Bargain Basement Shopping?
Just read a note on MLBTR about the remaining DH crop and it is still very intriguing. Any one of Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome or Vlad Guerrero would be a welcome addition to the Jays lineup in my opinion. And to a lesser degree I wouldn't mind seeing Damon, Branyan or Glaus here to.
I think AA realized back in October when the Manny Ramirez to Toronto rumours were flying around that there wasn't a huge market for aging DH's that can't play in the field so waiting out the market has probably brought the asking prices lower and they may continue to drop the closer to Spring Training we get. It would have been nice to add a bit bat with some defensive value but the Jays had options to who they could add and moving Bautista to 3B, Lind/EE to 1B and Davis, Snider, Wells in the OF isn't that bad if Manny, Thome or Vlad occupy the everyday DH spot on an incentive laden 1 year deal.
Personally, I like Vlad, Manny and Thome in that order for the Jays, what does everyone think? Will AA add a big bat before Spring Training? If so who?

I love Vlad, that big smile of his when he is swinging at balls that bounce before the plate makes me laugh everytime.
I think I go Manny/Vlad/Thome myself though.
I think Thome is going to be slightly more expensive and I think Manny and Vlad may be best bets.
Although I would have serious injury concerns with Vlad, I know he wouldn’t be playing the field but even just running the bases on the turf might wear on those knees of his at this point.

Manny – for the dreadlocks
Vlad – for Count Dracula
and Thome – ’cause if you have 16 Shawn/Sean/Shaun on your team, you got to have at least one Jim…

Worst case scenario:
We sign Johnny Damon as DH. Be our leadoff guy. He’s old, but gets on base at a good clip and scores runs. He’s also the “locker room presence” people want or need.
Whos asking for locker room presence?

Just "those people"
There’s always people that get a hard on for locker room presence and beyond the box score value. I just think he could be a productive hitter overall, even at age 93.
I do know how to rock an IPod.

JohnnyG does a great job
keeping the B^3 locker room loose. It helps counteract the clubhouse cancer that is Tom Dakers

I hope we get Chavez now. I didn’t even bring it up since we never appeared to have any interest in him, but apparently he’s worked out for us now. He’s an awesome defender at 3rd (when healthy), and I think he could really rock here if he could stay healthy, and we could potentially have another Scott Rolen-esque guy on our hands.
Failing that, I’m pulling for Thome (although, he’s hardly ‘bargain basement’).
For true bargain basement guys, I wouldn’t mind:
Joe Crede
Andy LaRoche
Jermaine Dye
Generally, guys that we could get on the cheap.
Andy LaRoche is awful at baseball. Joe Crede, meh. would be much happier with E5 (E3?) or JoBau. Dye has actually been remarkably productive considering his age but why displace Bautista, a top-5 in baseball hitter last season, or Snider, who is our best young hitter?
efficiency is nice (getting bang for your buck) but for winning it’s so much more important to have better players
Encarnacion's our DH, deal with it
I don’t think we’re going to pick up anyone who can’t play the field just because they held a “big bat” a few years back. Encarnacion is our DH and serves as an option at first and third; deal with it folks. Chavez is the kind of flier I expect management will take, Dye could be another- Bautista would be happy to give up his RF slot if he knew it was to add Dye to the mix. If Chavez stayed healthy 3/4 of the year he’d fill the spot more than adequately til Lawrie has learned how to play the position, and maybe garner something in a trade depending on where we’re at in the standings. I’d still like to see a trade for Gordon (KC) or something of that ilk. Crede or LaRoche, don’t bother
