Carlos Delgado
Just because the offseason has hit a lull I thought I'd throw this out there. I read in the Star Mr. Carlos Delgado is preparing for a comeback this year. He has in no way shape or form been linked to the Jays, but of course I got wondering. Would you want to see Carlos back in a Jays uniform next season? Make him the full time DH and maybe backing up Lind at first the odd time, he would be a good clubhouse leader, a big left handed bat off the bench and give the writers something to use a little ink on. Just a thought. I know we are trying to go younger, faster, cheaper, but thought I'd throw it out there and get some input on a SuperBowl hangover day.

Do you like this story?

Yes! (Only on the cheap of course)
I would love this purely from a marketing standpoint. The chase for 500, history with the team, etc. The leadership he brings to the table is also intriguing considering he could help out Snider even more and possibly help Jedi mentor Escobar as well.
It's good to love to win but it's better to hate to lose.
Not another Doug Gilmour Please
I hope Delgado does make it back to the bigs, and it would be wonderful for it to happen in a Jays uniform. However, the image of Doug Gilmour crawling off the ice in his big return to Toronto still hurts to think about. Rarely the return of a super star in the twilight of their career ends with a story book ending. (with the exception of Michael Jordan)
Delgado is one of the greatest Jays ever, and that’s how I want to remember him as a Jay. I wish him luck and would love to see him get to 500, but not at the risk of seeing him being a broken down player as Jay limping around the bases.

Maybe... but
Fernandez wasn’t out of the game for almost 2 years when he came back.

Leadership role??
That would be something new for him. He’s never been a clubhouse leader. But it would be interesting to see the Jays offer him a minor league contract.
Based on what?
Pretty bold statement. I’d like to hear the basis for it.
Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
He was called out for lack of it when playing for the Mets.
Different sports radio personalities were wondering where he and the other veterans were when the team was struggling. Wright was the one answering all the tough questions.
I had never seen him as a leader when with the jays. Can still remember him causually jogging around the bases in a game against Tampa and Martinez going ballistic. Should have scored. Cost us the game. His response afterwards…. “whats he gonna do, bench me”. Not exactly what I would call leadership qualities either in actions or words.
Martinez going ballistic
But you must admit that seeing Buck in a state of apoplexy might be worth it…
;-p

One more... That's how I remember him...

Now that bubble IS going to burst when he sees Carlos trotting the bases…

If healthy, I don’t see the harm in having him compete for at bats with EE and Lind. It’s not as though there is no room on the bench. I wouldn’t guarantee him in at bats though.
Might not be worth it though. You could risk tarnishing his image. And it would be hard to keep him on the bench. Look at how the Cito thing turned out.
I don’t think it should be hard keeping him on the bench as a pinch as probably no-one is going to guarantee everyday playing time for him.
I believe a guy like Delgado (assuming he’s still got something left in his tank) might be useful as a pinch-hitter, especially if there is an injury that will get Johnny-mac playing everyday.
And I must repeat my “Carlos is Michael Vick’s BFF” anagram:
CARLOS DELGADO = Dog sold a race

Wouldn’t
Race a sold dog
make more sense?

You can't race a dog after you sold him, Johnny!
,
that would be agains the LDBPA* rules!

I think he would be on a minor league contract. I like him in that scenario. Sometimes players his age have a season or 2 left in them even after missing a season. Frank Thomas 2006 season in Oakland comes to mind. The A’s paid him $500K for 39 HR and 114 RBI at age 38.

I made a suggestion like this on Baseball Fever a couple of years ago
Carlos would put butts in seats in a chase for 500.
I dont know about that.

let me rephrase that:
Carlos would putbutts inseats ina chase for500.
We could always hire him to wear ayellow shirt and make the simple fans (like me, up in the 500s) happier…

i'm not sure which would happen first
butts in seats, or delgado’s butt falling off
To Infinity. And BEYOND!!!

I bet on Vlad’s knees staying at 1B when he tries to “hustle” to 2B…

If 33,000 will show up to watch a manager retire ...
Then yes, Carlos would get Torontonians out to games.
Opening day does well too….

Tom ... you really don't think the people of Toronto like Carlos?
Enough to come out to games on the chance of seeing him play?
Maybe for his last game, like Cito’s.
But during the year? If they aren’t winning and in a playoff position, I doubt it

If he is healthy and signs a minor league contract wouldn’t he make sense?

I'd be fine with that
seems “if he’s healthy” is a very large ‘if’ though. as well, whose at-bats do you want to take away? Rivera would be fine, but you’re probably taking away from Lind and E5 too
If he is in the minors, there isn’t anyone significant that he is taking bats away from. If Delgado does well and there are no injuries at the mlb level, then you have that problem but it is a good problem.

that's fair
I wouldn’t mind a MiLB deal in that case. but it would kind of be disappointing if he struggles in the Minors and never gets back up with the Jays…
I don't know
there might be a curiosity factor that would get people out to a few games, but the only way people would come out and see him much is if he turned out to be good. And I think the odds against that are very long. But if all it would cost is a minor league contract, sure.
He would have to prove to me he was healthy before I signed him.
Right now, from what I’ve read, he doesn’t look all that healthy
I go to about 5-8 games per year on my schedule
If Carlos with back with the team I would be finding time to jump that number much higher.
Even if he batted like Frank Thomas did in his second year before we cut him loose?
