Question Time.
Happy Thanksgiving!
The turkey is in the oven here and my son is home from Edmonton and I have a cousin visiting from England. Well, visiting slash job hunting. He is planning on moving here, he has 'landed immigrant status' and is planning moving his young family across the ocean.
Anyway, question for you all:
What one good MLB player would you not take on the Blue Jays and why?
Personally, it is easy, Jonathan Papelbon. I just totally dislike the guy. He's just such a (what Hugo-mom-friendly word can I put in here?) douchbag (is that one word or two?). Add in that I wouldn't want my team paying that much for a closer.
Any, who wouldn't you want on the Jays?

The guy is such a terrible human being. He has proven multiple times that along with being a dirt bag he’s also a huge liar and juts all around horrible person. I would unable to cheer for him. I also wouldn’t want Josh Lueke from Seattle because he’s a rapist.

I wasn’t sure if Lueke really qualifies because he isn’t exactly a “good MLB player” but i did want to tack him at the end. Gotta include the rapist on list of players i don’t want on the Jays. I do find it strange that when Seattle traded for him, they didn’t know he was a rapist.

if he posts 6 WAR in 500 PAs
that’s fine with me. and oh yeah, definitely the first time that a player has ever focused on his own personal stats. you know that in the history of the MLB, no player batting .299 on the last at-bat of the season has ever drawn a walk in his last PA? you can infer that that’s because they want their baseball card to say .300 hitter on the back
John Kruk retired after he got to a career .300 mark. It was like the bottom of the 4th when he quit.

On July 30, 1995, in a game at Baltimore’s Camden Yards stadium, Kruk singled and retired standing on first base, taking himself out of the game never to play again.3 He is believed to be the only player to officially retire mid-game.

Nobody said it was a despicable action on par with rape. The question was ‘what good player would you not want on the blue jays and why?’. Reyes’ vanity is a perfectly acceptable reason to not want him on the Blue Jays.

Instead of swinging for the fences which he is apparently quite capable of doing? While not defending Reyes’ decision to sit out meaningless games in order to cement his own personal success, I don’t think it’s the first time someone put themselves ahead of their team.

You can disregard my below comment then. I still think a lot more players than you think would do the same, were they in the situation to do so (win a batting title) in similar circumstances (not playing for anything, free agent, etc)

how do we know it was entirely Reyes' doing?
Mark Eichhorn was offered to pitch 5 innings in the last game of the season purely so he could qualify for the ERA title (he declined but i don’t know why, so I will concede that not every player is Jose Reyes, maybe). All I’m saying is we don’t know the circumstances in Reyes’ exiting the game. The Mets weren’t playing for anything and if they re-sign Reyes it’s a good advertising point that he won the batting title

I’m a little amazed that this debate is even happening. There is no right or wrong answer to the question posed by Tom, Jose Reyes’ vanity is an acceptable reason to not want him on the Blue Jays.
by scrambles the death dealer on Oct 10, 2011 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Sorry, I'll elaborate
It is likely that most major league players are quite egotistical. However, the presence of a vain mind isn’t a yes/no situation, there is a continuum of ego within major league players. It seems to me that Reyes is at the higher end of this scale.
by scrambles the death dealer on Oct 10, 2011 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions
its your opinion and you're entitled to it
But we’re also entitled to discuss or criticize it if you post it on a public forum. You’ve swayed me a little by showing it was Reyes’ idea, but I still think plenty more players would do the same, only they’re never in that position to begin with

Right
you don’t get much more vain than Ted Williams (look up what he used to do during batting practice) and he risked officially batting .400 (I think he was hitting .3995 or something) by playing both ends of a doubleheader on, I believe, the last day of the season in 1941

No, this does not follow the same logic as everyone running around killing each other, or everyone jumping off a bridge. Sitting out after getting to .300 violates neither the letter nor the spirit of any rule of the game.

Can anyone else see a big breakdown from this guy? Maybe not next season or the next, but geez, how many innings will he have thrown by his 35th birthday? Or how many more pounds can he put on that big frame of his?
Would sign him in a heartbeat and buy him a triple bacon cheeseburger to seal the deal..
Big pitchers don’t fall apart quite like you’d think they would.. Colon was quite effective this year. Not saying he wasn’t crap in between, but he was never consistently top 5 over a half decade+

Tough to tell how CC will age, because there are very few his size in the league.
David Wells went years longer than I thought he would, but then he isn’t quite in the same weight class as CC but was a big guy.
I blog, therefore I am.
Jeter, ARod, Posada and Jones are all on the downside of their careers...
…so I don’t consider them to be significant candidates.
Reyes – to injury prone to pay the money he’d likely get
Fielder – will be on the downside of his career in 2-3 years
Papelbon – I agree with Tom,
…but the guy at the top of my list:
AJ Pierzynski – I despise him. I can’t really put my finger on it, but there is something about him that bugs the cr*p out of me.
Here’s a thread idea: What Blue Jay player do/did you find it hardest to cheer for. In my case it was Roger Clemens. I could never stand him and it peeved me royally when the Jays acquired him.

I dunno. A-Rod's probably the bigger douche.
Jeter’s never:
1) Had a painting of him done up as a Centaur
2) Yelled “I Got It” on a pop up
3) Slapped the ball out of the glove like a bratty kid when he was tagged
4) Opted out of his contract during the middle of the World Series
From what I’ve read, Jeter’s done a lot of charity work out of the spotlight and actually sat down with the kids and talked to them unlike A-Rod.
There was that Free Agency mess from last year and (from my understanding but not really sure based on conjecture from gossip websites) be the source for a very large Herpes outbreak in Hollywood… based on the women he’s dated.

If a good player is coming to my team, I take them if they make my team better. I’d have A-Rod at 3B, Jeter at SS, Pedroia at 2B, Youkilis at 1B and Papelbon closing if it means my team is in contention. I’d have Satan himself patrol CF for another World Series win.
I’m not a hypocrite here either. I hated Roger Clemens’ guts when he was with the Red Sox but loved him on the Jays, then hated him again when he was a Yankee. Almost nobody is worse than Rocket Roger.

Heh, yeah, I'm not crazy about Jeter at SS either
My point was more that if it was a winning team I don’t care what it looks like. The Yankees still win despite Jeter’s defensive shortcomings, I might add. It’s ok though, Satan’s defense in CF more than makes up for the defensive runs Jeter gives up on my team of the damned.
