Joe Mauer switching positions?

One of my good friends and I were talking about this during our last opera sitzprobe (What the heck is that? It's where all the singers in the show sit in front of the orchestra with the conductor and try to figure out tempos, changes, cuts, etc.) - What if the Twins moved Mauer to the infield. We were thinking 3B. IMHO, when healthy, Mauer is a great all-around player. Then we started talking about the grind that playing 3B can have on the body. Maybe due to his previous injuries, he may not be able to play up to standard.
What do you guys think? I thought the article above mentioned something very interesting regarding the amount of money spent on him compared to his production. Do you buy into the Joe Mauer hype? Could he play another position?

I think he would either move from 3B to 1B, and I think he is capable of doing it as he is very athletic.
They do not want to keep him at catcher though because it could end up hurting his body in the end, so a position change would be good, I just don’t know the Twins organization would switch his position.
If he moves he'd probably go to 1B or LF because of his knees
but his bat will play anywhere

They already have a pretty good player at 1B – doubt that he’ll ever play there with the Twins…

I'd be curious to see what Morneau looks like in the outfield.
His midi-chlorian count is through the roof!

if his knees are the question then moving morneau is a small price

Except then you’re moving a guy that is a career plus defender (5.7UZR/150) and +18 / +23.7 over the past two years. It’s counter productive. If Mauer’s knees are the issue, then put him at DH, especially to finish the season.

woops – the +23.7 is this years, which means nothing. Point still stands though.

defense at first base is a joke
the difference between a great defender and a decent one is barely noticeable.
we let a near gold glover go to get a better bat at first base ourselves. the player we put there never played the position before. .996 was the lowest field percentage with Toronto for Overbay.
putting Mauer at first will pay dividends down the line for the Twins. it frees up the DH spot for a potential potent hitter. If a trade for Morneau somes up, I’d be all over that if im the twins.

Especially...
For a team with playoff aspirations. They probably wouldn’t want to endure the growing pains of errors (here and there) costing them games.

Its 100% his knees
While he can still stand it makes sense to move him, as if he could play an actual position now rather than become a DH later in his career when his knees blow out, it opens up an extremely valuable DH spot.
I think its a great move, both classy and strategical. With his arm, why not 3rd? For this season I agree to put him on DH because learning on the fly is no fun for the fans.
