Around SBN: Why We're Skeptical Of LeBron James

Santa's List

Santa, if you haven't already decided, here are some suggestions:

Brett Lawrie: No baseballs off the fingers or wrist.

Brandon Morrow: An ERA that matches his xFIP.

Dustin McGowan: 30 + starts.

Yunel Escobar: Again more smiles.

Jose Bautista: Give him whatever he wants.

J.P. Arencibia: Progression.

Mike McCoy: No more flights to Vegas.

Adeiny Hechavarria: A bat that matches his glove.

The Bullpen: Fewer blown saves.

Travis Snider: 500 major league at bats.

Tim Raines: The same we asked for last year: a plaque in the Hall of Fame. Last year we asked for plaques for him, Bert Blyleven and Roberto Alomar. 2 out of 3 isn't bad, but Tim is deserving.

Brett Cecil: A couple more MPH.

Kyle Drabek: A map to the strike zone.

Kelly Johnson and Colby Rasmus: A bounce back.

John Farrell: Never to have to write Nix or Patterson on a lineup card again.

Edwin Encarnacion: Few error, more homers.

Alex Anthopoulos: The ability to ignore 'writers' with sources. And no one asking for a no-trade

Adam Lind: His swing from 2009.

Dirk Hayhurst: Another best seller.

Aaron Hill and John McDonald: Our thanks.

Henderson Alvarez: To do as well for the Jays as he did last year, but in about 3 times as many starts.

Ricky Romero: More of the same.

Bud Selig: The same think we ask every year, retirement. Please

Me: As always, more time with my boys. And to be allowed to play in this sandbox for another year.

For all of us: Health and a season as fun as last year, just more wins for the Jays.

Add in any more that you feel are appropriate.

I'll tell you why

-Stone face (doesn’t look at all comfortable in front of a camera)
-Awful suits (sometimes I feel like he’s trying to be the don cherry of baseball)
-Questionable Baseball opinions (this needs no explanation)
-Unnecessary Joe Mauer comments (can’t chirp a guy whose career avg is 70+ points higher than your own)

I do however respect how he played for the jays in his time here. Not the most talented guy, but played hard baseball. I just think he takes away more than he adds to the Jays as an analyst.

And the 2005-08 ones as well. It gets forgotten in light of the big power 2009 season, but he was a very good hitter and very good defesnively before that.

Tim Raines

Do you think Raines is being held out because of his role in the Pittsburgh Baseball Trials and the embarrassment the revelations about his heavy cocaine usage while playing brought to MLB? While we point to guys from the steroid era as being questionable for the hall of fame do you think that having done so much cocaine while playing allowed Raines to play at a higher level then had he been sober, especially considering his aggressive style of play? This is a guy that testified in ‘85 under oath that he consumed so much cocaine while playing that he kept a vile in is sock at all time which is why he always slid head first. I myself have always had mixed feeling about his Hall of Fame eligibility because of this and i wonder if other voters have the same reservations which is why we haven’t’ seen him elected yet. Although i supposed if Willie Stargell is in the hall of fame it’s not really fair to keep Raines out as both did heavy amounts of amphetamines and cocaine during their playing careers. What do you guys think?

by Sean Coleman on Dec 24, 2011 12:34 PM EST reply actions

Yeah the cocaine thing is costing him

But then Molitor used and he got in, I’m not sure why the double standard.

Rains had season that were better then any put up by Lou Brock. He will get in some day, but he is defiantly being punished for being the face of the cocaine era (his nickname probably doesn’t help either). As a side note, i’m not sure if anybody else has been following the recent arrest of NFL receiver Sam Hurd but with the allegations that are coming out from that, i suspect the NFL is going to be engulfed in the same type of scandal. However with the current 24 hour tabloid news frenzy that we have, what the NFL is going to see will blow the Pittsburgh Drug Trials out of the water. apparently Hurd had dozens of current NFL players as clients and if their names come out, its going to rock the NFL (and especially the Dallas Cowboys).

So many crazy injuries.

Culter breaks his thumb on an interception because Knox fell down. Knox lost the ball last week and almost got paralyzed trying to get it back. It sucks.

Fergie Jenkins

Drugs delayed Fergie Jenkins getting in, but ultimately stats won out.

I think it will go down in the same way for Raines. Wonder why Molitor didn’t get the same treatment. I’m not accusing the media of being racist, but you’ve got to at least ask the question…

I never quite understood, while he re-tweeting “Signore”, why a minor league coach would have a clue about the front office bidding on a player when clearly almost no one else in the etire organization had a clue (hence the lack of leaks).

their stadium is terrible...

And at least their fans will still be relatively close to the team when it moves. I do find it sad however that a team with such a rich history is being moved even if only 1 hour away however with 3x the population a move to St. Jose will help them compete with the Angels and Rangers in the AL West. During the strike of ‘95, TSN showed a lot of games from the Athletics dynasty in the 70’s and did they ever have one hell of a team from ‘72 -’74.

Foul territory is ridiculous

Glad that’s going away.

I wonder what quirks Beane will have them build into the new stadium to give his team the edge. Maybe somehow make his RPs look really good and then trade them for the top prospects of playoff fighting teams.

A couple more

Hitters: with two strikes, it would be nice to see a more consistent approach to grinding out the AB.
Bullpen: fewer walks (and defined roles please).
Bench: here’s hoping the 5 (yes 5) players on the bench can contribute daily.
Rajai Davis: improved OBP and stealing a base or two to setup the go ahead run.
Mark Teahen: a return to the guy with > .700 OPS
Jeff Mathis: hitting above the Mendoza line in one or two games a week along with showing JPA how to “frame” a pitch.
Everyone: a safe and happy new year and keep sharing.

Years ago we went to a game in Oakland

they had a special on ticket prices, and we wanted to sit behind the outfield wall. The tickets were $1.40 each. The game went extra innings. The A’s won in the bottom of the 14th. We watched baseball for a dime an inning.

Jesse Litsch

A chance to get out of the bullpen and prove he belongs in the rotation, because, hey, it’s not as if we have a solid one-to-five or anything.

by CuseJay on Dec 27, 2011 12:20 PM EST reply actions

I think Litsch has just as much of a chance of being a good back-end starter

as McGowan, Cecil or Drabek do. He should certainly be given a shot in the spring.

by SuckaMD on Dec 27, 2011 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

He's had his shot

On multiple occasions over the past couple years, and he consistently gets injured. And when he’s healthy, he’s not been very good. I think the pen is best for him, as it was ultimately for Janssen

by MjwW on Dec 28, 2011 12:55 AM EST up reply actions

I think you're probably right

but it’s hard to let that great age-24 season of Litsch’s slip away

by benk on Dec 28, 2011 9:34 AM EST up reply actions

At some point though, you just have to accept that it was more of a pleasant anomoly than representive of his true talent level (and/or ability to stay healthy – I think this is related).
