Even though he can become a free agent at the end of the season, John Buck will get a majority of starts at catcher for the Blue Jays during the remainder of the season rather than prospect J.P. Arencibia.

Good news.
I hope he gets a nice big contract for some other team, thats clearly the most important thing for our baseball team. That’s fine JPA probably won’t benefit from additional playing time, clearly he knows all he needs to know. Good decision Cito, I’m going to miss you next year.

Sorry, but you don’t turn your All-Star catcher into the backup for a rookie for the last month because he’s headed into free agency. I know it makes more sense on the development side, but the players simply wouldn’t take it.
It simply isn’t done, like stealing bases with a ten run lead.
Agreed
It would look bad on the organization.
Lewis/Snider is a completely different situation. And I won’t get into Johnny Mac.
But you simply can’t sit Buck for JPA. Good luck on attracting FAs to Toronto in the future. It sends the message of “hey, once we’re out of it, we’re just going to stop playing the veterans and hurt their chances of getting a job elsewhere”. And if the veteran is an All-Star…well, that would look ridiculous.
Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
to me that's over thinking it too much
John Buck wasn’t a highly sought after free agent. It isn’t like he had a lot of teams trying to sign him. And, if you are talking about free agents that aren’t playing well enough to get interest on the market, wouldn’t they be more interested in joining a team that took a player from being unwanted to becoming a All-Star. The amount that Buck plays in September won’t change his next contract.
IF it were up to me…I’d likely have them share the catching and the DH duties, play Lind at first as much as I can and have Travis play the outfield every day.
I just think it looks bad on the organization. But I hear you.
Also – Buck getting more playing time increases the compensation we can get for him, right?
Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
He is a B right now but what makes you think he is going to turn the arbitration down? He really wants to stay.
Come on, Rook. Show us that million-dollar arm, 'cause I got a good idea about that five-cent head of yours.

he's said he wants to play everyday
he won’t accept arb with JPA due to get at least half the at-bats next year.
You have a link to where it says JPA is going to get half his swings?

Elliot's article today
said that Arencibia would be the everyday starter next season, didn’t hedge at all. I’d be surprised if he made a statement like that without a basis.

Id rather hear it from AA over Elliot. Till then I wont assume.

AA said JPA was going to get the majority of starts when he came up for Buck earlier.
The difference this time is the person behind the bench is going to be hired by AA and is going to be held accountable to AA.
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
Johnny makes an excellent point

I totally agree

great news
Buck will get the majority of the starts in September, just like JPA got the majority of the starts when Buck was on the DL.
Overbay
JPA could see a lot of DH duties if Lyle’s non-concussion, concussion-like symptoms continue.
he's back in the lineup today
