPA’s numbers are from the PCL, where offensive numbers are inflated. And he probably won’t play as many games as Bautista.

And not just organizational HR race, it’s the affiliated pro ball HR race. There’s only one other person with 30+ HR in the minors (Paul Goldschmidt of the Visalia Rawhide of the California League, Adv A affiliate of the Diamondbacks).

I don't see JPA as a 40 homer guy

but 30 homers seems likely for him. He leads the PCL with 31 homers (2nd best is 26 i believe)… he has legit power… He hits for just as much power away from Vegas as he does at home too.

by ohmybosh on Aug 5, 2010 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

25-30HRs with gap power would be a fantastic contribution from a catcher. Personally, I think he’ll settle a little lower, but hopefully with a better OBP trending forward.

by dexfarkin on Aug 5, 2010 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions

25-30 HR is Mauer power (or at least last year it was)

20-25 HR a year, decent defence, and a decent batting average will get you invites to plenty of all-star games.

by siggian on Aug 5, 2010 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Indeed. With JPA, I’m thinking he’ll be more in the 20-ish range. He’s a big, strong guy, and has always been able to drive the ball. But he will only start 100-120 games, which you have to factor in.

by dexfarkin on Aug 5, 2010 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope to see JPA

As much as possible over the next couple of weeks. Personally, I’m a Cubs fan living in TO, who’s been getting away from the Jays lately, but this year, i’m drawn back by the excitement of the young players (Doesn’t hurt that my Cubs are a joke!!!!). When I watch the games I am so excited to see Snider, Lind, Hill, Escobar, Lewis, whereas the rest of the guys bore me, even Bautista. Sure, Bautista is playing great ball, but he’s not in the long term plans so I get a little bored, but watching the young arms and young bats, prepping for the future make it fun to watch the Jays. So here’s hoping we’ll see lots of JPA and I’d love to see anyone of the their prospects in September, no matter how far away he may be, even if just for a quick look. It’s fun to see that first swing from a new guy, or that first inning from a pitcher. I remember the first time Halladay ever pitched, I loved him right away.

All this buttoning and unbuttoning

by Marttisdad on Aug 5, 2010 12:16 PM EDT reply actions

Not to nitpick

Lewis is 2 months younger than Bautista, both only 29, they probably figure into the longterm plans in equal amounts.

by T_Mizz on Aug 5, 2010 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Any team that wants to contend needs to have a few veteran players. From what I’ve read, it seems that Jose has really taken to the leadership role, especially with the Latino players. As long as his batting doesn’t regress too badly (meaning he hits somewhere around 25 HR a season), I can see him on this team for two or three more years.

OK, I’ll confess that I’m beginning to drink the Jedi Kool-aid. It’s almost a full calendar year now.

by siggian on Aug 5, 2010 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh I agree

I think in four years the Jays are going to be a young exciting team, hopefully with good cost management and then either a couple of the older guys like Bautista or Wells will be around to be the veteran leaders, or maybe they will find that through free agency, and boom you got yourself an exciting team molded like the Rays.

I’m excited.

All this buttoning and unbuttoning

by Marttisdad on Aug 5, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

huh, didn't know that

I guess you’re right, I think maybe it’s that I’m more positive on Lewis, I’m enjoying what is happening with Bautista, but very afraid he is a flash in the pan, whereas with Lewis, he adds a different element that I want to see. He adds speed at the top of the lineup. I guess I see him doing this more effectively down the line than I see Bautista being a middle of the lineup masher.

Just an opinion of course, I could be really wrong, plus, Gose would I guess now be the long term answer for speed at the top.
