Minor League Recap: August 31
August ends without and waiver trades. Odds are slim that anything will happen in September. The Jays have recalled J.P. Arencibia and activated David Purcey. I'd imagine more players will be added once the PCL season ends.
Las Vegas beat Sacramento 4-2.
- Scott Richmond got the start: 6.0, 1 hit, 4 walks, 7 k, win. We'll likely see him next week in Toronto.
- Josh Roenicke: 1.0, 4 hits, 2 earned. 3.70.
- Jamie Vermilyea: 1.0, 3 hits. 4.91.
- Jeremy Accardo: 1.0, 2 hits, 1 walk, 24th save. 3.48.
- Manny Mayorson: 2 for 5, double, run. .350.
- Brad Emaus: 1 for 3, 2 RBI, walk, steal. ..297.
New Hampshire beat Harrisburg 1-0 in 10 innings.
- Clint Everts: 6.0, 4 hits, 1 walk, 4 k. 5.58.
- Trystan Magunson: 3.0, 1 walk, 3 k. 2.63.
- Alan Farina: 1.0, 1 k, win. 1-0, 1.56.
- David Cooper: 2 for 4. .252.
- Matt Liuzza: 3 for 3, HR, walk. .248. Walk off homer.
- Adeiny Hechavarria: 0 for 4. .278.
Dunedin beat Lakeland 4-3 in 10 innings.
- Ryan Shopshire: 5.0, 5 hits, 2 earned, 1 walk, 2 k. 3.38.
- Nestor Molina: 2.1, 4 hits, 1 earned, 2 k. 3.86. Just called up from Lansing.
- Matthew Daly: 1.0, 2 hits, 2 k. 30th save. 2.25.
- Marc Sobolewski: 2 for 5. ..259.
- Ryan Goins: 2 for 4, RBI. .207.
Auburn beat Mahoning Valley 3-1, scoring 2 in the 9th for the win. Just have to mention the Mahoning starting pitcher's name is Michael Goodnight. It could easily be worked into the Whose on First routine.
- Misaul Diaz: 4.0, 3 hits, 1 walk, 3 k. 1.00.
- Michael Kelly: 2.0, 1 hit, 1 walk, 3 k, win. 1-2, 2.45.
- Dayton Marze: 1.0, 2 hits, 1 walk, 2 k. 7th save, 2.96.
- Carlos Perez: 0 for 1, 2 walks, 1 run. .304.
- Lance Durham: 2 for 3, HR, 2 RBI, walk. ..258.
Lansing lost to Dayton 12-0, ruining what was almost a perfect day for the organization.
- Daniel Webb made his first Lansing start: 5.0, 7 hits, 6 runs, 3 earned, 1 walk, 2 k, loss. 5.40.
- John Del Campo: 2 for 4, double. .304.

Scott Richmond
He is 31 years old and doesn’t have a future with the Jays. I would rather see someone like Robert Ray or Brad Mills giving it a try with the big club. What do you think?
Richmond should be next year’s Brian Tallet in terms of role. He should be able to fill that role for 2 or 3 years, so he does have a future with the Jays, although limited in scope and time.
I don’t know about you but I hated Brian Tallet on the Jays starting rotation. I would rather have Brad Mills; who is 6 years younger than him to get spot starts for Morrow instead of Richmond. Next years starting rotation will probably look something like this:
Marcum
Romero
Morrow
Cecil
Litsch/Rzympski/Mills
I would love to see Richmond in the bullpen when Downs and Frasor leave the at end of this season. I just would prefer the Jays to have another young arm in their rotation next year instead of a 31 year old.

Richmond would be ideal in the Tallet role of long relief and the occasional spot start. If a starter goes on the 15 day DL or longer, then you call up a replacement. If a starter just needs to skip a start, then it should be Richmond. That’s how I see him being used.
I think Mills and Litsch end up being the core of the bullpen, although Litsch may take most of the season to finally get that role.
I really like the current Jays pen aside from Tallet and Gregg. I give Gregg all credit for somehow getting the job done, but having been spoiled by Henke and Ward, I like my closers to be domineering and have swagger. With Gregg, I’m always waiting for the other shoe to drop, even though it hasn’t happened too often. Tallet is utterly replaceable as shown by his current -1.6 WAR.
The other relievers are pretty good, although some of them are getting a little long in the tooth. I’d like to see a partial replenishment of the bullpen to get some younger arms. I don’t want a complete overhaul because these guys have been pretty reliable for quite a while now. (I give them a pass for last year as no bullpen could survive the decimation of the Jays starting pitching last year).
So I was watching the replay of Aroldis Chapman's perfect inning last night
And 2 thoghts popped into my mind:
1) Damn I wish we had gotten him.
2) It said he’s signed through 2015, which made me think, we signed Adeiny Hechavarria through 2014, but does that mean he becomes a free agent after that?
2a) If the answer to the previous question is yes, then why shouldn’t he be starting next season in Toronto?
Oh thank god
That’s good. So what is the deal then assuming he starts the 2012 season on the active roster? He will have two more years under his current contract, then another year of league minimum and then 3 years of arbitration?
