First off, I want to say HI - long time reader of Bluebird Banter, but this is my first post. Also I'm a long time Blue Jays fan from Saskatchewan.
I'm posting beacuase I'm shocked at the differing opinions regarding signing Prince Fielder. I think it is a total no-brainer. Signing him only costs Rogers $$$, and as we all know, Rogers has PLENTY. There are no salary cap considerations. The Jays keep ALL their prized prospects. Combining him with Bautista will improve BOTH players, and also allow flexibility with Lind / Encarnacion and the marginal "potential" players Thames and Snider.
Fielder is young, superbly durable, and unquestionably and consistently productive. He has missed 8 games in the past 5 years. He would provide unbelievable support for Bautista who has had none, and is one of baseballs best hitters. Here are some numbers:
Honestly, besides Rogers, who really cares about the money. There is NO CAP. Rogers has the Fielder cash in the office slush fund. And most importantly, the Jays don't have to overspend in PROSPECTS, the only currency that can't be simply replaced. Keeping the stable of prospects is key for this team going forward.
Signing Fielder makes the Jays a STRONG contender for at least a wildcard if not the division as the prospects mature or are used as currency. Whats left of FA pitching isnt worth the ransom.
Spend the money AA / Rogers.
