Blue Jays Roster Moves

     The press release:

The Toronto Blue Jays have added C TRAVIS d'ARNAUD, 1B MICHAEL MCDADE, RHP NESTOR MOLINA and LHP EVAN CRAWFORD to the 40-man roster. RHP ANDREW CARPENTER was claimed on waivers from the San Diego Padres, while C BRIAN JEROLOMAN was claimed on waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates and RHP COLE KIMBALL was claimed on waivers by the Washington Nationals. Currently the club now has 38 players on the 40-man roster.

(see after the jump for more details)

Star-divide

d'ARNAUD, 22, led the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (AA) to an Eastern League Championship and captured league MVP honours after posting a .311 average with 21 home runs and 78 RBI. The right-handed hitting catcher earned mid-season and post-season All-Star selections and was also honoured with the R. Howard Webster award winner as the MVP of the club.

McDADE, 22, was an Eastern League mid-season All-Star selection at New Hampshire (AA). The 6-1, 225 lb Las Vegas native posted a .281 average with 16 home runs and a club leading 37 doubles. The 37 doubles ranked the switch-hitting first basemen 3rd in the Eastern League.

MOLINA, 22, in his third season after converting to a pitcher and first as a full time starter, combined to go 12-3 with a 2.21 ERA between Dunedin (A) and New Hampshire (AA). In 130.1 innings, the Venezuela native fanned 148 batters while walking just 16 earning selections to both the mid-season and post-season All-Star squads.

CRAWFORD, 25, was a key member of the championship winning New Hampshire bullpen, recording a 3.35 ERA in 45 relief appearances, including 62 strikeouts in 51.0 innings. The Pensacola, Florida native was an 8th round selection by the Blue Jays in 2008 draft.

CARPENTER, 26, appeared in six games for the Padres in 2011, recording an 8.44 ERA in 5.1 innings. The Grant Pass, Oregon native spent the majority of the season at Lehigh Valley (AAA), posting a 5-1 record with a 1.79 ERA in 34 games. The 6-3, 240 lb right-hander was originally selected in the 2nd round pick by the Phillies in the 2006 draft.

Tom here: I'll add more when I have time.

Update:

I hope Kimball enjoyed his few days with the team. He didn't even get to model the new uniform. I'm slightly sad about losing Jeroloman, but the best he was going to become was a backup catcher. I'm a little surprised they thought they had to protect McDade, I can't imagine any team taking him in the Rule 5 draft. Or Crawford for that matter. d'Arnaud would have been grabbed by someone and likely Molina as well.

Short version

It exists to prevent teams from stockpiling young talent, keeping them in the minors, and not giving them a shot at major league opportunities.

Basically, players who where 18 and under when they signed can’t be claimed for the first 4 Rule 5 drafts and players who were 19 and older can’t be claimed for the first 3 Rule 5 drafts from the time they first sign. So for 2011, this generally means high schoolers drafted in 2007, college players drafted in 2008, and internation free agents signed in 2006/07 (depending when they signed)

To prevent a player from being claimed, the team has to add him to the 40 man roster. Anyone not on the 40 man who meets the above criteria is subject to the draft, which occurs in December (reverse order of winning). A claim costs $50,000 and the player has to stay on the Major League roster for the entire year or be offered back.

another quick Rule 5 Draft question/clarification

adding a player once to the 40 man roster doesn’t permanently eliminate their Rule 5 eligibility, right?

As an example, say McDade (who would have been Rule 5 eligible if he wasn’t just added to the 40 man) stays in the minors all year this year and is removed from the 40 man roster before next offseason, perhaps to clear room for other, better players who are more likely to be claimed. He would then become Rule 5 eligible again next year, and could be selected by other teams – correct?

I realize that for this to happen, he would have to clear waivers and so would have already been exposed to other teams for pickup, but I wanted to clarify my understanding of the draft rules.

Interesting question

I wasn’t sure as a technical matter, so that’s good to know.

Has to stay on the 25-man roster all season
If chosen in the Rule 5 draft, a player must be kept on the selecting team’s 25-man major league roster for the entire season after the draft—he may not be optioned or designated to the minors

That hurts a player’s development sometimes. For example, in the case of Jose Bautista he couldn’t play in the minors when he was claimed in the Rule V draft, but wasn’t yet ready for the majors.

Kimball era was brief

He didn’t even get to try on the new threads

I've made it a habit to collect these

Unfortunately, they already have him on the Nats site (but still with the Jays hat and background).

Weird moves with Kimball

Guess they figured Washington needed the roster spot and so they could sneak him though.

The corollary I suppose is they liked him enough to get him and try to sneak him through, but not enough to occupy a 40 man spot until the spring.

by MjwW on Nov 18, 2011 4:04 PM EST reply actions

or they felt his injury would be far too long to be worth it and pretty much made a swap.

They may have preferred

Andrew Carpenter because he is healthy.

Aww

And I wanted to watch the Kimbrel doppelganger.

Do you think the Jays cut a deal with Washington for another prospect.

by jensan on Nov 18, 2011 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

I think that’s very unlikely. Sounds like the Kimball acquisition was trying to catch lightning in a bottle.

by PaulverizeAll! on Nov 18, 2011 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

But with low-cost and low-risk, of course.

Kimball's future...

Can the Jays claim Kimball back if he doesn’t stay on the Nationals roster for the entire year – as per the rule outlined above? If so, he isn’t necessarily lost to the Jays, since they’d have first dibs if he doesn’t stick with the Nationals, right?

by brotherk_13 on Nov 18, 2011 6:46 PM EST reply actions

The Rule 5 Draft is seperate

The Rule 5 Draft only involves players not on the 40 man roster.

Kimball was already on the Washington 40 man – they wanted to take him off and send him to the minors, so they had to send him through waivers (where any team can claim him and put him on their 40 man). The Jays claimed him, then the Jays tried to do the same thing Washington did and Washington claimed him back.

If Washington tries to take him off again, he’ll have to go through waivers, where any team can claim him (there’s a priority list). If no one claimed him, then he’d be outrighted to the minors. Then theoretically, next year, if he hadn’t been added back to the 40 man, any team could select him in the Rule 5 draft.

Rule V

Remember. Chances are good that Jeroloman is back with the Jays at some point. The Pirates could also work out a trade if they can’t keep him in the bigs all season. He could also end up like Emaus and be traded to another team if he returns.

He wasn't a Rule 5 selection

just a waiver claim, so he only has to stay on the 40 man roster.

Check yoself before you rec yoself.
