Vernon Against Texas this Season
As many of our fans may have noticed, Vernon Wells has been playing very well against Texas this season. How well? Lets take a look at the Game Logs from Fan Graphs...
| Date | Team | Opp | AB | WPA |
| 04-May | TOR | @TEX | 4 | 0.315 |
| 04-Jul | TOR | @TEX | 3 | 0.276 |
| 04-Aug | TOR | @TEX | 3 | 0.235 |
| May-14 | TOR | TEX | 5 | 0.295 |
| May-15 | TOR | TEX | 4 | -0.067 |
| May-16 | TOR | TEX | 3 | -0.012 |
| 09-Jun | TOR | TEX | 4 | 0.297 |
| 09-Jul | TOR | TEX | 3 | 0.217 |
As you can see, those are some disgusting WPA numbers. Further Analysis after the jump.
His totals against Texas are pretty staggering.
| AB | WPA |
| 29 | 1.556 |
Especialliy staggering compared to his season totals.
| AB | WPA |
|
507 |
1.77 |
Vernon's stats this season, if you remove his output from against Texas, don't look so pretty.
| AB | WPA |
|
478 |
0.214 |
In fact, that WPA of 0.214 would put him below the likes of Wise and Overbay.
Looking at his percentages of his play vs Texas compared to the rest of the season...
| AB | WPA |
|
6% |
88% |
We see that he's accumulated almost 90% of his Win Share this season against the Rangers in about a twentieth of the at bats.
I don't really have a conclusion, other than it is kinda neat to see how a certain player can be really productive against certain teams over others.
As we approach the end of the season, I plan on making a few fan posts tracking the WPA of the Jays as they faired against certain opponents. Sort of like the Jay of the Day, only more like Jay of the Season Series. It will look at things like "How good was Cecil really againsts the Yankees?", "Who was really really bad against the Red Sox leading to our horrible record against them?", "Who did well in the Interleague games?", "Why were we so good against the Orioles?" and "What players on the other teams absolutely destroyed us this season."
Any comments or thoughts would be gretly appreciated as I begin to prepare the spreadsheets for the posts.

Odd
It appears that Fangraphs did not use a consistant game date method, and my Excel’s auto format played havoc on the game dates.
Oh, and this is my first Fan Post :)
There She Gooooooes!
Thanks
Ironically, I’m getting hitched in 2 days, and will be honeymooning for a week and a half, so I am not going to be online for a couple weeks. When I get back, I’ll be all over it.
There She Gooooooes!
Congratulations!
And save that stuff for the offseason. Bring us some Blue Jay articles to enjoy over the cold fall and winter to keep us going until spring training.
Noooo write on the honeymoon!
Trust me, the better half will love ya for it :)
Life as a Toronto Sports Fan?... *sigh*... It is what it is...
Actually
We are going to game on Saturday before we catch the flight to the Dominican. Yes, my honeymoon is starting with the Jays vs the Rays
There She Gooooooes!
At the Jays game last night
against Texas a guy proposed to his girlfriend on the Jumbotron…definitely gotta have guts to go that route.
Nice job on the Fanpost! I saw the title and almost dismissed it, but was glad to read it and see you utilizing some interesting data from fangraphs instead of rattling something off the top of your head. It really is an astonishing breakdown to have 88% of his WPA against one team!! I’d also be interested to see the breakdown of WPA performances for our slugger Bautista. I’d expect it to be much more spread out as he seems to homer in almost every series. Gotta say though, my favourite Bautista moment was probably that second homer of the game against the Yankee’s for his 40th of the year and staring down the pitcher after hitting that rocket! Best of luck going foward!
Small sample size but interesting,
especially with all the rumours of him wanting to play in Texas.

Vernon's Contract
With the contract he has, he is almost impossible to move.

He's always hit well in texas
That’s why we should trade him to the Rangers for Josh Hamilton and Cliff Lee.
We could throw in Hoffpauir to make the trade even.

This is actually very interested because Texas is known as a hitters park
so a lot of Wells’ production coming from games against Texas is a little concerning.
