Jays Pick Up Jayson Nix From Indians
In a cash deal the Jays get Jayson Nix. Nix didn't have a good spring the the Indians, batting a big .176 in 12 games. To make room for him the Jays moved Jesse Carlson to the 60-day DL.
His career numbers are here. He has hit .215/.283/.380 in 3 seasons, totaling 218 games. He has played all the infield spots, other than first and the corner outfield spots in the majors.
He will be taking Patterson's spot on the opening roster, it looks like Corey will be starting the season on the DL. The bench now is Molina, McDonald, McCoy and Nix.

Hopefully he never plays.
Jose Bautista has a higher midi-chlorian count than you do.

Wow Tom you're fast!
I shouldn’t be surprised by now should I?

Such a weak bench
So if any one of our top guys goes down we have one of Mcdonald McCoy or Nix playing every day?
Is there no one better that we can grab? Ryan Church maybe I don’t think he is signed.
According to mlbtraderumors he is not signed, but at this point by the time he was ready Paterson would probably be ready too…or Pods.

Lastings Milledge?
Is he a free agent still?
If it's only a benchwarmer for a week till Cory Paterson is ready to come back,
can we get Randy Ruiz back from Japan? That’s a good guy who could use an MLB paycheque, and he is already familiar with the club. Probably not in game shape yet, though.
Why not keep Thames up for a week instead?
He is a better bat and can be the 4th OF until patterson gets back
Agreed.
Why not bring Thames up instead?

They’d have to put him on the 40 man roster and burn an option to send him back down.

Please, Travis, do not get hurt…Picking between PMoD and McCoy to play LF for while would be death.

the doctors want him to take a week before going back to playing
Just to be careful apparently

That's a pretty weak bench...
Wow, let’s hope we don’t need a pinch hitter anytime soon.
I hate doing this kind of thing, but oh well, wouldn’t a guy like Nolan Riemold make a whole lot of sense all of a sudden on this team? I know he’d actually cost the team something but he doesn’t look like he can get on with the Orioles, and he at least has the potential to be a good hitter and the Jays suddenly have like 600 at-bats to give away at DH.

we have 600 at bats to give away?

Did you miss the news today that Juan Rivera is now the DH?

And he'll do just fine as the DH
Maybe need to look just a little past sabermetrics and see that maybe, just maybe, he’s a decent hitter, and will do ok there.
have u ever seen juan rivera hit?
into the mashed potateos
Yeah saw him in Florida, was terrific.
Only hitting .404 on the spring. He might not be Albert Pujols but he isn’t awful.
i agree. people will be pleasantly suprised with rivera
professional hitter
into the mashed potateos
No, I have rarely, if ever, seen Juan Rivera hit but unless he hits like he did in 2009 there isn’t going to be much of surprise, he just hasn’t been a good hitter in two of the last three seasons. I don’t need to watch all of his at-bats in that time to be able to say that.
And, not trying to be a prick, but really, what does professional hitter even supposed to mean anyways? They are all, by definition professional hitters. Does Rivera also play the game the right way, too?

I'm good with Rivera at DH.
I think he’ll do well, ala the 2009 season you mention. I’d be a big fan of that from our DH position.
so u just put negative comments about a guy you've never seen?
real smart. maybe anthopolus should start managin that way too. im sure your blog is full of good insight. nice attitude, spread doom and gloom.
and actually by definition they are all professional “baseball players” by the way. “professional hitter” is a baseball saying, given to a player who shows above average professionalism in his trade. and like i was saying this is what you will get from rivera.
into the mashed potateos
Just To Add
Pitchers in the American League aren’t professional hitters either ;)
Yes professional hitter means he does some of the little things that don’t show up in the box score. Moving the guy along when needed, key sac flys, putting the ball in play etc.
well put. i was just trying to prove "professional hitter" wasnt a term i just made up
you can see a difference in a rivera at-bat compared to a encarnacion at-bat. or a snider at bat from 2 years ago compared to now. some hitters show potential, professional hitters use their whole potential.
into the mashed potateos
I never said you made the term up, I hear it all the time and sounds like the same tag that gets thrown on guys like being “gritty” to make up for their other quantifiable short comings.

but those things show up in the box score
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Doom and gloom? Really, I said he’ll be a poor DH. And you really think I’m the only one who analyses players based on their stats without actually watching substantial amounts of their at-bats?
How many Blue Jays fans are ready to anoint Brett Lawrie as the second coming because they saw him hit in a spring training game a dozen times on tv this spring? More or less the same thing, I’m sure at some point I’ve seen Rivera bat a dozen or so time in his career but I trust his stats a lot more than what I may or may not remember of him as a hitter.

Rivera may not be great
But I see no reason he can’t be decent as a DH. As a DH he’ll be able to stay healthy and hit around 25 HR, which is respectable for the position.
Take it easy everyone!
So the bench looks a little threadbare right now. But they are only there for the odd plate appearance, everyone we want playing everyday is healthy. Chances are they stay that way for a good while. Then we get either Pods or Pats back and our bench looks like we expected it to! I appreciate no one is thrilled seeing EE back at third, but AA and JF would not make the move unless they believed it was best for the team, right?
So roll on opening day! I think our beloved bluebirds will be turning some heads!

He's probably better than McCoy, given the fact that he has HR power
and that’s who he’ll eventually replace. It’s a meh move.
I'll take the opposite approach.
I think he’s a short term solution until Patterson is ready to go, and then he’ll designated or outrighted. I don’t know if he’s any better than McCoy (don’t see it), so I’d stick with McCoy.
ee will hold 3rd base nicely till brett lawrie

Why would we do this?
Everyone knows we’ve had no luck trading for 15 HR hitting utility players.

Chuckles
I’m picking Rajai to be our next Bautista actually… seems to enjoy the hitting philosophy.
Agree Nix is probably a short term until we get the rest back and then will be optioned.
by LimeyJaysFan on Mar 30, 2011 4:09 AM EDT up reply actions
kinda interesting
Match up Bautista’s 2008 numbers with Nix’s in 2010 and very similar. Both journeymen, both 28. Aside from BB differential. Perhaps Murphy works his magic and we have picked up another castoff from a horrible team for nothing.
cause he isn't ready
pretty simple, just had to watch him for a bit and I could see that he wasn’t ready to play third.
Which is not to say we won’t see him soon, He is making leaps and bounds in his progress at 3rd.
