Ugh
So, I was invited to a dinner to celebrate the shark fin ban in Toronto with a bunch of councillors etc but I didn’t think my dad would let me go so i didn’t ask. Turns out he would have let me :( Now I’m sad.

Why would your dad not have allowed you to go?

But I think he just wanted to annoy me.

I just wanted to meet Rob Stewart
And everyone else who worked on the ban because I’m involved on trying to ban it in Hamilton.
by Nadia on Oct 28, 2011 11:02 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
ohhh i see
might as well ask, what’s involved in getting shark fin? is it true that the sharks are caught, fins cut off and put back in the ocean?
Some are. But it’s impossible to tell once they’re dried.

Sharks are an endangered species in general
Finning has killed over 90% of the shark pop.
by Nadia on Oct 28, 2011 11:09 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I don't believe that number as it is stated.

I was wrong:
Some species have decreased over 90%
by Nadia on Oct 28, 2011 11:14 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
What I don't get is..
Instead of banning shark fin soup wouldn’t it make more sense to have some form of controlled fishing so that the population is sustainable? Isn’t that what happens with most other fish species?
I think the problem is the illegal fishing happening
in south america or somewhere like that

hell, it was happening off the Grand Banks for a while.
Canada impounded a foreign ship a few years back.
Honestly, I just watched the movie and have done a bit of research
I’m nowhere near an expert or anything
by Nadia on Oct 28, 2011 11:17 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
That's what happens most often
It’s waaay more efficient to just keep the fins on the boat. If you haven’t seen it, Sharkwater is an amazing documentary.

Boston makes a trade with the Leafs wins the Stanley Cup
St Louis makes a trade with the Jays, wins the world series.
I guess by extension whoever makes a trade with the Bills this year will win the superbowl.
Raycroft! I like the move. Falls inline with the push for youth and is a solution for the future. Trading Rask was unfortunate, but with Pogge and Raycroft only being 26, I think the TO goaltending future is a bright one. - Some guy from 2006
I hope lots of teams want to trade with the Jays this year.

I’ve not paid much attention to Jays in the past few years. I think I’m going to make a point of following closely next season. Last time I watched, Russ Adams was our up and coming superstar. I have no idea what’s going on right now other than headline tidbits I see in newspapers.
